Cannoas, May 24, 1860, Reception of Gen Pact at Laguayra——Triumphant Brrance into the Oily—Will He Rum for President, or Return to New York ?—Phe Revoluion—Oustvo and Paes—Popu- larity of the Hx President, dc., Bc. It being known that the ex: President had arrived at La gusyra, aud Sunday, the 15th inst, being appointed for bis Teception in this capital, at five in the afternoon, # temple f liberty was erected in the square opposite San Pablo, sanding on cight pillars, forming a triumphal arch, aud Deautifully got up with many l:criptions, and tastefully @ecorated, at a coet of $1,500. Triumpaal arches were algo erectod at every croseing of the streets in the line of Procession, decorated with evergreens, flowers, flags, and the portraits of the hero they intended to Honor, Nearly every house in the entire city fad a flag dis- played of the nation of ite mates; thas every country in Europe was duly sepresented, with a considerable sprink- ‘of be stars and stripes; all the dipiomats bad their flags Petty en breeze, and ‘the tout ensemble gave & lively and Deautifal appearance. Tbe whole \ine of march was dentely crowded with men, women. and children, waiting the arrival of the old general. At length all wae bast! Several Pac was driven in an Open carriage, and stopped under the temple of liberty, where be aidressed the people, He came as a private citizen; hot a gun was Dred, vot a soldier was wo be seen; bat the whole masses ‘of the citizens were out. It wae the desire of the general ‘bat be be thus received; not as a military cnieftiaa, but as citizen of Venezuela. ‘It is surmised he will be a can. Gidate jor the next Preskiency, but if tue country conti- Bues in Civis war, ibi® lacy he ‘sili retusn to New York and there spend his das We can bardiy form soy jadgment as to the euccees of the contending parties. Each claim to be victorious, and no dependence can be placed in the thousand reporta? bat they agree on ove point—that a vast number have been sens to the spirit world during the present revolation. Castro, varrow minded, ambitious, fall of auspicions and fears, cannot conceive the avble, generous, and truly Beco Miments of Pacz, who has only the welfare of ig country at heart. Besides thia, the former is surroum ed by men whose {uterest it is to keep the two men, whose hands the ceetiny of the repubiic lies, separated, exciting the jealousies ond fears of Castro. ‘Tho popularity Of Paez la so great, that should he Mi! ‘aa his enemies say, agaiust the governmsat, 03 tingle word, one cry, would rouse the whole country, fro the seacoast to the ‘Manos of the Apare; more so, as the di —, jndiguation and bate against Castro ia ‘aniver- snd whore vacillatiog, weak and egotistic policy is the cause now of bloodshed, rapine and ihe most revolting Frond, The only way which will be open to Paez, in order to te his character, will be # voluntary return to hig step which, although eoftened by the many eym- pathics won amonget his countrymen, might not be for ‘their interest bor his own pleasure. As this is the best you may 00m expoot Our Chicago Correspondence. Cmcaco, June 17, 1859. Chicago—Iis Extravagance, Prospets, de —The Little Gi- ant of Ilinois—Grand Visit of 1,200 Excursionists Jrom Cincinnati and Kentucky—Railroad Celebration— ‘Speeches of the Mayors of Chicago, Cincinnati, Judge Douglas, Judge Carter and General Coombs, dc. ‘This great city is rising again like a Pheonix from ite ashes,” aud but little is heard now of the great panic, All they aek for isa ‘good crop.” I never saw a city ‘uit up with go little regard to expense ag Chicago, now styled the ‘Gem of the Lakes.” Its extravagance is al- mort beyond computation, The private establishments on ihe Juke sie 2peviaggns. nat only of great architectural abuity, but the manner in which the plans of tho projectors sre carried out would swamp the staunch. est craft that ever floated on the sea of epecula- ticn, The Micbigan Central Railroad runs from ite Chievgo depot some distance from and paralicl with the lake shore for several miles, thus, making @ eptendid race course for a pleagure eai!, and tho wind being almost inva- riably off the Jake, insures a good “laying” brooze either way, while the piling outeide the ratiroad keeps off the immense Waves and swell Irom the shore and tho sailing ground, Stephen A. Douglag, the “Little Giant” of Miaois, arriv- ed bere afew doys ago. His {rivaty are evidently hard at wok, aod will Bake hmumense ef Turis te gel bia entered ta the next Presidential race; aud his very alfaple and coar. teous cemeanor toward all with whom he comes in con- tact is characteristic of politicians with large expectations from the people. But he is too emall for a Presideat—hig feet won'd not torch the carpet. It would bea pigmy king On the throne of a giant, or Tom Thumb driving a pair of Glephonts. Over 1,200 excursionista arrived here from Cincinnati ast night to celebrate the union between the “Gem of the Lakes” and the “Queen City of the West,’’ and they seem determined todo it thorougaiy. Speeches were aitempt- ed just night. One anxious gentleman retired in disgust: the crowd could not appreciate his talent. Gen. Coombs, of Kentucky, and Dougias let off # little thunder, and the crowa dispersed alter beiog regaled with some good music by the Cincinnati band, ‘this morning the Mayors of Chicsgo and Cincinnati mace complimentary speeches to each other; the “Little anv’? then made his appearance on the veraudah of the Tremont House, and mude the welcoming spec excursionists. ‘It was very good, full of repetition, and not at all gigantic. He was followed by Judge Carter, of Cincinpati, who made a good speech, full of thanks and puné. I could not help thinking that, wit Douglas’ nows- per name, Carter would stand a better chance of be- fa ‘our next President than the “Little Giant.” ‘General Coombs followed Judge Carter, and made an amusing speech. He told how he helped to drive the Indians out of the place where Chicago now stands, somo- thing less than a century ago, leaving nothiug bebind but an cld fort and the wigwam of ‘Littl Tur- tle? (not the “Little Giant’), who was friendly to the American settlers, He (Gen, Coombs) claimed all the people of Chicago as his children and grandchildren, though he does not look tobe more than forty-five at most; be is as full of vigor and music ag a boy, which he claimed to be, and ‘one of the boys,” at that. He ‘wound up by offsetting Judge Carter’s ae to good ad- ‘vantage, and to the [espera amusement of the large crowd prerent. Tickets of invitation bave been issued to the excursiopist® to visit the grand regatta coming off on the luke to day, and alco to visit the United States steamer Michigan, which bas been bere some days, The iake gervice is considered the best within the gift of Uncle Sam, apd consis's in making little pleasure excursions from one port to another on the lake, to keep the rust off, The excursionists will return home tomorrow, bo doubt highly delighted with the numerous speeches, rides, toasts, roaste and general giorl- fications invented tor their especial beneil. ‘The damage to the crops by frost in this vicinity ig Blight, There is always somebody suffering by a short crop, and mountains are created from molehilis; but if the crops throughout the West are not good this year, they Will never be, Fruit {s abundant at Chicago and cheap, it not raised at home, it comes by railroad at such low Treight it is within reach of all. The new Post Office is m fine structure, built of the stone furnished by Rockport, being a handsome drab in color; it will be finished next month. The num- ‘der of new buildings in course of erection is immense and of a very costly character. Papics may shake Chicago & its foundation eud paralyse her trade for a time, but ad ie seem to ie an abiding faith in their strong- ee are some eighty hotels here, so says the Direc- tory, and how they all live Dy a mraey but trtland going West seemingly cann the temptation ‘visit to Chicago; hence ihe hotels are woll sore foedy ‘The city horse Tailroad is in full blast and is being rapidly extended, and business goneraily is raplaly Fevivisg, and but few traces of the panic are at all visib! Census of Red River Settlement. Enumerations of the population at the settlements en Red River and the Againiboine, in the Hudson Bay Company’s territories, were instituted in 1843, 1849 and 1856. The ‘Yesults showed that the nomber of inhabitants was 6,523, ‘which was an increase of 1,880 over the number found in ‘the same locations in 1843, and 1,232 over that in 1849— ‘the greater part of the increase having taken place between 1849 and 1856, Aocording to origin, the population by ee is oa census stood as follows: — 1843, 1849. 1856, Ropers and (half Breede) 571 684 816 Bool 110 129 6 161 92 46 40 27 13 2 2 8 1 1,052 1,080 6,201 6,623 2}664 8,225 Females. 2p 3,208 Average persons to each family 03 6.04 Thus, during the seven years which clapsed between 1849 and 1856 a decrease in the number of and ‘Canadians has taken place, to the extent of 104 families, The increase in native or balf-breed families during the mame period was 132, From 1843 to 1848 the native in Grease was 113 families, the rate being about the samo Be in the succeeding period; but in the six years ending European an ‘and Canadian element increased also, to the extent of 97 families. Those two periods divided by 1849 have an entirely citerent. _pocia! phares: the firat es was one of a Ctvilization—the iat 1849.'66) one of retrograde Movement, the diminution in the number of Euro) settlers having operated adversely on the habits and a toms of the half-breeds. The tendency of the native lation tndeed is. gradually to throw of the humani ca of civilization and approach nearer and nearer to the gavage wildness of Indian life. The influx of European and Can- sdlan blood between 1643 and 1449 had ads good effect 2 arresting this tendency, than disposition, have Wihuved 8 and fostered. ered the ‘refining fining element is now iost. The loss of Europeans and Canadians is accounted chiefly by the movements of the people; first reactant Portage, and secondly to St. Josoph’s, at Turtle Mountain two new and Sarat ning es settlements, Many families have int 1849 ete lati he _ foreign. pulation and~ house ac- rn had attained hele maximum, In 1843, before influx nee add and in 1866, after the efflux of the emigrant tide, house accommodation was'at its minimam. Thus, in 1849 we flud only five persons to each dwelling, while in 1843 and 1856 there were six persone to each. This very extraordinary Minh ate 3) Bo fer ag it relates to 1849 and 1856, ia etated by M Swith, vader whose direction the pensus of the latter year war taken, to have arigon “from the general de Preveal circumstances im which many fumbles found Numbera Jon 24.—There were no less than twenty-two cases on ‘the calendar to-day, some of which were postponed for ‘trial till the next term, Mary Brown, charged with stealing $40 worth of pro. perty from Rosanna Emmerton, 217 avenue B, on the 10th of May, pleaded guilty to petit larceny, and was sent to the Penitentiary for eight days. ‘Wm.
