Congiderabie excitement Pang last evening, cepe- clally in the vicinity of tho City Hall, on account of tho report that the Acting Mayor, Wiiliam MePhail, had been mortally wounded by J. Marshall Hanna, one of the ro- porters of the Baltimore Swn. It appears that Mr. McPhail, as the Acting Mayor, proceeded to the office of tho police and firo alarm telegraph, which is directly opposite his residence on Holliday stroot, for tho of uscertain- {og tho condition of affairs throughout tho city, and there met several friends, with whom he entered into conversa- tion. Whilst thus engaged, Mr. Hanna ontered the room, and «fter inquiring as to the news of the day and evening, conversed with the operators about genoral matters, a3 was his custom. Ono of the operators made some jovial remorks about the shaw] which Hanna wore, whereupon tho Inter drew a Colt’s revolver, and attempted to shoot Harcourt, one of the operators. ‘in tho excitement of the occasion, tho wea was dircharged, wheroupon Mr. McPhail exclaimed that he was shot, and walked towards the main entranoe of the building, but before reaching tt, ho fell prostrate in the main entry. At first it was sup- pased that bo was mortally wounded; nevertheless todical ald was immediatly summoned, and Dr. O'Donovan’s fervices were first availed of. He was eoon after joined by Drs. Wiliams, Whitridge and H. P. P. Yeates. Mdserh examination it was found that the bal! had taken effect in tho thigh, about two inches below the op {uflicting a serious if not dangerous wound. Mr. McPhail wns at onco conveyed to his residence and ro- ceived the best attention. ~ Tt appears that Mr. Hanna was standing outside tho rail- ing which dividea the room, while Mr. Harcourt and a number of other gentlemen, including tho Acting Mayor, wore inelde of tt. Hanna having tho pistol in his ri be hand, Mr. Harcourt seized the barrel of it with his hand, and thus diverted its direction from himself to a ine running betweon him and Hanna. We advise him to do se, and when he up his new quarters, let him assume the namo of Bartholomew Smith. Street Cleaning by Machinery. OPPOSITION FROM THE BLACK REPUBLICAN FAT CON- TRACT COMPANY. The recent temporary contract entered tnto between the Mayor, Comptrollor and the City Inspector, on the part of the city, with Rovert Smith, to clean the principal streets of the city by machinory, ia likely to prove a suc- cess, predicating this opinion after a two weeks’ trial. By this arrangement the city will savo from sixty to seventy thoueand dollars per annum.
