Shortly before ten o'clock lust night an interesting sight took place over the upper part of the city. It was sup. posed to be a meteor. It was first seer in the form of a blue star, surrounded by a thick mist. It seemed to ccme from Jersey, and proceeded gradnally for some seve- ral hundFed feet, end then, when abont over Forty sov- eth street and’ Broadway, ts suddenly changed ita up- by throwing out a red flery looking substance, burping tail of at least two hundred fest in length The moment the red fire exhibited itself it took 4 horizontal course and in verennend in speed and apparently ished itsel( at about the Third averue and Forty seventh strest, Thit curious phenomenna mat have been WitOr Ke! by ChenPands, a8 & largs number of people were in the wterte at the time, attracted by the fire in the kerowene factory in Forty seventh street, which was burning at the time. A gertieman coming from Brooklyn between the hourr of nine and ten last evening, gave a8 6 description of an atmospherical phenomenon visible at that time, which oxcited the interest and curiosity of the witnesses to it Abont quarter before ten two balla of fire, apparently the eize of @ man’s hat and baving each one a tail or ktream of fire following it, passed from the southwest to the north east, at» distance of not over a mile above the earth, Thee tails, geen from the earth, appeared to be about eight or ten feet in tength. The bodies followed each ether immediate sneceesion, the head of the second »e it were, te tbe tail of the first. The was Fo moderate as Lo precl de the possibility meteors, it being, in the language of our little taster than the usual speed of 9 horse What wind there was stirring at the time was it aD epposit ction from that takeu by the two bodies, so that they could not have been fire balloons, us was suggceted by eeme — They excited considerate inter. est ameng the Brook!\nites and the passeagere on the nd all #-emed to agree that they bad never keen of the k nd before, and chat to them it was in explicable Doubtless some of our scientific meu will svon give us an explanation of it. TO THE EDITOR OF THK HERALD. No. 281 Henson Sreeer, Jniy 20, 1860, A most brilliant meteor waa visible this eat a ® quarter to ten o'clock. My position to observe it was 6 most favorable one, Enjoying the coo! breezes from the Hudeon on the reef of a bigh house, 1 was startle! by ‘what Tat Grat supposed was a skyrocket. My next inv pression war that it was the comet, sud it was not anti! it bad fairly started that (was convinced that it was a meteor of great splendor Tt made ite appearance jnet over Jersey City, aud taking a course due weat, went out or ferl on the weat side of the city. A brilliant train fol lowee in ite wake, and added greatly tu its dor, ft onderwent a oumber of changes when it Arst started, ald me to believe frst that it war a rocket, aud subkequent’y a comet. Ita aplendor was enhanced by the brilllaney ef he coloring it wssumed, whieh is perfectly indeserthbable, About a minute was occupied in the par age. BELG District Attorney's Office.
