— THE SCiBNTIFIC CONVENTION. The Whisteenth Annual Convention of the American Association for the Advaacement hn Sraixorimiy, August 9, 1859. The American Association for the Advancement of Beience opeved its thirteenth annual meeting here this morulvg at ten o'c ock, in the City Hall. Tai little city is all sgog with excitement, Tne hotels are already crowded, Tbe Mugsssoit House is uncomfortably filted, ‘aud the proprictor—Mr. EL, Chapin—is bringing oote, nd evory other thing else in the shape of a bed, into re. quisition; but sti! members and their friends from all parts of the Union continue to arrive by every train. Profeesors are numerous, among whom I see Prof, Bache, of the Const Survey, Washingwn; Prof Gil. Nay more; this oneness of ftoelicg, of purpose and of action, too, is even vilai ag itrespects efficient progress at all; as in the human system, the nerve of sensioility is throughout associated and intunalely connected with tbat “of voluntary motion, so thst either an indammation or a paralysir of the one would almost of course be fatal to all that ts ether dwrable or useful in the other; and, as witbal, conversely, an appropriate activity is itself indica- tive of a quick eet vitality, eo the origin and veritable pro- gress of an associated body, rucn as this, are themselves ‘the index and the mesrusé Of 4 ey mpathetic co operation. ‘While in the true provideuce of God 80 macy of us are “permitted to re mesomble kere today, some, even since ‘our last meeting, bave ceased to be numbered with tne Jiving; emo first among them in the order of time was one of our most venerable membere—ove whose devotion to ‘the great object of our association began ere science in this country had fully asserted itself, and co operation, such ap we now have it, was comparatively uaknown. ‘Yet no history of chemistry at least could be regarded as complete which should fail to render duo honor to the genius and carly labors of Dr. Kobert Hare. Bat not chemisiry—astronomy, too, has cause to mourn— to mourn thet he whom she bas lost was cut off ere he bad attained to an age which would entit'e him to the epithet of venerable. Though frequently threatened with dissolution, it is yetin an important seuse true, that up to the limit when he ceased to be seen among living men 5 the cordial grasp and friendly greeting Denison Olmsted, best esteemed and love: | who knew bim best. We must not be betrayed into bis eulogy, which it belongs not to us to utter; ye: ‘assembled as we are at this very soason—even here and it well be reminded that the ive toward a regular and extended observa tion of the periodic meteors, derived from him its pro- jectile force. In our {anual catalogue of members the fatal asterisk is prefixed to yet two other n@tmes—that of Joseph Clark, Eeq , of Cincinnati, elected at our fifth meeting, and Licutenant R. Ap. iby Jones, of Moval dt We ‘deat imposes’ mew gblissions to anita movi e 0 new ann movejgorous effort on! the part of those who. What wonder that 1 needed no second invitation to induce us to select such a place as this; while we at the same time remembered as ‘we ought, bow Springfield invited us now three years ago. And even now, arriving as we do in obedience to our own wo fia that the citizens of Springfield, with a courtesy and a kindness which are their owa best praise, ‘stand ready to welcome—-in the person of thsir most ap- priate representative—a welcome from which I will no Koger detain you. After the applause of the assembly had subsided the Mayor of Springfield, the Hon, Wu1aM B. Catnovn, rose and delivered the following welcome to the men of sci- ence:— i i MAYOR CALHOUN’S ADDRESS. ‘Mr. PREMDENT AND GENTLEMMN OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIA- ‘MON FOR THE ADVANCEMENT oF Scimnck—In behalf of the government and citizens of Springtield, | have the honor ‘and pleagure of bidaing you weicome on this the occasion of your annual meeting. The invitation to pass the week, ‘which you devote as a body to the claims of science, in ‘this comparauve retirement in the valley of the Connecti- cut, was presented to you by the public councils of this | city of a former year; they honored themselves by thus honoring you, and through you the cause of science. The | present city government respond fully and cordially to the ‘wishes, the purposes and the salutations of thoir predeces- _ gors. We bid you welcome, because we know, and see, and | feel the importance of ecience, and of all good learning ‘and knowledge. It is true we have no institution amongat | BB devoted distinctly and systematically to the promotion Of science, aside from (those schools in which, throughout all the accustomed gradations, our youth are trained to ‘that mental culture waich our laws go happily require. But we have here, very largely, tho fruits, tne practical applications of ecience—in that large body of intelligent mechanics and artisans of various clasees, who, if you eball bave leisure to examine their works, will be reminded by you of the great principles developed ‘by youreelves nd your coadjutors, on which their Deautifui and finished products dupend. We welcome you, because we desire to seize this occasion and all occasions to renew our fealty to the great purposes of the men to whom we owe our origin. They pl religion first—bleesed be their memory that they did go, ‘But they made all science, all knowledge, the object of their unceasing devotion and unwearied efforts. We bail ‘the advent of this association amongst ue, because we desire to be drawn off from schemes and exhibitions, ‘merely or mainly ofa sensual or materia! kind, to auch as ‘make man, the immortal gpirit, prominent and pre-emi- nent. We are reminded, too, of the obligations devolving upon us by the provisiong of cur constitutional charter, ‘which declares it to be a “duty” ‘to chori h the interests of literature and the sciences, to encourage private socie- ties and public institutious, to promote agriculture, arts, aciences, commerce, manutactures, and a natural history’ of the country; to countenance und inculcate the princl- ples of humanity and general benevolence, pablic and private charity, industry and frugality, honesty aud punc- Guality, sumcerity, good humor aud all sovial aflvstions aad enerous sentiments amoug the people ’’ Inced not say yw intimately and iudisoslubly these noble re- quirements of the consti(ution of our Commonwealth wtand connected with the pursuits in which the members of this association are engaged. Wo wel- come you to this portion of our country, gentle men, because we think you will find some things to in- terest you in the walks of science, strictly eo calied. You will visit the college in our vicini:y—a rietn= and already distinguished inetitution of iearaing, ia whos bails you ‘will be greeted by the voice of ecieace, and be privileged to witness ite Jargo and increasing appliances and to re- Joice in some of its triumphs. Here, too, in this range of ‘country, you will find (hose tracks of birds and animals, ‘various and numerous, which bave attracted so much bota of popular and acientidc atiection, aud whick carry us | back, in a sort of bewilderment, t> azos, ff not beyond | ‘the power, at least beyond the certainty, of vom- Poetation—those tracks, which have beea made to utter tbe language of science, through the re- gearchos and investigations, as modest as they havo ‘been profound, of an eminent asrociate of your own. ‘We welcome you, because we delight todo nonor to ‘those pursuits which, in retirement acd repose, withou; any of that glare which too often biinds and bedizens, sare working out the true good of man, and garnering treasures of unfading renown.
