Through the gene- rosity of sympathizing friends, they were aie to obtain a suitable location for such penitent femaics as might desire to retrace their steps and return to a virtuous life. Op the Ist of April, 1836, the present chaplain (Rev. Mr. Darlipg) entered upon his duties, assisted by the counsel and co operation of some of nature’s noble women. TYMRTY-PIMST ANNIVERSARY, ; The thirty frst anniversary of the American Seamon’e Friend Society was held last ovening at the Presbyterian church (Rev. Asa D. Smith, D.D.), corner of Fourteenth: street and Second avenue, William A. Booth, Esq., (Proat- deat of the society,) in the chair. From the publications of the socicty wo abstract the following brief statement of the history, results and pre sent condition of the efforts for the moral improvement ef seamen :—In England the first organized efforts for the spiritual improvement of seamen date from the year 1779, which led to the establishment in 1780 of the Bible Society, the first society ever formed for the express and sole purpose of circulating the Bible. This society, im 1804, changed its name to the Naval and Military Bible Society, in consequence of the organization of the Bei- tish and Foreign Bibi Society that year. During the frst sixty years of its existence it distributed about 360,008 copies of the Scriptures. The frst prayer meetings on shipboard were held im 1814, the frst movement to thatend being mado by a shoemaker name Zebulon Rogers, the soa of a coal mea- surer employed on board the colliers in the Thames. The firet meeting was held on the brig Friendship, with whoee captain (Simpeov) Mr. Rogers became acquainted ata Wesleyan Methodist chapel. Being invited by the captain to goon board, Rogers asked permission, which ‘was readily granted, to hoid prayer mectings in the cabim of the brig. Meetings were afterwards held on board other veseels, a lantern being Grst used, and afterwards a flag, with the word “Bethel” in tbe centre, to apprise the crews in the river upon what ship the meeting was tobe beld. In 1817 Rev. Geo, C. Smith, a aches cler- gyman, attended one of these meetings, and became s> interested in them tbat he determined to devote his at- tention in the future to furtherivg the work thus begua, and in 1818 a sb)p was purchased, to be used as a floating “Bethel”? exciusively. Io America, in 1812, a ay was formed in rae, called “The Boston Society, for the he religious and iw@provement of seamen.” war with Great Britain caused the society fi — operations for the time. Im 1816 Rev. Ward Su ag a wies'onary among the poor of tho project of érecting a church for the use of the mari- pers in this city. Onthe 14th of March, oat the Ma- rime Bible Society of New York was formed, but fioally merged in the New York Bible Society. The jobaieay oe the first Mariner's church ever erected was laid October 4, 1819, in Roosevelt street, and it was dedicated June 4, 1820. ‘Toe Rev. Mr. Stafford was the first preacher. Rev Jobn Truair was pastor of the Mariners’ church for churches. ‘Tho Teport furthes stetes that all the good that they have desired has not becn accomplisued; but if ony of the erring ones have been rectaimad, we can but nk Providence for being instruments in go good a work. There are many different grades of crime, and the subjects require different ment, There are veterans in vice, and there are novices—there are thore who have long trodden the patns of vice, and there are those who bave but little experi- ence, whose minds may be easily influenced; and to clas- sify these requires facilities which are bot possessed by us Dow, and will not be until God’s stewarde shall impart generous portion of their substance, and assist us to carry out this noble work. As fallen and jatelligent crea- fares, this class of females certainly have the sympstoy thé Denevurent, amd humanity cemaods, if the meavs a icone be possible, that methine, ve done to reacue end save them. The monthly records of thia society for Ube last year show that it bas been a year of usefulness aud success, less insn one bundred and fifty-two of this vnfortopate ciass have been shielded from the seduc- tive influences of vicious compsuions. Twenty five of these bave found employment, fourtoen have voluntarily Withdrawn, five expolied, thirteen travaferred to the hos- Pital, and twenty-six, it ig feared, have returned to their sinful ways. ‘Tke internal operations of this institution, under the su- pervsion ef the principal matron, Mre. ‘McClane, have been considerably enlarged and improved during the last year. Moral and religious instructions have been regu larly held, The almahouse, the hospita! and the peniten- tary have oceationally been visited, and from those insti- tutions we have received many who would have probably retarned to yice bad not this refuge been offered. The tumber of inmates the last year hus exceeded that of spy other year, and the manifested demand for the hospitality offered for this class of females hag render- eq it necessary for an enlargement of tae building, which bas been accomplighed, but has incurred an indebtedness which we are compelied to appeal to the public for agsiat- ance to remove. A large portion of the report was taken up in describ- ing the conversion and the influence of the Gospel upon the inmates ip this institution, going “ito a minute de- eeription of tho causes of conversion and giving copies of jeiters from thore who had once been inmates and are ow enjoying a happy and prosperous lite; also letters from these who bad friends there. The report closed with an appeal for the earnest prayers of tho righteous, and for the pecuniary means neceseary to carry on their good work—and they would do valiantly, yea, gather precious Jewels for the Saviour’s crown. ‘The jost shall be found, the dead shail live."? The report was followed by an address by Rev. Me. Padcoek. The speaker dwelt at length upon the general impreseion and sentiment throughout the world, that when woman fell from the path of virtue there was nore- claiming her. He knew that the majority of ner own sex inevead of assiating berto reclaim the lust step, would do all that they could to push her down the brink. But that woman when she bad taken the falee step could not be re claimed be denied. Place around her protection and shield ber from temptation and she yet will be added to the ornaments of society. Let the world doas much to lift ber outof the mire as they now do-to push her deeper in, and we should see mapy who lead an abandoned life walking in the path of virtue. The success that this institution had met with in itsquietand secluded way convinced him that the sufferings of many could be re- leved were the proper efforts mae. At the close of this address Professor Waters sung a favorite hymn, which was followed by an address by the Rev. Mr. Wykorr—subject: ‘The influence of the Gospel to reclaim sinners.” The speaker thought that we were ussembled here today on one of the most solema occa- sions that can vecali, protest ant or Christian assem. bhes. It isto benefit, protect and save that sex from whom our virtues are, and our vices may be derived; that sex which was given to man as the last and dearest token of creative goodness; that sex whose represonta- tive was the last to the cross and the first to the sopal- chre. Togend the Gospel to them that sit in the region apd ehadow of death is an apostolic work, in favor of which every Christian lifts up his voice and cries “God speed the cause. But our ocd has enjoyed no such wige commendation, no such patronage, acd yet we are going to claim that it is as noble and Christ liko as the chief of them. Where is there a bosom that does not feel ard yearn over the degradation of woman? Such is the sympathy on her ‘that wo cannot bear to tee a woman executed for staining ber hands in the blood of her husband. A multitude of men, aad not a few wo- man, have endeavored to interpose for one sinful sister and persuade the Governor to commute the penalty of tbe law; the voice of humanity cries “spare the woman.” It eeems to us that if there is any crime for which we thall give to woman our deepest pity it is that crime for the prevention and diminution of which this blessed as- sociation is formed. It is strange that tender Loner woman could imbue Ser hands in blood; it is strany she should indulge in drunkenness, but {t ia still phew thatshe sbould throw away her ornament of defence. Now, it is not at al} wonderful that such minds should be void of reflection; those unhappy ones rush like the sheep to the 8 they hear and follow the voice of a stranger; poor lambs of the human flock, tho; taken and Nacnieed, before they are aware. Yet still, cannot deny that depravity of human nature must ‘uniter lie and give favor to ignorance and inexperience, and it ig not necessary to say that the victims of incontinence are more depraved ‘the generality of mankind; let them feel that there was pity in woman’s breast for them, and scores could be reciaimed. Atam adjourned meeting held January 11, 1826, a constitatic was adopted and officers were choseu. It was not, how- ever, until 1628 that the society became permanently es- tablisbed in tue form in which it now exists. In November, 1838, a second similar house was opened in James slip.
