It inc:uaes two comic pantommies—“ Bianco” and “The Schoolmaster”—with Gabriel and Francois, and Marletts Zentretta on the tight rope. At tha Bowery theatre a new drama by Poole, called 4¢The Black Knight; or, The Days of Chivalry,” a series of ableanx, ‘Cain ana Abel,” and another new piece called ~“‘Pike’s Peak,” make up the entertainment promised for this evening. At the Palace Garden Arthur Napoleon, the young and Clever pianist, bas his benefit this evening. There wil be a grand vocal and instrumental concert in the hallo the Garden. Bawerirs.—At tbe Bowery theatre to-morrow night Mr ‘Nims, 8 well known amateur actor, has a complimentary ‘benefit. At tne National on Saturday the epirited mana” ger, Miss Bell Carr, has a complimentary benefit, which should be a very good one. Tax New Bowsry fusatrs.—This theatre, which occu" Pies three spacious lots on the Bowery, betwoen New Canal and Hester sireeis, will be, except the Academy of Music, the largest place of amusement in the city. Iw exterior dimensions are 75 feet on the Bowery, 204 feet depth, and 100 feet on Elizabeth street. The auditorium is divided into w pit, 72 by 90 feet and seating 2,500 per. Bons, and three tiers of boxes, which will hold 2,000 more. ‘The stage is 85 feet deep and 50 feet wide at the Proscesium. On either side of the proscenium are the ‘woene rooms, dressing rooms, &c., and the stage space is left perfectly clear for any grand effect that may be arranged for it. The entrance on the Bowery is through a bandsome oolosade supported by iron pillars of the Corintbian order. This entrance is twenty-five fest wide. The lobbies, eto., are all spacious, and the line of sight is claimed to be perfect. In general appearance the house clovely resembles the old Bowery, while the new theatre has ‘‘all the modern improvements.”” The scene- ry, &., of the Broadeay theatre has ‘been brought hore, and is now being repainted by the Brothers Smith. Mr Hillyard is at work upon the curtain and act drop. The Interior decorations are to be white and gold, ewith a froecoed ceiling by Guidicini. The tho. etre bas been purchased by Messrs. Fox & Liogard for the round sum of $160,000, and they will open it for the regular seagon next Monday. The prices will be at the popular standard of the old Bowery, which the mmapagors of the new house directed so successfully. The company includes Messrs. J. 8. Hanley, J. 8. Nagle, J. Pilgrim (dramatist), G L. Fox, J. Lingard, Charles Fox, ‘Weish Edwards, James Dunn, C. Wilkinson, Miss 0. Cap. pell, Mrs. Nagle, Miss Kate Fisher, Mrs. France and seve ral others. The theatre externally is a very handsome ‘building, and quite an improvement upon the old wooden ‘concerns which it replaces. ALTERATIONS 6F THE MeTRoPoutaN THEAtas.—The Metro- 4politan theatre has been more or less pulled down and reconstructed; in fact, ii has been gutted front and rear, and a new theatre built under ite roof and within ite four ‘walls, The executors of the Lafarge cetate gave a lease to Mr. Stuart for five years, and Mr. Stuart consigned the old building to the tender mercies of Mr. Bourcicault, ‘under whose direction the work of demolition and recon- jAtenction bag been done. A new portico is building on *Brosdway, and the entrance hall has been swept clear and remodelied: the decoration here is pale violet and gold. ‘On reaching the vestibule we lose ourselves completely. ‘The staircases are not where they wed to be—what was ‘right is now left, and what was up is down. On being seonducted inside we find the arrangement of the new theatre is somewhat similar to Laura Keene’s and Wal Inck’s—that is, there is a pit, dress circle and gallery. ‘The pit is ratber amall; the orchestra chairs in front being ‘very commodious, somewhat encroach on this part of the house. The decoration of the auditorium is extremely simple, the colors being pale blue, violet, pink and stone ‘white, with lees gold than usual, The dome of the ceil- ing, which spreads over the entire parquette, is a pure Diue sky, in the centre of which is a group of allegorical figures; the reat of the roof in pale violet and stone white, in pancls, A light arcade, on fluted pil. Jars, encloses the gallery. The front of the tier? {s ornamented with crystal chandeliers, between which ‘are light balustraded balconies bearing flowers. The pro. ‘scenium is much lower than usual in American theatres, the curtain opening being thirty-six feet wide by twenty- eight feet high, the same width as Laara Keene’s, but not #0 lofty. Over the proscenium and between it and the celling of the theatre is a balustrade, and opening through which ts geen an exterior sky view. This is a new idea, ‘and is worked in with part of a new system of ventila- tion. The stage room—that is the space behind the cur- tain—is very large, and 1p proportion to the working stage ia perhaps the largest in the world. It is one hundred feet wide and seventy nine feet deep. It hasa depth of twenty-five feet below, with two floors for machinery, and a beight of thirty eight fect above. A whole scene may, therefore, be moveu off in one piece on either side, Or let down m ove pice, or tauen up boaily, Below tue Parque te floor wre thee gre t chambers, to be 4 in Wn: the floor beneath the seats is open and latiiosd; the Hesling appsratue, of jroa tides, je placed in. bere cham. hers, and the hot air rises f/om thencs through tho Lutticod *pertures over ibe whole urea of the parquetio, Mr Boureicault claima vriginality in this idea, Avotuer po- | cubarity we observed was the form of the froat of the elege; & is usvally a bow or sweep of « oirsis into the boure, but here it is the ocoatrary; it ia hollowed cut, eo that the footlighie in the centre aro nearer to the curtain than the foothgbts at the sides, We under. stand that a pew eystem of machinery is to be {ntroduced on the stage, Suob are the msin features of this new place of entertainment. Whether they are improvements or Bot the public will judge within a weok or tea days bence. The company will be headed by Mins Agnos Robertson, Mrs. John Wood, Mr. Jefferson, Mr. George Holand, Mr. Peareon, Mr. Davenport, Mr. T. B. Johnston, Mrs. Blake, Sara Stevens, Mrs. J. H. Allen and Mrs. Henry ‘Vining, now to our boards. We have also some new im- portations trom England, and some also from our provin- Cial theatres. The stege will be under the direction of Wr. Bourcicault, and the front of the house administered ‘vy Mr. Stuart. The opening piece, we have heard, isa musical fairy version of Dickens’ story, called ‘ Dot; or @ Cricket on the Hearth.” Miss Robertson will ba the Dot; Mrs, Wood, Milly Slowboy; Jefferson plays Caleb, acd Jobpstone Tackieton, Altogether the entorprise looks Woll, The old theatre proved itself inefficiea for dra- matic purposes; if the new one prove a success it will add another ornament to the city, and a material advantage to our sources of entertaining an oyergrowing population and visiters. Tar Nostuern Lights 1s Avcuer —It is not often that we are favored at thin reason of the year with those bril liant stmospheric phenomeon 60 well known as the north ern lights. Lest evening, however, there was a grand exbibition which illuminated the whole city with the brightness of moop)ighi, while the appearance of the sky was more striking than wo bave ever seen it during the prevalence of this phenomenon. At one time the tortbern portion of the heavens assumed an almost blood red appearance, while here and there long streake o: light sbot up from the horizon.to the zenith. These sepidly changed their place and their form until they ex tended over the greater part of the sky, breakiog through the reddieh hues and finally covering nearly the whole face of the heavens, This celestial exhibition lasted some twoor three hours and was attended with a marked cbange in the temperature of the air, which became much cooler. It was a wintry visiter which made its sppearance somewhat out of season it is true, but which ‘Was uoi altogether unwelcome therefor. BrookJyn City News.
