As the day appointed for the settlement of the great international prize ring contest between the champions of England and America draws near, the public interest appears to become more intense. 3 ts the principal topic ef conversation inevery place of public resort and in every company, and the Iatest intelligence from Eagland respecting it is eagerly oeked for. In this city Heenan fa regarded as the national representative, and his success is confidently predicated by men who are conscientiously opposed to pugilism in general, but ‘whose scrapes are, in this particular case, completely overcome by their feelings of nationality, Indeed & ig well koown that large sums ef money have been sent ever to the Benicia Boy by several prominent Wall street werchants, for the purpose of backing himself with Sayers on the day of the fight, and thus indirectly afford- ing an additional stimulus to his exertions for victory oa that occasion. ‘The Benicia Boy and histrainers have been compelled to make another change in his training quarters. Obliged by the fanaticism of e small number of puritanical citi- zens of Salisbury to leave their convenient tralning quar- ters near that city, they next took up their residence at Winchester, in Hampshire, but this locality not being suitable, either for training purposes or for safety, or perhaps both, they speedily evacuated that part of the country, and we now find them quietly settled down to the prosecution of their one great object—the proper pre- paration of the American champion—at a little village named Box, about five miles from Bath, in the county of Somerset. At this place, according to the graphic de- soription of the editor of Wilkes’ Spirit, he has been fur- tupate enough to secure a enug and commodious farm house, tenanted only ss an old couple, bahia re. sided in it for years, and who, near the house, Paap ah arene ith Cusick and Jack whenever he feels like having a little rousing Pog od exercise. ‘There was some difficulty, however, in down even hero, for fred Gaffer jones, though not at all verse on principle to manly art of fisticufis between two stout fellows whe ed ee alee tr aeadegetlnn of and objected for z ing oe ogy every advance which the ‘dsodonald in" price, mado until the eee woman, catehing sight Benecia Boy, wi with arms folded, and lent, stoo? gracefully bebind, took = sudan ancy oh d settled the question at once ue Kind, old man aside, and telling Jack that he an |, the Benicia Boy, might should not want shelter while s a roof to cover them. ‘The situation of the Boy is much more eligible in many respects than the former residence at Salisbury. Fino plains and sloping fleids, and an exceedingly useful ne af of bilis, are well in sight tee the litile stone Gere which, in case of the viotory of our champion, will become as memorable as Hugomont at Waterloo, or the inn at Villa- franca bal eb med Imperial breakfasters recently settled the destinies of Italy. There Heenan and Cusick and Macdonald prepare for the ms. conspicuous event in the history of the prize ring of either Engiand or America, while Falkland, passing his time over books and pleasant leisure, awaits the day which he has con- sented to intereet himeelt ro much about with philogoph- ic confidence. At the point of time at which I now write Heenan is marvellously well advanced, and could be made ready for his battle in a week, were it necessary to rary | hinmpfor that purpose; but there is no such need, je is just where be should be four weeks in advance of the ans ot fa the object of & unig is to produce & man at bighighest pi t of 78 fection at a given day and hour; and the art of: the trainer is exhibited in conducting his man to his ¢limax imax by regular degrees. Like @ horse, he can “‘blocm” but once during a preparation, and it is all-important that he do not bloom a day too goon or a day too late. He can hold perfection but a little while, and when the climax is reached we at once may see the beginning of the decline. As an illus- tration how nice a thing endition is, and how keenly ft is etudied and understood by the pugilists of London, the trainer of Mace, who recently pitted him against ‘Travers, the Black, bound his man, who was over size, to se at a certain reduced weight. According to the rules, the man went to the scale the day before, but a8 soon as ‘Mace had been shown to be within the mark required, he ‘was “‘let up’’ for the next twenty-four hours from his ab- atemious diet, supplied with generous food, and his re- resent ha ce expanded to Lente into three or four more is of weight. The trainer is, therefore, not diplomaties and general of the fight, bat Wd la ee 4 ain iad to Gooey th oe Ma the personal assurances of Mac- good will, and implicitly obeys every in- struction given to him. To use Jack’s own words, he “could not desire to have @ more willing and mindful man,” aad if he does not win it will not De for waat of proper effort to get himself in due condition. The same writer thus describes the mode of ee practised by the Benecia Boy. He says:—His mode preparation has been altered a iittle ‘within the nat t last ae days, and it is now as follows: he rises about six o’clock in the morning, being wakened by his faithful attendant, Cusick, and after ‘a good wash of the face, head and body in cold water, ne goes forth. He employs the hour ands half between that and breakfast time in a brisk waik, and with a run in of a few hundred yards at the top of his speed. He takes breakfast precisely at eight o'clock, that meal being a la fourchetie, beef or mution nicely broiled, without fat, and bread being the features ofthe meal. The bi fast being over, he, after a lapse of half an hour, takes a bath of cold water, with plenty of rock salt in it, is well and briskly rubbed down from head to foot, and then discharges the ‘clothes which had become satu by his morning ran, and pute on fresh linen. He them starts out at nine o’clock, in heavy clothing, with a pair of light dumb-belles in "his hands, and takes a walk of eight or ten miles, vary: ing the direciion according to the wind, 80 as to have it behind him coming home. When within a mile of hone he bursts forth into a strong run, coming in at full speed and unt cell pian perspiration. He is at once seized by hie careful attendants, as grooms seize a racer when be comes in lathering from & “breeze,” and ig stripped of his clothing instanter, and then the; ct upoa bim with strong tonels and rab. him , violent iy tilt his whole skin is in ® ruddy glow. Fresh linen and clothing is then put Rs grape ‘and he sits down or walks gently about inside of the house and out of the air for a jew minutes. He then 's to the barn, close by the house, and exercises with the outa; dumb bella and bag, until Re is well fatigned at each, and then loiters about until the dinner hour, whioh comes at one o’clock, and whieh varies between beef one oc ote jee he oa a) with no vegetable, and the chi ned ly ei s ao of t sooiak ale. Spirituous Nquors are, of courte, never touched, be tea, coffee, and all folds, ey even water, are caretully” eschewed. He remains quietly about after dinner till about two or half: two 0% , when he goes out for another long wi ta eight or ten miles, oa always with a companion, in order to keep him in cheerful conversation, and the route is usually varied, 80 48 to afford employment to his mind and cheerfulness to his imagination, for everything like monotony must be carefully avoided. In this pont of view that trainer or co} is moat desirable who has a fund of anecdote ‘and lively conversation, 80 a8 to keep him continually in a buoyant humor. He goes along in ‘this afternoon walk at the pace that is most ible to him, and he usually returns by five or half-paet five o’clock. He has tea and bread at six o'clock precisely, and towards seven o'clock he takes another slow walk, and returns at eight o’ciock. At half-past eight he is furnished with a large bow! of oat- meal gruel, which serves him for his su , and at nine he goes to bed. Tvrspay, April 10—6 P. M. The following is a comparative statement of the exports (exclusive of specie) from New York to foreign’ ports, for the week and since Jan. 1:— 1858. 1859, For the week.,..... $1,269,846 1,358,089 Previously reported 15,099,099 14, 15,960,906 20,846,504 Since Jan. 1......816,868,045 16,304,065 22,437,286 The exports of domestic preduce continue to keep up. The principal items in the above are cotton to Europe, provisions to Great Britain, flour to the British colonies and the West Indies, and some hides, tea and sugar toEurope. There has been no clearance for China duting the week, or the aggre- gate would have been heavier. We note to-day a revival in the inquiry for breadstaffs for shipment; this will help to swell the aggregate of next week’s exports. The steamship North Star arrived this morning with $1,146,211 in speoie on freight ; some of the bars will probably go out in the Cunard steamship to-morrow. Our money market is without change. The bank statement of yesterday is freely canvassed, and con- demned on all sides. No one attempts to vindicate the enormous expansion in progress, and every person of experience forsees and deplores the mis- chievous results which it is likely to produce, when appealed to money in hand, and would have considered them- selves acting unwisely had they allowed it to lie idle. It is precisely in order to prevent errors of this kind that the weekly bank statements are pub- lished. It isin order that the several banks may know what their neighbors ‘are doing, and that they may not all be expanding simultaneously, in ignorance of their aggregate condition, that the law obliges the cashiers to make weekly state- ments on oath, and the newspapers publish the re- sult of these statements without charge. However it may be for the Presi- dent of the Bank of America or the Bank of Commerce to increase his loans, from the simple point of view of his own bank’s condition, it is Several bank managers, personally, state that they had the wise and safe clearly unwise and unsafe for him to do so when he knows that all the other banks are expanding, that the specie basis is inadequate, and that a rise of 14 per cent in foreignexchange, and a conse- quent shipment of s couple of millionss ween, would create a general panic. We ought, by the way, in justice, to have excepted from the censure laid upon all the banks yesterday, the Chemical Bank (which is always wisely and prudently ad- ministered), the City and the Phoenix—which three iustitutions reduced their loans last week—also the Park Bank, whieh increased its specie 8s much as ita loans, and is now the second bank in the city in specie strength. Foreign exchange is inactive, but steady. The market is supplied with bankers’ sterling bills at 1083 a {, and with francs at 5.16} a 17%; there are besides some good produce and cotton bills in the market at 108} a 4 fer sterling, and 5.183 for bills on Paris. The brokers see no indication of an ad- vance in the market; but it is hardly possible that this month can pass without higher rates ruling, especially as the imports of foreign goods are in- creasing steadily. The following are the last quotations of sight ex- change on New York at the cities mentioned, the quotations being in all cases for gold:— Chicago ‘The stock market opened doll and weak to-day, but gained strength as it progressed, and closed quite steady. New York Central was pressed for sale at one time at 77},"bu® rallied afterward, and closed at 78 bid, against 774 yesterday. The news rom Albany to-day encoutages the belief that the Senate will not agree to cither of the tolling bills passed by the Honse, and will hardly admit the amendments t» the Pro Rata bill forced on the House by Mr. Flagler and the Clinton League. Galena was depressed, on & report of a decline of $3,000 in the earings for the first week of April, and sold down to 614, bot afterward pellied and closed at 612 bid, against 62; ‘bid at the close yesterday.
