Monpay, May 23—6 P. M. The Bank statement of this day compares as follows with tao statoment of tho previous week :— Week ending Loans. May 1 $120,680,408 26, ww 26,090,008 “p16 073 Circulation. Deposits. 8,190,933 88,896,639 8/52,723 $8,654,130 978,965 138,216 142,509 This statement must be considered satisfactory. The Gain of specie, though generally anticipated, is none the less gratifying, as it will tend to strengthen the bearts of fome whom the recent heavy specie shipments were alarraing. At tbe eame time, it is but right that the pub: lic should know that, as the specie shipment of Saturday Was not inciuded in the above average, the amount ac- tually held by the banks at present is probably mot much over $24,000,009. This will be further reduced by the Persia's shipment on Wednesday ; so that itis but reason- able to expect that the next spocie average will show a beavy decline. The amounts coming in from the country, and the two millions ou the way from California will, in tho ensuing week, help to restore the banks to their receat condition. Meanwhile the reduction of discounts, of which the above return affords substantial evidence, Indicates a wise resolution on the pari of bank officers to avoid even ‘the sembiance of danger. It is not likely that for the pre- sent the relations between the geverament and the banks will make any change in tho state of either, except that the former will pay more for loans. ‘The banks are think- ing of demanding the gold for their overdue Treasury notes; while at the same moment Mr. Ovdb is negotiating to places new batch. It eeoms to be supposed that several mitlions could be placed on the market at five per cent. The de- cline in the Treasury balance hows the accessity of prompt action on the part of the Department. The money market continues feverish, though no advance in rater can be fairly quoted. Call loans are offered at bank at 6,and by private lenders at 6; the supply of money secking employment in this way is ip excess of the demand. There is no change in the rater of paper, though long paper is more difficult to sell than it has been. Several habitual purchasers of mercantile paper have withdrawn from the market, deeming {t pru- dent to leave their money idle for the presont, and watch evonts. Exchange is steady at 110 a 3 for baukers’ sixty day sterling bills, the leading drawer acking 110; and 110% a 5% for eight bills, The business coing for the Persia is moderate. From present appearances that verge! will take out from two millions to two millions and A quarter, and the Arago op Saturday perhaps a million anda balf. Tbe business of shipping specie to Eurepe is being overdene; letters by the City of Baltimore state that the demand for gold for the Continent has subsided, and that the British consignees of the gold whipped from hence wili be obliged to sell tothe Bank. Sinco then we have shipped over eight millions, and this week we may ship four more, At this rate we may expect to see gold coming to this country from Europe in the fall. Thie has been an extremely dull day in the stock mar- ket; tho business at the board bas been considerably smaller than usual. The most active stocks continue to be Central and Rock Island. The former was unfavorably affected by an unofficial report of the April oarnings, which shows a falling off, as compared with last April, equal to $225,000. The stock opened at 71%, a decline of 34 por cent. Ttwasthen done as low as 7134, but was betior afterward; in the afternoon it wold at 723{, and closed at 12 bid. Competition does not appear, thus far, to have worked very favorably for the Central; peaple are offer- ing to sell the August dividend at three per cent, aad even lees. Many friends of the property express loud com- plaints of Mr. Richmond's polioy. Rook Island continues steady, without effort on the part of the buyers. A; much as 2} a3 per cent is paid for sellers’ options. A’ this rate the few holders in this market can doa very Pretty business at the costof the jobbers. The May earn- ings are said to be up to the expectations of the managers; no one doubts that dividenis will be shortly resumed. The stock closed today at 6214 bid. There was a emall movement in the Michigan share: to-day, predicated, in all probability, on the late arrange ment by which the fares have been raised. The guaran teed was steady atS2 in the morning, closing at 323, bid the Central opened at 4134, advanced to 42, and closed a % bid. Theso stosks will be good property this fail ma and Toledo were steady. Pacific Mail was lower. ‘The business in State stocks and bonds was unusually light: in prices there was no materia! change. We note a sale of government 5’s at an advance of 4 per cent, ‘and a salo of Michigan Central 8’s at 90, a considera- Die decline.
