Wepnespay, Jan 11—6 P. M. ‘The stringency in the money market is unabated; seven per cent is gladly paid by brokers, and ebrewd lenders obtain a commission besides. It is likely that the banks are reducing their line in or- der to keep pace with the decline in their specie. If the Bub-Treasurer at this point were to call om the enccessful bidders for the new treasury notes to pay up the amounte of their awards, it would pro- duce quite a panic in the market. As it is, he wisely grants delay till Congress organizes, thus saving the govercment some needless expense for interest, and sparing the banks some pressure. The parties who took their share of the new batch of notes have not made much by the operation; money canuot be borrowed on them at six, and we presume.that ary quantity even of the six per cents can be had at par. Some of the old notes bearing 43 per cent interest are being turned into the treasury for redemption; if the present stringency in the money mar- ket Jasts many days longer, all the overdue notes bearing Jess than 5} per cent will be paid in for duties, or presented for payment. Should business t ive this year, Mr. Cobb will find his Trek esring back upon him faster than is agreeable, and Congress will proba- ; bly be asked to authorize a reissue of Treasury notes bearing seven per cent. At the disconnt houses the market continues steady; the very best short acceptances go at 7 per cent; bat first class business paper, 4a 6 months to run, can be had at from & to 10,and very good paper, such as was Jately current at 7 a 8, sells at one per cent a month. There is, of course, nothing doing in foreign ex- change to-day. The domestic exchanges coatinue uraltered at the South; in the West they are grow- ing more unfavorable to that section—*ith the ex- ception of Cincinnati, at which point the shipments of provisions keep bills down. The following are the guotations of sight bills on New York at the cities nientioned, the rates beivg in all cases for the corrency of the cities at which the bills are drawn:— Chiesgo. Onciun St. Louis Thilucte Iphita, Baltimore... Mobile, é Now Ur leaus,,,. “ The stock market opened this morning with » better feeling, and some symptoms of a demand for stocks; but the weakness of Reading soon became contagions, and some leading operrtors moving boldly on the bear side, prices gave way generally Between the boards still lower prices were realized; in the afternoon there was a slight rally, but the market closed inactive. Reading was the heaviest stock on the list. It opened at 39}, but sold down to 374 hetween tne boards, and closed in the after- boon at 3&4 bid, against 40 at the close yesterday. The proceedings at the general meeting on Monday seem to have led to heavy sales by some of the Jarge holders, Central looked better at one time of the day, and sold at 74, buyer's option; bat it fell off afterward and closed in the afternoon at 733 bid, against 73} at the close yesterday. The Western shares do not fiuctaate much. As compared with the closing prices yesterday, Galena declined 3, Rock Island 3, Illinois Central j, Michigan Central 1, Southern guaranteed j per cent. The first week's earnings in January on these roads have not yet come to hand, with the exception of the Winois Central, which shows an increase of 17,000, and the Toledo, which also shows well; as a general rule, we presume that the traffic wil) not vary much from last year's. Panama was freely sold for cash, evidently in consequence of the money merket; it closed at 126, against 126] bid at the close Jast evening. Missouris continue to decline, notwithstanding a romor that the Legislature is going to fssue no more bonds. Sales were made this morning at 78%; the closing price was 783, against 78] bid at the close yesterday. A year ago, at thie date, Miseoaris were selling at 90 per cent The late decline, we feel satisfied, is more due to the non-organization of Congress and the factions Proceedings of members than to the prospect of fresh issues. If the present dead lock continues, Missouris will sell at fifty cents on the dollar.
