John Letcher on one side, and the galvanized car- casa Of whiggery and the rump of Koow Nothingiain united under the banner of Wa. L. Goggin, oa the other, No convesa has ever been more animated, and uous has ever vrought out a greater display of stump oratory thau tho one which wil! close with the going down of the sun to-day. Bitterness of feeling, personalities, charges of dishontsty, crimination and recrimination, have been en- gendered aud bandied and thrust before tho public, to aa extent, we venture to say, before vnkuown in the political bistory of the first families of the old mother of Presidents and etatesmes. Two ducis at least have grown out of the weaknees displayed by some of the party leacers, in one of which a prominent can:li- date for Congress hag been made a cripple for life. We should think that the people of Virginia would rejoice at the approaching end of this political turmoil and squabble, which has kept them for nearly three months in a state of continua! exciiement, What the result of this election wul be, further than the almost certain success of the democratic State ticket, we cannot easily foretell. Tne opyesition are bold ami wel! organized, and are sanguine that they are capable of lessening the usual democratic mrjority in the State very materially. On the other hand, white the democracy are seemingly united, there is one branch of them who are not as enthusiastic as they were four years ago, when Governor Wiss was elected over his Know Nothing competitor, Mr. Flournoy, by over ten thousand majority. Some of the Congressional districts are decidedly in doubt, and ove or two opposition representatives may slip in between the divisions of the democracy. For a number of years back the delegation in Congrees from Virginia bas been a unit in political senti meat, but now there is # provpect of this long tle usage being brokem up. Tue Srreet Pavemants.—Now that the work of siree cloaning bas been fairiy got under way, another matter, not remotely connected with it, needs considerable atten- tion. It is the condition of the street pavements. By tho mended charter of 1867 the paving, repaving and repair- ing streets was taken from the Street Commissioner’s De- partment and transferred to the Croton Aqueduct Depart- ment, and by them entrusted to tho “Water Puryeyor.”” The Superintendeat of Sanitary Inspection says, and very reasonably, too, that it is impossible to get the streets of New York thoroughly clean until the pavements in many of our streets are put in proper repair, It needz no argu, ment here to show that mapy of our principal streets are gsdly ont of repair, and instead of the “patching” process adopted by the Croton Aqueduct Board in selecting spots here and there and repaving them, it would be cheaper in the end to give those localities needing it a thorough epaving. AU the present time Washington, Weet and cenwich streets, on the North river side of the city, from # point near Canal street, aud Pearl, Water, Frout and South streets, on the East river eide, localities in which our principal merchants transact their business, are at present wboliy unilt for travel, owing tothe uaeven- bess of the pavements, over which it'is almost impossibie for ‘onded carts to pass over. A tour of inspection throagh the localities above designated will eatisfy any person who may be skeptical as to facts herein stated.
