2 F INANCIAL AND “COMMERC! AL. Tuvaspay, Mar oh 8-6 P.M. We have no change in money to report, Some ofthe banks have been offering money ia Wall strect to-day at five per cent, and merchants who have i lances ever, aud leave them on temporary employment at the brokers’, are obliged to be satis fied with four. Still we hear of no paper going below our last quotations. Itis likely that rates will fall before very long, for the amount of paper making is moderate, and the competition among lenders is quite active. The Sud-Treasury movement has been quite moderate today; the disbursements foot up | $244,120; the receipts, $120,127--of which $115,000 from dnties; the balance this evening stands at $845,562. Treasury notes are selling at } premium, There is very little doing in foreign bila. The leading bankers asking 108} a 109, at which price the demand is moderate. Some of them look for a more active market to-morrow , but the supply of cotton bills continues undiminished, and very goed commercial bills, drawn in the city, are of- fered at 108} 3. Francs are a shade ficmer: 5.15 a 16} is still the authorized quotation. The following are the last quotations of sight ex- change on New York at the cities mentioned, the quotation being in all cases for gold; ~ Chicago. St Lous there was an iye busiaess on the change to-day, and prices continue to improve. Heavy purchases of Central are made through lead- ing commission houses, it is supposed for the ac- count of parties at Albany. The latest advices ap- pear to be favorable to the passage of a tolling | bill, under which cach road would be allowed to a fixed sum by way of comm on. The m now mentioned for the Central is $500,000, it is believed, however, that the Legislatare will | agree to be satisfied with half this amount; and if the road is allowed to charge 2} cents per mile for | way passengers—as stipulated in the bill aow be- fore the Le ie—it will be a gainer by the ar- | rargement. The way passenger business was h $1,700,000 last year. Assuming that it | yields $1,800,000 this year—a safe estimate—the addition of half a cent to the fare would yield $450,000. These considerations doubtless, weighing on the public mind, and inducing the purchases we note, The stock, which last evening was sold down to 71], opened to-day at 724, ad- vanced to 72] at the close of the first board; between the boards it was done at 72, and closed in the afternoon at that bid. Galena ad- | vanced § per cent this morning, closing at 58f bid, gainst 5S at the close yesterday. Michigan Cen” tral continues to be bid up by its Boston friends; the stock touched 40, closing at 39} bid, against 9 at the close yesterday. Canton was again eccen tric in its movements; it ran down to 19}, then up to 214, and finally closed at 194 bid. Pacific Mail appears to have lapsed into a quiet condition: the price has not varied much for Some days: there were sales this afternoon at 94. The demand for State stocks and fayorite bonds contiaues active. Missouris are wanted at $1], Tennessees at 90, and other State securities at the highest prices | lately current. The third mortgage bonds of are, the Hudson River rose to-86} this morn- ing: the seconds to 9; the firsts are scarce | at 103. This afternoon the market was quite active, aud stocks closed firm at the following qnotations:—Virgima S1ad; Missouri 6's, 814 aj; Canton, 19% a {; Pacific Mail, ¢ O41; New aj; Erie, Harlem, 9j $4; Hudson River, a 4; do. preferred, 334 a Michigan Central, 39} a 3; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 8 a 4: do. guaranteed, -173 a 18; Panama, + a 9; Ulineis Central, 59) a 60; Galena and Chicago, 585 a j: Cleveland and Toledo, 19} 220; Chicago and | Rook Island, 63; a [. The Germania Fire Insurance Company has de. § clared a semi-annual dividend of six per cent, pay- able on the 12th inst. This is the first dividend of this company, The main features of the dry goods market are thns noticed in the Independent of to-day:— Business is steadily on the increase; bat yet, with the Fale of ac ravie proportion of tbe imports, there is lose Or mpes: prices Importers are giving way a little tm anticipation of the approaching auction sales) Many second ordere have been received trom the South, and the city jobbers have been renewing their purchases to main- tain due assortments. Tne supply of goods is, however, | too immease to maintain any great firmness or steatiness nm prices. The auctions of French sitke Lave commenced, end the over importat'ou is being felt. Wooilens a'so are in the same predicament, and prees heavily on the market. British goode have been less [recly imported, but Coati- aental goods quite the reverse. Prinw are, however, dull aud heavy ata considerable dcchne in price. Fancy cassimores are leas active. The over import of toreign woolleas interferes greatly with the domestic goods market. Prices favor the consumer in every bravch of dry goods. The Western community are very backward in tueir purchasea.
