\ minaied, and some are equally horrified to think of Breckinridge being the democratic schoice. But the truth is that they are all atsea as to the democratic nominations, and have no reliable information on the subject, for the simple reason that the democrats know nothing about it themselves, Perhaps the Patriot would kindly oblige the democracy by informing them what candidate the black republicans would like to see eet up at Charleston, ia order that they may have the pleasure of knocking him down, We have oo doubt, if the choice of the autislavery party is only expressed, the democracy will pay it all the attention and dis- tinguished consideration which it deserves, No doubt the Charleston Convention will nomi- paie tbe mao indicated for their eelection by the organs and’ Teaders of republicapism., Vextination or Provs Pussury.—It ie strange that some men when they get hold of a good thing cannot be satisfied with the quiet enjoyment of it, Either their vanity, their ambition or taeir temper steps in and sacrifices the favors that fortune has lavished mpon them. Tt bas been a subject of wonderment with Many that Mr. Pilsbury should have quarrelled with the comfortable position created for him under the Police Commission. He was in the receipt of a snug salary, had everything pretty much his own way,and made light of the duties of his office. Though intended to be a model Superintendent, be seems not to bave taken the least trouble to work himself up to the fixed standard, With the exception ot the crusade which be waged against the violators of Sabbath observances, his official course has been the gentlest and least obtru sive imaginable. He has been dvath upon Sun- duy recreations, and has waged flerce war against the innocent enjoymenis of the work ing population, To counterbalance this excess of rigor, he has allowed thieves, burglars and sowdies full tmmunity; for under his model ad- pinistration crime bus increased to a greater extent than under that of almost. any of his predecessord, With such a sinecnre people might well feel surptised that Superintendent Pilsbury should not bave remained content with the blessings the gods bad provided bim. The wonder has been increased by certain revelations made by one of the black republican organs, This jour- hal—» good autbority—states that in order to evenre Mr. Pilsbury’s services as Superinten- dent of Poliee, “ several public spirited gentle- men ot this city—-republicans in politics—con- tributed to protect him against the pecuniary loss be would sustain by leaving otber more lucrative employments.” Under this arrange ment, it seems, bis income was made up to ten thousand dollars » year. The Tribune, another black republican organ, very properly takes exception to the principle ef a public officer, paid out of the public treasury, being the re- Cipient of private gratuities under any pretext whstever. The public will agree with it in this conclusion, It remains to be ascertained with what precise views tbe public spirited individu- als in question put their bands in their pockets to secure the invaluable services of Mr. Pils- bury for this community. People are so cen- sorious that it will probably be said that this act of disinterested civism must have had its quid pro quo. To stifle scandal it will be advisable for Mr. Pilsbury to let the world know the numes of the parties who have thus generously acted a8 paymasters for the public. Otherwise it will be asked, with some show of reason whether the Superintendent was really the se vant of the Police Commissioners or of the individuals who have signalized themselves by this unbeard of munificence. Shall we get this information voluntarily’ We are afraid not. The transaction does not look as if it would bear veatilation. There is nother means of arriving at it, however, which, unless an exp!aaation is promptly forth- coming, might be employed to get at the facts. We sve that Alderman Brady has been sub- penaed before the Grand Jury to give evi Gence as to the truth of the statements made by bim in regard to un attempt having been made to bay his vote for the confirmation of Mu. Tucker's nomination for the Presidency of } the Croton Aqueduct Board. That charge, if \ it can be proved, is unquestionably an offeace against the laws of the State; bat it is not more ot an offence or more opposed to the iaterests community thua for a clique of ate individuals to snbsidize a public -r, for purpoces known ouly to themselves, and which, whatever may be the coloring | given to them, can find no justification ia ne- cessity or ueage. Lf, therefore, a clean breast be not immediately made of the motives of thie inttange proceeding, we call upon the Grand «Jury to take action in the premises und'to briag ‘Superiptendent Pilsbury before them. It would be curious if it should turn out that Anore who have been distinguishing themselve- in eu forcing Sunday ordinances and observauces should be the very persons who bave commit ted such @ viclation of law and propriety iu inducing the heed of the police to take pay from them, in disregard of the obligations winch be bad contracied towards the public. ————_—— Ws trom Mexico. gr Now Ontraxs, March 4, 1860, Advices from Northern Mexico, recetvet via Galveston, report that Carvajal as seckivg Amerioan aid for Juan it fa also reported that siiramou hae ordered Corunas to bold ont unul Marca, when ie would recetve reinforce: ents. a Sews from Havana.
