Funeral of the Rev. D. G. Durning. ®OLEMN HIGH MASS AT ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL, ‘The funeral of the Rev. D. G. Durning, whose death at ‘Mewark,on Friday last, has already been announced, ‘teek place from St. Patrick's Cathedral at noon yesterday. ‘She remains of the deceased were conveyed to the Cathe- @ral in the morning, and during the services occupied a [Peaition in the middle aisle in front of the altar. The coffia ‘was of mahogany, ornamented with six silver plated han- @es, on cach of which a plain, unadorned cross was en- (raved. Tne plate bore the following inscription:—“Rev. Daniel G. Durning, died December 6, 1859, aged 40 ” Ateleven o’clock, solemn high mass waz celebrated by the Very Rev. William Starrs, Vicar General, as- @ieted by Rev. Fathers McEvoy, Woods, McNerny, @uwnn, Brennan and Barry. Among these who took part fm the services were algo the pastors of the several a in this chy, Brooklya and Newark. Dr. Nelli- go, of St. Columba’s church, in Twenty-fifth street, the sermon. It scemed remarkable, he said, God was not merely gatislied with the words of his ‘eburch and of his text, for he often spoke in a more pal- rp manner, and ima voice which reached everybody. w often did that voioe—the voice of lamentation—come forth from their happy homes, as if to warn them that ‘hey, too, must follow the dear ene who was dead, and must prepare for the mevitable end to which all must ‘ome? They were called together to solemnize a sad event, ‘the death of one who was well known, and endeared t0 all—one the kindners of whose disposition and the disin- teresteduess of whose nature had commended themselves to all with whom he came in contact. He ouloriaed his devotion and humility, his untiring labor among his floc hic kindness, bis charity aud his unwearying zeal in a ministering to the calls of sickness, Hehad denied him- self luxaries, he might alleviate the sufferings of those in want. It must have come home to their hearts to behold the form of one so beloved stricken down in Geath, and they must have folt rejoiced had they followed the wise admonition and advice which he was ever ready to ®ve. These were solemn warnings; and they should re- member the truth of the text that the “day was passed and the night was at hand.” These woxdle, which were words of sorrow to them, were words of joy to the ministers of God, because they felt that the reward of one who bad labored’ in God’s cavse was at length at hand. He concluded with praying that He who was [ead of the Church might give the brother miniswers of the deceased the grace to labor and work in God's graciom: cause After the sermon the interesting ceremonivs of the re quiem mass were performed sround the coffic. A pro- cession was then formed and the coffin borne to the vaulls beneath the church, where, after the recital of the burial wervice, it was deposited. Rev. Mr. Durning formerly held the position of aseistant tor at St. Peter's churc hgBarclay street, in this city. le had previously been one OF the assistant pastors at ihe Gatiedral, and was recently the pastor of St. Mary’s eburch at 'Rondout.
