FINANCIAL AND’ COMMERCIAL. Monpay, March 26—6 P. M. The bank statement of to-day compares as fol- lows with that of last week:— Week ending _Loans. Specie. Circulation. Deposits. March 17....$127,562,848 23,171,888 8,380,009 82,908,128 March 24..:; 127,618,507 23,286,204 8,385,266 82,107,419 Increase 60,639 114,806 = = Decrease .. = — 45,733 890,700 This statement is, in regard to specie and loans, more favorable than was antieipated; the increase in the latter being amaller than was expected, while a decrease in the specie was confidently expected. The decrease in deposits is due to the calling in of country balances by country banks which are pre- paring for the opening of navigation. Next week the deposits will probably ahow a further re- duction, but the specie should show a considerable increase. Money is without change. Some of the large banks are very free lenders on call, and the indica- tions are that the brokers may presently be sup- plied at 424}. We hear, however, of no transac- tions thas far below 5. The rates for paper con- tinue, as before, to be 5 9 6 for first class, accord- ing to length. The Sub-Treasury paid out a good deal of money to-day—partly on California drafts ; the total disbursements were $375,607; the receipts, $196,340 ; of which $174,000 for duties; balance this evening, $7,943,405. The market for foreign exchange opens without much activity, and without change of rates. The current rates for city bankers’ bills are 108} a | for 60 day sterling bills, and 1093 a § for short sight ; for francs, 5.16, a 5.17} for 60 days, and 5.133 for short sight. Southern bills go at 1083 a 4, and at 5.18% s 5.20 for francs. The demand is very light for the season—owing, as we have before explained, to the large quantity of cotton and produce bills pressing on the market. The following are the last quotations of sight ex- change on New York at the cities mentioned, the quotations being in all cases for gold :— par. The business of the Stock Exchange continues to increase, and prices advance from day to day. The Most active speculative stock of the day is Michigan Southern guaranteed, which advanced to- day from 23 to 24}, and closed 24 bid. The com- mon stock was in demand at 11. This advance is due partly to the large jncrense in the earnings of the road—$10,000 for third week of March—and partly to the interest excited by the approaching contest at the annual election. The opinion of the leading brokers was loudly expressed to-day in ap- proval of the views set forth in this morning's Hyuatp. At the same time, a desire‘is expressed in many quarters to know the names of all ora majority ot the new men who are proposed as directors, However great the confidence reposed in the gentleman who is at the head of the movement, the parties in interest appear to be em titled to know something mors of the proposed board than the mere fac: tht he will be at its head Reek Island and Toledo were buoyant atan ad- vance. The directors of the former company met to-day, but, no quorum being present, adjourned til! to-morrow, when s dividend will be declared. It te expected that the dividend will be three per cent. We think the stockholders are entitled te four, as the road has earned the money, and the earnings this spring and summer are sure to be largely in excess of last. Central was fairly active at am advance of a fraction. Among the bonds, the various issues of the Southern Michigan were in request at an advance. The closing prices of the day were as follows:—Virginia 6's, 93 84; Missourié’s, 80} 8 81; Canton, 20}8 }; Cumber- land Coal preferred, 13 a 14; Pacific Mail, 99a 3; New York Central, 75 a}; Hrie,10a4; Hadson River, 38} a 3; Harlem, 9} a 3; Harlem preferred, 34 a j; Reading, 41} a 3; Michigan Central, 41j0 42; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, ll¢a 4; do. guaranteed, 24.8 3; Panama, 133} a 134; Illi- nois Central, 60 s {; Galena and Chicago, 6140 4; Cleveland and Toledo, 223 03; Chicago and Rock Island, 653 a4. The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $28,362,032 11, and the balances $1,217,520 69.
