LOSS OF LIFE— COLTON BURNT, ETC. ‘Avousta, Ga., Nov. 17,1859. A fire broke out last night at Adapta, destroying seve- ral new stores on Whitehall street, and involving @ loss in Duildings and merchand se of $100,000. Two children ‘wore burnt to death. * At about the same time six fine sores on Main street were burnt, together with a warehouse and four hundred bales of cotton. Loss estimated at $75,000, Avousta, Nov. 17, 1859. Tho fire at Atlanta lasted from half-past eleven on Wednesday night till two o'clock. It origivated in a <drng store near Sbackelfora’s auction room, and burned to the Fulton Bank. Tho Zalelligencer office is in ruins, with the two next blocks up Whitehall street. The fire then extended up Alabama street to Down’s grocery, and up Whitehall to Holbrook’s hat store, ‘The pritcipal pro- perty burned is Miller & Co.'s printing olice, Braun- muller’s music store, White & Co.'s store, Brown's clothing warchouse, Wallace’ store, Lockbart'’s broker's shop, Shackelford’s auction store, Goleman’s large grocery, Jones’ book store, Dechong’s daguerreotype rooms, Cuttings’ dry goods store, Fish’s law office, and several’ confectionerics, tailors and bar- bers. Two children were burned to dcath and another is missing; the mother was awfully burned, but is living. ‘The loss is believed to be $300,000. The Fugitive Slave Case at Cape Cod. When he his spcech, the Court said that tho testimony on that int might proceed, and reserved tho expression of Eis views of the law. The government fluished their case and Mr. Scudder »pened the defence. He cou. tended that what was done was not within the local jurisdiction; that the slave was an involuntary deposit in the bands of the captain of the Orlando, which he was bound at common law to keep safely and’ return, and that under the constitution of tho United States the defendants were bound to restore the fugitive. About twenty-five witnesses were called and sworn, and among ‘others wero W. Raymond [ve and £. N. Winslow, Civil Engineers. The defence then went on to putin evidence from depositions taken in Pensacola. Objecticns were made to wd evidence at every point, ‘and much of the testimony was excluded. Deccased, it appeared, was a native of Germany, aged 26 years, and was a shoemaker by occupation. He recently married, and intending to go into business for himself, wrote to Germany fer the suin of $400, which his parents owed him. Recently he roceived a letter from his father, condemning him for marrying, and refusing to remit the $400. The letter scomed to af- fect him deeply, for he wrote back tant, sodner than ask again for pecuniary assistance in that quarter, he would hang himself, The hash treatment he received at the hands of bis parents caused him to become despondent and weary of life. Finding that thero was no response, Mrs. Yoller proceeded to the woodhouse, where she found deceased auspencted by the neck, and apparently quite dead. De ceased’s feet touched the ground, and so natural was the position, that when his wife first entered the place she tapped him on the shoulder, and asked nim what delayed him 80 long, betore she actually suspected what had taken place. It was only when she found thero was no response and saw a cord around his neck that she realized the hor- ror of her situation.
