GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF A SLAVE SALE. Southerm Cities and Southerm People, &o., ae, ae. ALABAMA. OUR SPECIAL MONTGOMERY CORRESPONDENCE: Mowtcourny, Ala., Feb, 6, 1868. Progress of the Disunion Sentiment in Alabama— Futile Atempls to Calm the Agitation—Douglas’ Unpopularity Among the Masses—The Charleston Convention and Aspiranis to the Presidency—Important Measures Before the Legislature—Alabama Arming for the Struggle— 4 Non-Intercoure Law Proposed—Mournful State of Affeirs. ‘The “irrepressible conflict” doctrine, as expounded by Seward, Greeley & Co., and put into practical operation by Jobn Brown, bas created a feeling of intense indignation fo Alabama. No comcession fhat the North will be willing to make can avert the coming shock of disunion and civil war. It is true afew of the leading men in the (State, have been endeavoring to calm the agitation by holding out a brilliant victory over the abolition forces at the ballot box next November, but the people look upon ali such Union saving schemes with distrust and coldness, Bosides, these good Samaritaas are strongly suspected of baving a leaning towards Doug- las—of whose unpopularity here it is hardly necessary te epeak—and that weakness, perhaps, of ali others, is least inexcusable. The State rights, or secession party, as you would call it at the North, leion by Yancey, which is largely in the majority, will never consent to the nomina- tion of the Little Giant. The delegates to the Charleston Convention have been instructed to withdraw rather than submit to the dictation of Douglas’ friends; ahd in this Movement it ts calculated they will be sustained by at Jeast three fourths of the Southern States. Douglas may think that the Southern States will rally to the cry of Union and victory. and that the poople bere will be com- pelled to sustain him for expediency sake, but tn this he is much mistaken. The South will not support Mr. Doug- Jas or any other Northern man who would deprive her of her righis in the Territorios. The squatter sovereignty doctrine never can be acceptable to the people of the South, and it is especially distasteful in times like these, and sooner than have Douglis and his offensive principles thrust upon them, they will run a third candidate, and (hus insure hie defeat. In fact, they would sooner seo the black repubjican candidste elected than ‘Dougias, for then the long agony would be over, disumion would immediately take place, and the South could adopt the necessary measures to protect her honor, her rights, and welfare. They are willing to give thoir warm. aupport to Dickinson or any other Northern man who is seusd on the slavery question, but they cannot stomach Dotigias and his squatter sovereignty doctrine. The action of the Virginia Legisiature iu regard to tne Harper’s Ferry foray is the subject of general applause, and the able effort of Col. Memminger, the commissioner from South Carolina, is the theme of Universal praise. ‘Still the people here are opposed t» amy conference of the Southern States until after the nomination at Charleston, and however much they may sympathize with Virginia and South Carolina, there is a disposition to await the re- sult of the convention before any action shali be taken to- wards precipitating matters. If the black republicans can be beaten fairly and squarely at the November election, why I think the people of Alabama will rest satistied, for & while at least. It must be a brilliant victory, « decisive blow, though, to restore peace and ‘confidence 10 the minds of the people here. In regard to the non-intercourse policy proposed in the Virginia Legislature, I would here remark that the people Of Alabama are strongly in favor of the adoption of such a measuro. A bill is now before a speci# committee of the Legislature in this State, now in session, to place a discri- ‘tminating tax upon all goods imported from the North. It is proposed to operate against the manufacturers and mer- chants In such of the Northern States as have passed en- actments nullifying the Fugitive Slave law, and will pro- bably have the effect of bringing the people of New Eng- land to their senses. The South has everything to gain and nothing to loge by the non intercourse policy; and with the knowledge of the fact, she is determined to try the experiment, and enforce the dostrine just as long as it will be considered necessary and profitable. Will the agricultural, manufacturing or commercial interest here suffer by non-intercourse? Nota whit. On the contrary, the very idea of the policy has given an {mmense impetus to all three of these interests. How will it operate in the North? Not beneficially to the commercial or manufac- turing States certainly. ‘Has the commercial and manufacturing interest of New York and New England anything to gain by inciting the South to the adoption of such measures ag mast inevita- bly lead to the building up of commerce and manufac- tures here? Does net the South by its produce and its patronage boild up large citics at the North, and do not thousands of mechanics in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, ‘New York and the New England States depend upon one Soutbern product alone—cotton—for their very subsist- ence? Deprive them of this single article, to be obtained nowhere else except at the South, and they will starve. The idea that merchants wil) always bay thelr goods wherever they can buy them cheapest may be the law of trade, but when the Legislatare of this or'any other Southern State provides by @ special enactmont that thos» merchante must pay a heavy tax before selling such goods, how will the law of trade operate then? Oh, no; the law of non-intercourse cannot {all to do irreparable ipjury to the commercial and manufacturing intérests of the North, while it cannot poesibly hurt the South. ‘The bill for the reorganization of the militia’ in tht State, appropriating $200,000 for the purchase of arms the Senate yesterday, It is proposed to divid: passed a aaa ee eee eee and to assign command of each aivision to ofloers Yaamodiately under RE : 7 pa i} 5e 3s Fa i i dH i t i z g &F
