The People to Defend Their Qum Fromtier— Aid Kefused—Statement of Their rvevances—Gov. Hous ton’s Appeals Disregarded—Col. Johnson's Expedition— Indians Have Crossed the Rio Grande—Trouble Ahead-— Sam Houston's Last Appeal, dc. The unwelcome news that Congress has refused aid to the bleeaing frontier of Texas has reached us. The hope that men of like race and tongue with ours would listen tw the voice of humanity and avert the dauger which hangs over our froutier people bas proved futile. We are to be left to our own defence; we are to be cast off by the nation which but fourteem years since received us into its folds, with @ pledge of provection; and now, when the prooft of our own fidelity are abundant, we are to con- tinue faithful to the Union which proves faithless to us. Why this treatment of Texas? Have not the proofs been presented that the regular troops vow in our midst are ineficiept? Hag not the record been furnished of men, women and children murdered, females ravished or carried into captivity, and a whole frontier devastated? Has not it been made known that Texas has been compelled to put in the field over a thousand men to repel the gavage foe? Has not Goveruor Houston sent up ‘Sppeal after appeal for aid? All this has been done. And, alas, Our own countrymen have passed it by unheeded. The cursed spirit of sectionalism has bid the savage pur- sue his hellish calling. The cry for help was borue upon Southern breeze, What though the wail of the son ot the Western prairie was mingled with that of bim of the Southern forest? What though the daughters of Mlinois aud Indiana mingled their ead ery with that of the bereft Southern matron or daughter? It fell upon unpitying hearts. There was humanity, pity, love for the negro, none for the white race. How long shall these things continue? Texas has already expended in the last year half @ million of dollars in ‘a0. fending its frontier. “tts expenses now co ‘Ubat soore are at least $50,000 per month. While the goverument troops are fattening in their forts, our Rangers are in the field driving out the savage. Must we abandon ont frontier people to their fate and give the land over to the Indian, or shall we keep up our present system of de- fence and entail upon our people threefold taxation? Deserted by the general goverfment, we must choose be- tween these evils, and a8 humanity bids us, and duty de mands, we niurt lake the latter, We cannot withdraw our troops from the frontier, for the moment we do so the settlements will recede. A’ focting of insecurity exists, even with the effective made of defence adopted by Gen, Honston. Cost what it may, the frontier must be defended. The expedition commanded by Col. M. Johnson has started ona trai! for the Witchita Moa Large bands of Kioways and Cheyenes have been inte! tnd it is snppoeed they will concentrate and give him. battle. Nothing but the heavy force thrown on the fron- tier has prevented their attacking the settlements in the Jast month. Besides, parties of Indians have crossed the Rio Grande, and are stil! doing great mischier in the country Detween b here and that river. The force now in the field is not sufticient to check them, nor will it be done until General Houston, at the head of a few thou- sand men, marches into Mexico and annihilates their en- tire force.’ Nor will this be all. Mexico cannot restrain them, The United Stats will ndt keep a force in the feld to do it effectually. Texas is not able to do it; and if General Houstdn faile in his last effort, which be will now make, to obtain protection from the United States, he must not only mareh an or hs there, but bold the country as “‘kecurity for the future.” He has done ail that man can do to avert this necessity. He has prayed Con, for help; he hag used argument and entreaty, an‘ and tas failed to either convinoe the reason or soften the heart. it will now be his duty (and he is urged on all sides to do #0) to go to Washington and lay before the President in person the grievance of Texas. Should he then neither obtain remaveration for the lorses we have suffered nor the money we have expended, and Con; rovide no means for our future defence, Texas will know ow to act. The sectional politicians who have outraged Northern feeling by refusing us aid will then Gnd that they bave mistaken the masses of the North. The North stood by Texas in her former time of trouble. Politicians then attempted to stem the popular tide. They will stand L ‘Texas now, evea though sectionalists proclaim against as once went up the cry of help from Macedonia, it still goes from Texas. v RALvESTON, July 5, 1800. ‘Strong Feeling in Favor of Sam Houstom—Traits of His Character—Anecdote of Him—Sam Houston as a Stump Speaker, dc., de. Having spent a number of weeks in travelling about over Texas, observing the country and conversing with all classes of its inhabitants, I have found some things in political and social aspect so peculiar that Ihave no doubt they will be interesting to large numbers of your ers The first surprise which I experieuced on coming into the State from New York was in fading how completely the minds of men here are filled with Sam Houston. He seems to pervade the atmosphere.
