In order to convey to the reader. who may desire to follow the movements of the hostile fortes now confronting each other on the banks of the Po, a comprehensiae idea of the theatre of contlict, we give the following general topo- graphical deseription, which we borrow from Galignani’s Messenger: If Alessandrit—whieh was dismantled by the Austrians in 1833, when they gave it up to Piedmont, bat which has recently been forti- tied—were made the basis of operations of an iovading army against Milan, the army would hove two routes to follow: The first, in which there are a number of torrents, up to the Tici- ne. which separates Lombardy from Piedmont; sud the second, the easier one. presenting an obstacle in the Po. whieh is the southern limit ot Lombarde-Venitia. Now, Austria, which « Piacenza, on the right bank of that river. bas established an intrenched camp at that place Lower down are Cremona, and on the left bank Mantua, to defend the passage against an army which should leave Piacenza On the first road to Milan, behind is Pavia, which seems to have been r fied. in order to be made a base of operations against Alessandria, if besieged. Ou the north are Bergamo and Brescia—atrong places, but not impregnable, and able to dis- quiet an army passing them to attack Verona and Mantua. which are the key of the country. This territory was the theatre of the ca: i, oft and Austria has accumulated de: there, in the belief that ina future war the same plan of attack would be fullowed; but that is perhaps doubtful. The Adige is in the rear, and flows parallel to the Po for acertain dis- tance. It is perpendicular to it behind the Lake of Gardo trom Verona to Legrano—a length of fifteen leagues. It can nowhere be forded, and its banks. on the side of Verona. are covered with gardens and vineyards, and these on the side of Mantua with rice fields and marshes. The read from Verona to Le- gtano runs between the Adige and a canal; and an army placed within the square formed biera, Mantua, Verona, and Legrano, ted by the water which is found on the and west. by mountains to the north, and © the south, is free in its movements. aarch on any point that may be men- chiera, of which the defences are somewhat scattered. is the refuge of the flotilla which, acting on the Lake of Gardo, would Lire lesiring to crosa the Mineiv, and protects the locks which enable the banks of the lower part of the river to be inundated. By an inundation the tying bridges construeted by the enemy would be carried Mantua is, like Peschiera. on an island in the Mineio, surrounded by a lake. which should be drained in order to allow the town to be taken, and draining would leave a pesti- lential marsh which would render the place uninhabitable.
