FIRE IN WEST FORTY-NINTH STRERT—A MAN NEARLY SUFFOCATED. About one o’clock yesterday morning, an alarm of fire was given from a frame building, in Forty-ninth street, near Eleventh avenue. On repairing to the premises, the police found smoke iseuing from the second floor, and on forcing open the door, discovered a bed in a blaze and the occupant of the room, a man named John Crooks, lying upon the floor nearly suffocated. 8 could give no acrount of how the fire originated, and, as he is a man of diteo'ute habits, it is eupposed that, while 1utoxicated, he aceidentally set fire to the bed with a candle, The loss in farniture is sbout $10. Hall, Benedict & Co. 21 Park row, was found suspended by a towel toa beam in the loft of the building. Carter was last seen about four o’ciock Wednesday afternoon, and it is supposed that he committed the deed during that night, from the fact that when the body was found it was quite cold and rigid. ‘The towel with which be hung bimeelf was fixed toa beam laid borizontally over two piles of shoe boxes. Deceased was fifteen years of age and resided with his perents at No. 100 Hudson street. He was of very regular babits, and his absence on Wednesday evening caused his parents so moch anxiety that hia mother went to the store about one o'clock yesterday morning to Jeara if any accident bad befallen him, but wag of coarse upable to learn anything, the atore being closed. Coroner O'Keefe held an inquest this morning, but nothing was elieited to throw light upom the cause of the act. The jury rendered a verdict of ‘suicide by hanging.” Carter had been employed in the store about ten months, and waa greatly esteemed by his fellow employés. DESPERATE FIGHT BETWEEN TWO MEN IN THE EIGHT- RENTH WARD— ONE OF THE PARTY FATALLY STAB TED. Between seven and eight o'clock last evening a terrible fight cocurred between two men, at No, 110 East Twenty second street, pamed Philip Armand, a German cabiue’ maker, and Tully McDonnell, keeper of a liquor store at the above place, It eoems that for some time back both of the parties bave been on unfriendly terms, aad each bad made threats against one another. About saven o'clock last evening, Armand was standing jn the hall way of the house No, 110 when McDonnell came out, and, observing bis antagonist, made some vulgar remark to him, Itis not known whether Armand had stationed himself there with a view of coming in contact with McDonnell, buvit seems that he carried with him a large sword, and which be held io his hand wheu McDonnell came out, McDonnell, it is alleged, ordered Armand to Jeave the ball, which he declined to do, remarking that be hada right to stand there so long aa he felt dis posed.
