ern re Departure of the Great Eastern for the south—Small Number of Passengers— Eathasiasm at a Low Ebb—Scenes at the Dock and On the River—Dodworth’s Band—Ner Return to New York and Departure for Engiand, a; &¢- ‘The excitement and extbusiasm which the arrival of ‘the Big Ship in our harbor crested gradually spréad ‘over the length and breadth of the land. Thousands who would not otherwise bave left their coustry homes this gummer, were induced to do so for the purpose of inspeet- ring this great triumph of naval architecture, and as the ‘length of her stay increased, so did the number of ber visiters. When the people from the rural districts were pouring into our city by tens of thousands to see her, and ‘the directors were pocketing thousands of dollars dally, “they wore not satisfied to ‘‘let well alone,” but announc ‘ed their intention to take a limited number of passen- gers, at ten dollars a bead, to Cape May. The trip vwas looked upon by our citizens a8 a pleasure excursion, and two thousand of them accordingly invested their money in the purchase of tickets, ‘anticipating a good time generally, but, through the mismanagement and neglect of the steward (Mr. Cox,) they were, as our readers have been informed through the columns of the Hxxanp, most wofully de- ceived, and all of them taken in and done for ina way they little expected. The directors announced their in- tention to give another marine picnic yesterday, going a3 far eouth as Old Point Comfort and Annapolis. The tickets for the trip out were sold for six and eight dollars ach, and on making inquiries at a late hour yesterday afternoon at the offlees of Adams’ Express Company and ‘Grinnell, Minturn & Co., we learned that only about one had been sold—a ee oe noe the two thousand sold for the first trip. We eae Sp eee to the dock, at the foot of Hammond street, off which ‘the Great Eastern was lying, with her head up stream. ‘We found about half a dozen of the ers wait! ‘the arrival of the steamtug which wag to ¢ them ‘to the vessel. They were standing or sitting on the shady side of a lumber pile, keoping watch over their carpet bage and trunks. it few people ‘were about, except laborera engaged in unioad- coal, lumber and bricks. The refreshment sa- loons, lately so crowded, were now all deserted—bai keepers were ending idle, aud all the weighing ma. chines, ice cream and lemonade stands, had disap; 4 ‘and in their place we found piles of lumber aud bricks. The oul livety place there we found was the boat fitted Up a8 @ travelling or floating met ie Old Adams, Barnum & Oo., in which they luted eabsbitio, , bears, fat babies, &c., kc. “As the hour for departure approached the number of passengers increased. A few hackney and hotel coaches arrived, deposited their pas: sepgers and drove away. About half past four Calook the steamtug Magnolia came alongside the dock and took the passengers on boar’. A cart came down with seve- ral water coolers, which were also pat on board, and rea the directions on the trunks we found out that the Majority of the paseengers were Southerners, who were availing themselves of this opportunity to reach home. A squad of policemen from the Ninth ward were ou duty, but their services were not required, as the umber of people present, including ngers, was pot over two hundred. About five o’clock the tag moved off from the dock, word being left that any others who came and wished to go on board must hire a small boat. From that time to ¥ix o'clock the number of peo- ple increased to about two hundred, who seated them- selves on the umber piles and then waited paticatly for the Big Ship to move off The members of Dodworth’s band, who were to accompany the ex:ursionists, came ie to the dock about thirty minutes after the tug had and after wasting a deal of time bargaining with the foalmen, finally struck a bargain to be rowed out to the steamer at twenty-five cents a bead. They stowed themselves on ard two small, ricketty row boats, in company with the big and little drum, i & avizaly horns, fifes, flutes, les and a " who shoved off with’ them just as the paddles and icrew of the Great Eastern began to move. ‘A stern chase” is long one, and the last we saw of them their way down the river succeeded to move; she foremost until about ite the foot of Spring street, when she wae and then with both screw and paddles propelling her she moved down the river, which was at the time crowded with night steamers, sloops aud other sailing ‘vessels taking advantage of the wind to work their way up the river. Several guns were fired by the Great Eastern on passing the Jersey City doc! a Rattery. The whole scene was lively beautiful io the e: treme, though the great enthusiasm which character zed her departure on Monday last was wanting. Th number of people on the diflerent picrs was very gmali and these pot st all enthusiastic in . On the Battery the crowd was small, compared with the vast multitude which assembled to view her departure on Monday lust. ‘The Great Eastern is expected to return to this port on ‘the 12th inst., and vill leave for England, via Halifax, on the 16th. About ten berths bave been’engaged for the (passage to Halifax, and only about twenty for the passage to England, so, unless she fills up very rapidly indeed, those who may go in her will not be inconveniently crowded. THE GREAT EASTERN EXCURSION TO CAPE MAY. We publish the subjoined note from the directors of the Great Eastern Ship Company, respecting the complaints ‘of the excursionists to Cape May. As it was the last day of their stay in our city, advantage was taken at the last moment of an opportu nity to visit the renowned public institutions of our mu- nicipality. At nine o'clock ig the morning a detachment of the BSixty-ninth regiment, consisting of gineer Corps (the first time they appeared in connection with the Emmet Guard), mustered at the Fagie: Drill rovided, under the management of Mr. Matbews, of Weatchester House. Te Shortly — eleven o'clock the lines were let # ry, passed and the & hours, during which the visiting company bud an oppor- tunity of behoiding the beautiful seer yon the Long Is- land shore adjacent to New York, landed at Randall's Is- land, where they were received by the Warden, Mr. Wm. H, Stevens, and the Randali’s Island boys, to the number of about 300, under the charge of Mr. Ripley, The boys were drawn up in line and presented arms as the military filed by, after which they went through a numiber of evo- lutions, winning the applause of the visitors. Master Alexander, one of the boys, in a brief speech, weloomed the Fmmet Guard, to which Captain Chil! responded in ‘QD appropriate manner. From i's Island they proceeded to Blackwell's Island, where they inspected the workhouse, almshouse and penitentiary, and expressed themselves highly grati- fled at the cleanly manner in which they were kept. They were received by Messrs. Fitch, Anderson and Keene, the wardens of the various jostituttons there located; and after jiug about an hour in visiting the lower portion of the island, re-embarked on the May Queen and proceeded te the foot of Broome street, where they landed. Form'ng into line upoa the dock, the Em. met Guard, with two companies of tho Sixty-mintlt regi- ment in front, and a like number in the rear, were es- corted through Grand street to the Bowery, and theuce to their quarters at the Westchester, where dinner was in waiting. Previous to sitting down to the meal an informal meeting of the eficers was held in the parlors of the hotel, at which speeches were made by Lieutenant Captain McMabon and Colonel Doheny.
