SS THE LONDON TIMES ON THE SICKLES VERDICT. [From the London Times, May 11.) After lasting for a fabulous number of days the trial of Mr. Sickles, like every other huma: contest, agony or exhibition, has come to a eclusion The verdict has been, as every- y winst have expected it would be, one of acquittal. We are far from asserting that such ne lusion was not borne out by the evidence. { Mr. Sickles aeted under the influence of exceedingly violent provocation there ean be nv doubt, and most likely the strict Ietter of he law would not have justified a severer ver- than that of manslaughter. But it seems * # strong measure to find that a man . before the homicide that he committed, wasot perfeetly sound mind. and who appeared before the jary in a most unquestionable state vt sanity, committed thrt homicide under the influe| madness. It looks as if the crime hei been made the proof of the madness which excused it. Be this as it may, we are not tt to msinuate any censure on the verdict of the American jury, because we are very much inclined to believe that a jury of our own countrymen would have arrived at a similar conelusi If we wish to eliminate the doc- trine of “Served him right” from the decisions «f courts of justice, we must devise some tri- buna! less open to popular influences and pre- m-lices than that palladium and pride of our Tiveretes, « British jury. But, while we freely admit that the conclusion was one at which, however contrary to law it may be, any twelve ordinary men were almost certain to arrive, we must say that the whole circumstances at- tending and following tae verdict of acquittal, the license allowed to the bar and to the an- dience. and the demonstrations of popular epinion which followed, are not caleulated to Sauer free institutions in public estimation. We cannot forget that though Mr. Sickles y have many claims on the compassionate ces of all who justly estimate the weak- f human nature, be is not an example to lowed, not a hero tobe admired, but a uided man. who washed out a grievous of- e in the blood of his enemy, siain in the pen day in the publie street, without the pos- sthility defending himself, and with every circumstance that could show a fixed and fero- cious determination. Casuists may differ as to the precise amount of guilt, romancers may deck oat the crime with the attributes of hero- ut sober reason must still regard the act us deeply censurable, if not highly criminal, esults as a misfortune to its perpetra- ly inferior te that which he inflicted m This being so, we confess we are sorry to hear that the verdict of “Not Guilty” was received witiy a ‘loud. wild. thrilling, tumultuous hur rah’ from the speetators.with cheer after cheer, the waving of handkerchiefs, and a general rush towards the dock. The audience believed, no cloubt, that they were making a vigorous pro- test against adultery; but it may also be ques- tioned whether they were not. in their zeal for the seventh commandment, lending their ap- rituse to the impunity that waited on a bench wf the sixth. The Marshal and the Jwige seemed to have been alike unable to arrest the tumult. Mr. Stanton. one of the prisuner’s counsel, moved for bis discharge before the verdict was recorded, and, in the name of Mr Sickles and of his counsel. returned thanks to the jury. We certainly remember to have sead, in the reports of the infamous trials of persons accused of the Popish Plot. that judges were in the habit of telling juriestha t wy hal vcted as good subjects and’ Protestants, when, om the dence of Oates or Bedloe, they sent sme unfortunate gentleman to the halter or tu blo utwe never before heard of the a prisoner thanking the jury. on nis client aud himself. for their ver- ‘ as if they were electors at a polling booth Lf that verdict was just. the jurers were en- titled to no other applause for the discharge of their duty than that of their own consciences; if unjust, they were entitled to the reprobativi alt good men. In ne case could the idea of val obligation from the prisoner to the be entertained: the very notion of such a Was in itself an insult. ittle, however, cared *- the stentorian Stan- ton” for these things. Turning from the jury he addressed the crowd in a very pithy piece of forensic eloquence. “ Now go it,” said the barrister. and the enthusiastic crowd ~ went in” dingly with another peal of shouts. Mr. Sickles was kissed by his friend Captain Wiley. and overwhelmed with congratulations, as he had achieyed some exploit more than or- dinarily glorious. On his slow but triumphant pessage towards the door. he had to pass by the jury-Lox; the jury expressed a wish to con- gratulate him; he stepped over-the forms to meet them, and their salutations were heartily temlered. Then the counsel for the defence exchanged compliments and congratulations with the jury. Qn emerging from the cvart Mr. Sickles was weleomed with fresh volley of cheers from the crowd. Of course he was tmmediately called upon for a speeeh, but by this time he was so much exhausted by the ex- cess of popular enthusiasm that he was unable to comply. A desperate effort was made to take out the horses and to draw him home in triumph. We cannot prevail upon ourselves te on this well-meant attempt was un- suceessfal The house in which Mr. Sickles was deposit- ed was -urrounded by thousands of people, and so much did this ovation appear to be to the tiste of 1s principal object that Mr. Sickles in- tends to remain in Washington for a week. The counsel who defended him received the compliment of a serenade, and as they, on be- half of Mr. Sickles, declined the honor for him, pebhe enthusiasm could find no viher veut than serenading the jury. Thea we have the sayings and doings of the jury; bow they came to Mr. Erady’s parlor at the National, and condescended to unbend on the subject of th verdict. Mr. McDermott spoke of his devut to the family altar. Mr. Knight brought h fiddle with him, with which he had solaced the long night: eclusion which the jury hail to pass. and played several airs tw the audience mm Mr. Brady's parlor. Mr. Arnoid, the fore- man, hopes that his latest posterity will honor his memory for ing served on that jury < ag aod mimie among the Sickles that had Mrs. m. he would have ‘wrought not merely a pis:ol but a howitzer to bear on the seducer.
