TO TRE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. In your paper of yesterday, August 31, 1859, you pud- Wah from the Pittsburg Oommercial Journal an article headed “Forgery of $27,000—Exiensive Operations ot Two New Yorkers—Arrest of One of the Criminals” ‘This article, false in nearly every particular, and withou ® semblance of truth in any of its material allegations, is calculated todo me great and general injustice, and | therefore wish the publication of this note as an answer to the article, until a judicial and more full reply may be Given to it, It is sufficient for me to say that I became, at tho ro. quest of the Bank Commissioners of the Monongahsla Valley Bank, a subscriber for $27,500 of the stock: tnar Dut two nundred shares were takea in my own name, the balance all boing taken in the name of tha Commissioners or their friends; that for this I paid in to the treasurer of the Commissioners that amount in money, entirely apar. and independent from the money or subscription of 8. G. Langdon. ‘Taat I never saw Langdon until afew days before the organization of the bank, when he proposed to the Commissioners—then in New York—to become a subscri- ‘ber. He was introduced to me by a gentloman of hign character and respectability. 1 had nothing to do with, and knew nothing about, his certificates, until he said to J L. Langley, the cashier of tne ia Valley Bank, ana E. k, Keisey, Eeq., of New York, who were in company with me, that it would be necessary for hia to get the money on the certificate of deposits described and wanted aid 10 so doing. Mr. Langley at ‘once stated that be was acquainted with Mr. Jones, of the Citizens’ Bank, and that there would be no difficulty in getting currency for the certificates. ‘This conversation occurrea just betore we reached Pittsburg, and on arriving there il of the partios named went to the Citizeas’ Bank, myself included, and Mr. Langley introduced each to Mr. Jones. When, after a conversation of about five minutes, in which all toek a part, Langdon endorsea the certificates, which bot one of ua had before seen, and gave them to Jones, who at once bad the currency counted out for them. ‘The who'e party then proceeded to McKeesport, and the following afternoon the Commissioners beiog iu session, I paid in the money on the stock which J had subscribed for, and Lapgoon and others paid in the money on the stock they had subscribed for. ‘The Commissioners thereupon made thelr certidsate and obtained letters patent. On the third day Biowte the paying in of the money, the Citizens’ Bank discov: the forgery. Mr, Jopes went to McKeesport, and on his ar- rival Langdon ran away. I at once suggested that tue freasurer of the Commissioners and Dr. Miller, the Presi- dent of the bank, be sent for, and that the money be paid back to the Uitizes’ Bank. Os consultation this course was agreed to, and the money paid by Langdon was paid The Commissioners, who were apprised of my acquaint- ance with Langdon, exou)pated me from all blame at once, I retainea my swock for some weeks, until I found otner Ee to make up Lapgdon’s.subscription, when the ok was fully orgapized. About this time, owing to some misunderstanding as to permenent organization, I fold all the interest I nad in the bank. From the Srat no one was more surprised at the forgery than myself; no one suffered so much by it; no one 80 anxiously urged the vigorous prosecution of the offender; and to this hour no one bas been so malignantly and sbamelesely calumpiated about itas myself. The reason will be apparent when J state to the public that I am in- debted to J. B. Guthrie, Mr. Oobb’s spacial agent, for the appearance of my name in the position it occupies in the je. T appeal to each of the acting Commissioners and to tue officers of the Monongahela Vatiey Bauk for the trath of the above statement. In relation to my arregt Lhave simply to state that! bave been at my office, at 111 Broadway, daily, unth the Ist of August, when, suilering acutely trom a difficulty in my lounge, I left town under the aovice of my physician, apd that since that time I bavs beca all of the time, ex- cept a few cays, at Muford, Pike county, Pa.
