8 NEWS FROM THE BAHAMAS, Arrival of the Karnak—Captu re of a Slaver with Nearly Four Hundred ‘The steamship Karnak, Capt. Brow’ jess, from Nassac, N. P., Joly 98, arrived at this port y eeterday morning. We are indebted to the kindness of Mr. George Allen, ‘be obliging purser of the Karnalz, for the following ac- ‘count of the captare of a slaver:— On Saturday morning, the 28th of July, Nassau was all excitement ip consequence of the arrival of three echoon- ‘ore with about three hundred and sixty Africans on board, Sp a compdete state of nudity. Three of the crew of the layer Were on board one of the schooners, and from one who epoke English I learned that they had mistaken the Barwak for « man-of-war steamer, not knowing that any weeamer plied between Nageau and New York. We saw the Blaver on the morning of Wednesday, July 25, at 6 A. M. ‘They ran in shore at aco, bat in Consequence of & gale the previous day they had /oet most of their canvass, and hed oot sufficiest left to bear out again from the land, and Sally struck at Lanyard Cay, on the northeast coast @f Abaco. On the arrival of the Karnak at Nassau no- thee was given that a schooner was on shere there, when veveral of the wreckers putoff to the spot and found Soother schooner, loaded with ice and railroad iron, on bore there as wei!) bat | could not leara her name, as mene of the wreckcrs whe had gone to her had returned. ‘The siaver left the coast with four hundred slaves on board, and bad lost about forty. They are all quite young, many of them children; about fifty are females. They were suflering much from scurvy and bunger. The cap: ‘tein and mate are not yet found. They say the former eut big throat the firet day out, and mate sbortly efter was drowned. t, however, remains to be proved. They had been out thirty-six days. OUR NASSAU CORRESPONDENCE. Nassav, N. P. July 28, 1860, Dangerous Coast—Wrecks—The Captured Slaver and Her Preight—The Suspicious Shed at Cotlon Cay—. Motd— Weer, &. Me time is fast approaching when this green and Sumy isie will be as full as an egg of American citi wens, recruiting, not for Uncle Sam’s army or Davy, but abeir own precious health, At@present it is full of raw, full blooded Africans, fresh from Congo river. And 60 it eomes to pass: a not very large echooner, supposed © be American, struck on the back of Lanyard or Little Harbor Bay, Abaco, on Wednesday night last, and went to pieces. Thig is one of the moet dangerous places in the Babamas, and inevitable destruction threatens all who gre dached against the high and sharp coral rocks. Thi morning three wreckers came in full of live stock, ‘end are vow in the harbor awaiting the action of the au- thorivies. Ihave gathered this much: that a who epeaks English, and who ig stated to bean Ameri- can, was printed out by three of the crew as the captain; tbat be and another man refused to come to Nassau, the quasi-captain declaring that all he wanted was a piece of Jand six feet long, four feet wide and two deep. The people from Cherokee Sound found the wreck and saved 360 Afri- eans, who, as just reported, are here. Some were drowned, wome died from lassitade, and some of the crew were also drowned. Of these latter who were saved all ee to be Spaniards or Portuguese, two of whom speak gai among the blacks appears an intelligent fel- yw, dressed, who speaks Spanish, and is evidently a decoy duck, used by the traders. ‘The appearance of the Africans is anything but pleasing; py ro to have scurvy and opthalmia, and seem to be baif starved; yet, notwithstanding, they have an idea of their altered position ; their countrymen, who have been Bere from childhood (as captured slaves) avd who still retain a knowledge of their vernacular, couverse with ‘hem, and then they sing not unharmoulously and clap weir hands and shout. Men, boys and girls (there are ‘so women) are al! perfectly naked. This is the first wreck of the kind. The Creole, you know, was brought into port by force, and bad American elaves, going from one State to avother, The Bahama awry) landed them, and they were declaré’t free; t after a lengthy diplomatic correspondence, and the ajs- powiment of & Commissivn to investigate the claim for eompensation made by the owners of the glaves, the British government paid for them. No claim will, lap prebend, be put in iv this case. 1 regret no name Was on the vessel's stern About a month ago a report came up bere that a lar ehed was erected at Cotton Cay, one of the Anguilla Blands, situated on the Sult Cay bank, aud that a num: der of negroes were also landed ther9; that a large brig ‘was alzo in the offing. The report given by some of the crew as wel! as the slaves went to show that they feared the Karnak to be a British cruizer, and they rep her on shore in the bope of escaping punishment. On Thursday, July 26, the Cunard royal mail steamship Rarpak, Captain A. Brownlees, while prosecuting her voyage from New York to Nassan, New Providence, at etx o'clock A. M., being then within four miles of the eivow of Abaco, and steering a south southwest course for tbe Hole in the Wall lighthouse, observed @ sail abend eteering same way. No partiou'ar attention was paid to this vessel until, as we gained upon her, she was ebecrved about an hour afterwards to alter ber course to the west, or towards the shore, and soon after to strike. On our arrival at Nassau, we reported having seen « wreck on Lanyard’s Cay, aad three wrecking schooners, tho Expeditious, Spy and Alert, were immediately de- spatched to her relief. As the wind was fair they were but a short time in reaching the place, and on*boarding the vessel found her to be deserted. An examination of the bold produced nothing more than some joose lumber end a number of empty water casks, but a glance on shore discovered some three or four bundred negroes, ea. One end of tbe main boom had been run out from the ship and made fust to a rock, and by sliding down this the whole cargo of slavee, wiih the crew, were enabled to reach the land in safety.’ No lives were lost in the landing, though five negroes subsequently died on shore. The vessel was a fore and aft schooner, with fly top-eail, American build, Dlack, ber name seratched out, but an American edt on ber stero of the Expetitious asked the captata of the co consisted, Where he was from and where bound! The time at which they say they saw the supposed man-of-war and the posit.on corresponds exactly with the Karnak’s log as to having sighted them; besides, we are the only steamer running on this coast, Tho Expeditious, Spy and Alert arrived at Naseau, with their cargoes of living souls, on Saturday morning last. The news spread through the place like lightning, and the wharves and quays literally swarmed with epecta- tors. The three vessels anchored off Adderly’s wharf, and were certainly a sight to bebold, and once seen Bever to be forgotten, Oa the decks of these thrae email craft were huddled together three hundred and sixty human beings—men, women and children—all naked as the day they were born. Cheer after cheer were sent up by those’ on shore, and responded to with a hearty good will by the rescued Africans. On shore the excitement was intense, especially among the colored population, Here you met @ man running ata break neck pace, with three or four quartera loaves tucked un- der his arm. There you saw another with several pounds of leaf tobacco, (of which Africans seein very fond, young and old either chew or smoke it), and scrambling into a boat; a third with a box of clay pipes, while from the corner might be seen another conveying a huge de- miohn, which I have a strong suspicion contained some. thing stronger than water. an exciting time among pom snarl T think I never saw. I visited the Spy ‘and Expeditious. Each vessel had, I suppose, about 120 or 180 of the negroes on board. Considering their long voyage of thirty-six days, cooped up in the pestiferous hold of a slaver, they seemed to enjoy remarkable good health, with the exception that all were more or less suf- fering trom the African itch. The number on each ves- sel was eo great that it was almost impossible to a foothold, but by perseverance I at last 6 1 inquired > a Congo interpreter as to how they felt, en they all broke out into a kind of song or chaunt, accompanied by a con tinuous clapp g of hands. ihe burthen of the song or chaunt, the interpreter informed me, was ‘Ob, we are 89 happy. ” They were nearly all occupied in chewing or sm the tobacco with which they had been supplied, and seemed perfectly contented with the world in gene- ral and themselves and their position io particular. The residents of Nassau came Leong to the assiet- ance of the unfortunates. Before the Karnak eailed I noticed boat loads of provisions, bedding, clothing, &c., Jeaying the wharves for their use and comfort. The re, with allon board, were sent during the after ‘to Atho! The rest will most probably be dis- tributed throughout the island, and become permanet settlers. Whether or no the original captain of the slayer did cut his throat remains to be proved. 1 believe it is a well known fact that there is always considerable difficulty in ascertaining who t@ the captain of a slave ship Nous verrons. The July in- terest on State, city and county bonds had been promptly met, and State and city bounds were in good request, with none offer ing. From England we hear that the fands were lower, chiefly from sympathy with the Paris rentes, which had been unfavorably affected by a rumor that the goverment was about to borrow $25,000,000 for military works. The demand for money con tinued active; the rate was 4 per cent. The Bank of England had lost £324,973 during the week. Cot ton was quiet, without much change. There can be no permanent appre- ciation in the value of money at New York antil there is a more active consumptive demand for it than exists at present. Prior to 1857 the ap- sorption of money by railroads alone—to say nothing of steamship building, mines, | other material enterprises, and a trade which, in the interior of the country, was much more active than it is at present—sufficed to keep it steadily above the legal rate of interest. The fact appears to be that what the bulls regarded as a mere upward finctuation in the mar- ket was in reality a revolution, and such a revolu- tion as we only see once in a great many years. Jt was the outward expression of an inward change from bankruptcy to prosperity, from utter distrust to general contideace. None of the Wall street operators appear to have distinguished the fact. Hence of the money made in Wall street within the past three weeks, very little has gone into the pockets of the regular opera- tors. Jt has gone to outside men, who are recovering courage daily, and beginning to operate in stocks regularly, as they used to do be- fore the crisis. Toledo was freely supplied this morning and declined in conseqence; it sold down to 38}, closing 35f bid, against 39; yesterday. Ga- Jena declined 3 per cent; Reading, 2; Linois Cen- tral, 2j; Evie, §; Pacific Mail, 1 per cent; Missouris }. Onthe other hand, Rock Island advanced }; Michigan Southern guaranteed rose in the morning 1j per cent, but lost 1 per cent of the advance at the close of the day; Harlem advanced }; while New York Central, Hudson River and Michigan Central were steady. The demand for State stocks continues light, though there was more inquiry for Tennessees this morning. Railway bonds are wanted; we note a further advance in the issues of the Michigan Southern and the La Crosse Land Grants. At the close to-day the market was weak; the followiag were the last quotations:—Virginia 6's, 90] a 91; Missouri 6’s, 81] a }; Canton, 19 a 20j; Cumber- land Coal preferred, 14a 15; Pacific Mail, 83 a 84; New York Central, 84} a4; Erie, 23) a 4; Hudson River, 574 a J; Harlem, 16} @ 3; Harlem preferred, 454.4; Reading, 45} a 46; Michigan Central, 61 a 4; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 18] a 19; do. guaranteed, 45} a 4; Panama, 123 a 4; Il- linois Central, 743 a 754; Galena and Chicago, 73 a 4; Cleveland and Toledo, 38) a j; Chicago and Rock Island, 794 a j.
