fhe odium on them. This is confirmed by the fact that the shoulder-hitters and bruisers who figured there are well known to belong to the Tammany faction in this city, who acted in concert with the Regency clique. Their tactics in this were the same as in the case of ‘Wise’s letter—their object was to create a pre- _judice in the State Convention, and in the pub- lic mind, and at the Charleston Convention, against their political opponents, by charging them with what they did themselves. This idea seems to be borrowed from those treble-dyed scoundrels in Ireland called “in- formers,” who commit murders and other orimes and charge them upon their innocent neighbors, in order that they may pocket the blood money given by the government. One of these villains, called Delahunt, was hanged short time ago in Dublin for cutting the throat of a confiding child whom he enticed from ita home. The wretch attempted to fas- ten the crime on the poor mother, and went to the authorities to inform against her. But jus- tice and truth were too strong for him, and he ‘was made to dangle from the gibbet which he @esigned for others. This is the model copied by Confidence Cassidy & Co. for their political villany; but “murder will out” in political as- ‘Sagsination as well as in child slaughter, and they have as signally failed as their Irish proto- type, and will be as signally punished. An un- pleeping retribution ever visits perfidy, soon or late. Treachery, like chickens, comes home to roost. Though the Albany Regency laid their plans with great care to monopolize the organization of the Convention at Syracuse, a party from this city, taking a leaf out of their own book, and “bettering the instruction,” baffled their ~design. It was “diamond cut diamond.” By & clever coup they got first possession of the or- ganization, and placed Cagger, Cassidy & Co. in the false position of disturbing the Conven- tion, and acting in an irregular and disorderly manner all through, which will undoubtedly tell against them at the Charleston Convention; to say nothing of their foul conspiracy against Governor Wise and the vantage ground of popular sovereignty occupied by the rival faction. The Republican Convention was much better managed. The proceedings were conducted in an orderly manner, and if the leaders had dif- ferences they did not expose them to public view. This gives them a decided advantage with a large class of law-abiding and order- loving citizens. The leaders of the Democratic Convention exhibited all their dirty linen to the public gaze, and seemed to glory in their own shame. The treachery of the Confidence men had its fitting finale ina public brawl of crimination and recrimination, and at last in a butcherly melee of prize-fighters and rowdies ‘who have graduated at the Tammany coal hole and the Five Points. This is the only advantage the republicans “have over the democracy. As far as the pecu- liar interests of the State are concerned, par- ticularly the canals, they are both alike. The leaders of both parties have mismanaged ‘the canals in turn, and waxed fat on the spoils connected with them. The respective organs of both have proved by documentary evidence this plunder againr. each other; and it is only a struggle between them to see who shall have the consummation of the final job by which the canals are to be transferred wholesale to the Central Railroad interest. As to State inerests and State politics, there is not as much difference between the republi- can and democratic tickets as there is between tweedledum and tweedledee. But in a national view the.democracy have the advantage. The republican ticket is identified with the princi- ples and policy.of William H. Seward, who has threatened, if he ever gains the ascendant, to wage war to the knife against the South and its institutions, and thus to dissolve, “like the baseless fabric of a vision,” that Union founded ‘by the wisdom of our ancestors—to inaugurate an “irrepressible conflict,” the end of which no man can foresee, and whose horrors the most vivid imagination cannot conceive. On this ground, and on this aione, every good citizen must vote against the republican ‘ticket, in- volving, as it does, an issue of life or death to the Union of the States. Important from Hayti. Madame Gassier sung Rosina charmingly. In refinement and delicacy of execution she has not been equalled since La Grange, while Gassier's voice is better than that of her predecessor. Brignoli_ was in good voice and sung well. Amodio was irresistibly funny in Don Basilio, and Morelli's Figaro is a good performance as is quite well Known to our operatic readers. ‘The audience was in the best of humor, and the prima donna rece! universal commendation.
