Very Fen Ae yet: 86 East Tururacern Srucer, New Yori, August 25, Contested Boundary Between Pern and Ecuador. COMBINATION OF PERU AND BRAZIL TO EXCLUDE HER FROM TAB FREE NAVIGATION OF THE AMAZON, TO THE EDITOR OF THE PERALD. Tu 1857 the government of Ecuador made an allotmeng of four and ® balf million’ of acres of its public domain on the Amazonian frontier of the republic, and granted land warrants thereon to the British holders of Ecuadorian onde issuedfon the conversion of the balance of its pro rata share of the national debt of the old Colombian Con- federation. Mr. Pritchett, the agent of the bondholders, spent two years in the exploration of the territory of the republic, with the object of selecting the most eligible lo- cation of those land warrants, Itappears the limits of the republic were not acca- rately defined at the time of the dissolution of old Colom- bia into the three republics of Ecuador, Now Grana‘ta and Venezaels, and that the frontier on the side of Brazil and Peru js at present under dispute. Peru claims an im- mense tract of land northward and westward, even to Pa- Pillacta, almost within sight of the city of Quito. It bas deen for a long time, and still continues, im possession of Ecuador, and wherever Mr. Pritchett travelled he found Ecuadorian suthorities, showing that he was within the territory of Ecuador; and he located therein the four and a half million acres of land granted to the bondholders, as above mentioned. Peru founds her claim on an edict of the King of Spain im 1802, which gave the ecclesiastical juriediction over these territories to the Bishop of Lima. The emi- nent historian, Prescoit, tells us that the King of Spain used to let his pen fall on the map of South America and divide it inte provinces in that fashion, without the slight est understanding or knowledge of thé country; but so imposelbie was it found to extend even the clerical juris: diction of this bishopric over such distant the scheme was never carried out. The King of Spain 4 long since ceased to reign in those districts, and many treaties have eudeequently been conciuded, cancelling his preposterous territorial arrangements, All authentic and reliable maps of those regions show that the southern frontier line of Ecuador and Peru is the Amazon; and in most maps itis given even over an extensive territory now occup ed by Peru, and lying south of that river asfar an the mouth of its tributary, the Javay. But tho bamiet of Zamora, the most southern part of the lands granted by Ecuador to her English bonaholders, is still considerably north of the Amezon. The claim of land on the part of Pera appears 2 mere pretext for the purpose of meking war upon her peaceful neighbor and sister re- public, ihe Peruvian President and generals seem to be sntmaied by a lust of rapine and conquest, like the first adven‘urous and unscrupulous cevaliers, the Pizarros, the Almegros and the Alvarados. The real causes are said to ‘be the secret instigation and lavish promises of the /ua- dorian ex President Flores, who has. been ignomintous'y expelled ag @ traitor, and also the aliurement of a rich Dooty in the wealthy clty of Guayaquil, which now for up 8 of a year has been cloze'y diocksded by a Porn vian equadron of war steamers threatening to bombard and burn it unless the frontier dictated by Peru aad some other bumillating conditions are acceded to. It is aleo her object 40 close the Amazon agaiust the trade 0’ the world, a} the instigation of Brazil, and to limit it t Brazilian and Peruvian vessels, Ecuador, as a fluvial atate, by comity and well esiablished principles of soverpational jaw, bas au equal right with Peru, Brazii und the otver riverine States, to part'c! in the unin- terropted navigation of the Amazon, from its mouth to euch ports ard rivers withia her own territary borderin thereon as sbe may geo fit. If, therefore, Peru, and stil more Braz'l, can gain their object of depriving Keuador of thore lande, they can real ths Atmazou, and they mean to doit. This post hag been sur. veyed and reported on favorably, anda road to it wae Botively commenced many years ago, and afterwards was neglected and allowed to become overgrown. Tho bark country lies between Cuenca and the Amazon, and was visited by Mr. Pritchett He also went from Quito to Cuneios by the north side of the Paztaza river, a tributary of the Amazon, which is navigable for 300 ton tteamers to witnin 160 miles of Quito. The climate of Canelos is represented to be remarkably healthy. There are traces of gola everywhere on the lower sioges of the Andes towarda the east, and the mountain Oanganate is tepectaliy mentioned as worthy of exploration. hero are wany traditions of its wealth. The extra! ordinary productions of the foreste of Ecuador, the gums, resine, Wax, sarsaparilia, arichova bark, cotton, et cinnamon, ishperigo, ginger, vanida and indigo are all indigenious. The timber is of large size, and suitable for all useful purposes It may be brought to market from both the eastern and western slopes. Canelos, Napo and Mucos, on the eastern slope of ‘the ‘Corditleras, * are no}only extensive but valuable pin fields, Very fine specimens of ruby silver bave been met with, and also in its native wtate. " With these advantages, all that seems required to conrummate the progress and ultimate civilization of Eovador are good ports for the shipment of her products. Guayaquil 1e ber Las princtpal port; thero is another, vefore mentioned, further north, which has been survey- ed by Captain Kellett, R. AN EDITOR BUNNING OFF WITH HIS WIFE'S SISTER—~ ANTECEDENTS OF THE PARTIES. (From the Newark Mercury, August 26.] Considerable excitement bas been occasioned recently in a quiet town onthe line of the New Jersey Cautral Railroad, by the elopement of the editor of onaof the vil- Inge papers. ‘with the sister of his wife. The circumstances of the cage, though not mysterious, are remarkab!y sipgu- Jar, and afford a striking illustration of the frailty’ of ba- man pature. Mr. V., the editor in question, is a gentleman some tbirty-five Zeare of of age, epjoying a good position in society, aud for or twelve eat, has been a member in high standing oe a Christian church. The first positive information which the triends received of the ¢lopement came in the shape of a letter from the fugitives, aanouacing their flight, and that it would be useless to pureue them, ar, when tbe letter reached ite deetinatioa, they would have left for California, Tae husband ett a lettor for bis wife, stating that suflicient money had been jeft bebind ‘to maintain ber for 9 time, and sdding, that if auccesaful jn the Golden State, ‘he would re: mit to her, from time to time, auch ‘means as she might need,” The flight being thus sudden, aud the ais covery producing very naturally aa astounding eff pursuit as of course out of the questicn, and the tesoried wife and Jutle ones, upon whom scarcely # gorrow hat ever fallen, are left to grieve alone and in despair at tho heurth at which the father’s face will, in all probability, never again appear. ‘What caures bave operated to produce this catastrophe— the alienation of a husband from the wile of his love, the surrender of bappincss and good name, and the abandon ment, more than all, of the purity and peace of aa uc fpoited Cbristian life—it is impossible, of course, to com prebend. The facts only can be siated, and the world, whore judgments are seldom too lenient to offenders, must discover for itee:f the cause of the ead and sudden fall ‘And could the world, with {ts hundred greedy eyes, fol low thes courre and read the future of the fugitives, may- hap it wonld be discovered that in this, as to other in stances of hke nature, the rin carries its own punishment with it, mingling ite bitter with every sweetened cup, Wife Desertion and Bigamy by a Spirituall@, John W.
