— Academy of Muste—VFarewell Engugement of Mule. Piccolomini. ‘The Academy was reopened last night for tho soiries Wadieux of Mile. Piccolowin , wh) will shortly depart for Europe to resume her carcor which was interrupted by ber very brillant American engagement. The per- formances commence’ jast night under the direction of ‘Mr. Strakoech, all of whose artists are deservedly favorites with the metropolitan public. So the season was begun under very favorable auspices, and from the indications Of last night tt wil! be exceedingly profitable to the manager as well as agreouble to the public. That Mile, Piccolomini still retains her bold upon the public heart was proven by the liberal way in which the public answered rather a strong appeal to its pocket. The Price of places was somo »hat highor than usual—though not higher than for Piccolomini’s first appearances here— but atill the Academy was thronged at an early hour with ‘an audience at once popular, fashionable and critical. And this crowned houge came not so much to hear the Traviata,’ which bas been somewhat worn by frequoat repetition, as to sec the fascinating prima donna, woo is 6 the public what the magnet is to the stool. sito looked gly; evidently the provincial air agrees with ber. There was more than the usual witchery in ber es and roguishnces in her smile. She placed horself on 6 best of terms with the audionce (which gave her a cordial greeting), and gave to Violetia all the spirit and ‘meaning of the composer, So well known is Mile. Picco Jomini in this 74le that criticism at this aay would not b after the manner of news, and we shall, therefore, do no more than to reaflirm all the good things that have been paid of her before. Her singing of the “Brindisi” aud “Cava tina’ of the first act, the duet with Germant in tne second, ¢ Gran Dio in the Inet, was enthusiastically up: 3 ed, and she was frequemtiy recalled before the cur- ain. Brignoli, the Alfredo of the evening, was war re- ceived, but was hardly in as good voice as usual. ge ood dio's noble voice was heard to the finest advantage in Germont-a réle in which ho bas no rival on this side the Atlantic. The orchestra, conducted by Muzio, superb, and the performauce altogether an admirable on Friday Piccolomini wilising in the ‘‘Elisir d’Amore,”’ in which she s most excellent; and on Saturday (matinée) in “Lucia di Lammermoor” and “La Serva Padrona.” ‘The ladies who crowded the Academy at the former Pic- colomini matinées will be sure to get up a repetition of the furore. ‘Tne Funerat or Bisnor Doane—Tue New York Rerort- ¥8x3,—We have received a note from Burlington, N. J., tn regard to the trentment a New York reporter received at the funeral of the late Bisbop Doane. It appears that ono Of these indefatigable chaps made himself very ridiculous ‘and obnoxious, and exhibiting none of the gentlomanly traita that should always characterize the conduct of re- porters at home and abroad. We do not kaow the name of the individual alluded to, but from what we have heard, and from tho instincts of the two, he is probably &n attaché of the Hazpress. We do not see how he could belong to any other establisument. People living in the rural districts will baye to discriminate when reporters for the the city newspaper pross visilthem. Our re- porter behaved ina gentlemanly manner, and was well treated by the c'ergy and laity present on that occasion, City Intelligence, Evoiveme’s Taian Tre or Tar Russian Steam FRicate GrxgRal, ADMIRAL.—This noble vesgel left her dock at the Noveity Works, foot of ‘Ivelfth street, East river, yester- day morning, and proceeded on an engineer’s trial trip down the bay. Nobody was allowed on board except those pereons immediately engaged in her construction, She proceeded down the Esst river with ber engine work- ing satisfactorily, but owing to her gigantic size, and to pore accidents, she was aided by several steam- 8 vo keep ber in the channel. As she down the bay she passed several of our largest Liverpool packets, and they looked like more pigmics in comparison with her. As soon as she got an oiling from Governor’s Ieland the steamtugs cast off their Nines and the leviatban steamed down the bay in beautiful style. It is understood that before the weveral Admiral leaves for Europe, a trial trip will be made, 6p which occasion a large number of men versed in naval architecture will be invited. She returned to town in the afternoonend anchored off the Battery. The trip was quite satisfactory. Tux New Law Insitrure was opened yesterday at three o'clock, in a splendid recom at the rear of the Federal Courts (already described some days since in the Henatp.) Judge E¢monds delivered an appropriate address review- ing the progreee of the institution. Mratany—Insrection or om Ricnr Wisc oF THE Exavant Reoowent.—The right wing of the Eleventh regiment (Washington Rifles), Colonel Homer Bostwick will be inspected on Monday next, at three o’clook P.M., ‘et the Division Armory at the corner of Elm and White streets. The object of the iaspection is to see how far the mombers of the regiment have complied with the new bill of drees prescribed by general orders from head- quarters. The left wing will be inapected at the same Place on Tuesaay the 10th inst. Steamer Thomas Powe. has been withdrawa from the cally route between New York and Rondout for a few days. ‘Tue New Seats Ansenat.—The officers charged as ex officio Cormmisstoners for building and repairing arsenals and armories, have concluded to reconstruct the arsenal on Seventh averne, which tumbled down last year. The late Legislature appropriated $20,000 to complete the work, Coroners’ Inquests Yesterday. Scictoe—Tax Resvrt or Woman's Inconstancy.—Coroner Schirmer was called upon yesterday to hold an inquest at No. 18 Reade street, upon the body of a German named Jobann Schmidt, who commitied cuicide by taking lauds num, The somewhat melancholy circumstances are (as follows:—Schmidt had been deserted by his wife some two months previously, which preyed upon his m' to such an extent that be abandoned his busi: sought to drown his grief in the wine oup. St of the loved ome haunted him day an! nigh Dut little roliet could be afforded him. A tow ago he learned that his wife was leading the lity of a titute in Baxter street. Tho shock completely prostre bim, despair took possession of his soul, aud nought mained but death to come and relieve him of his misery. Intent on committing suicide, he purchased half an ounce of laudanum at a drug store in the immediate neighbor- hood, and after writing a letter explanatory ot his conduct, he partook of the poison, andin a few hours afterwards his spirit winged its flight toanother world. The letter in question was found in a Bible and directed to one of his friends, He attributed all his misfortunes to the incon- stancy of his wife, and declared that he could not live and know that she was an inmate ofa house of ill-famo. To be deserted by her who had sworn “to love, honor and obey” him, was a sad blow, but to know that she was associated with the lowest of ber sex in 2 bouse of prosti- tution, drove him to madness. There was no alternative in his opinion but to commit suicide or kili bis wife. He Movie the former course, and ended his career as al- ready narrated. Fatat Fatt.—Michael Goodwin, a laborer, ded at the New York Hoepital yesterday from the effects of in- juries accidentally received by falling from a jaidor erected at the building No. 196 Spring street. Deceased was ascending with a hod of mortar on his back, when he missed b's footing and fell to ihe sidewalk beneath, « dis- tance of over thirty feet, recelving such severe injuries as to cause bis death, Coroner Schirmer held an inquest upon the body of «eceased. Burne 10 Deava,—Coroner Schirmer held an inquest on Wedresday upon the body of a child two years old, named Mary E. Burcball, whose parents reside at No. 18 Cherry street, who dicd from the effects of burns. The child, it appears, while «ione in a room, got some matches, and while playing with them sat fire ‘to her clothes and was fatally burned before the flames could be extin- juished. The jury rendered a verdict of ‘death from Bons accidentally received.” Fatat Venice Casvatty.—An inquest was also held yesterday upon the body of aman named William Ran- dall, a porter atthe St. Nicholas Hotel, who was acci- dentally killed on Tucetay night by being thrown from ‘one of the coaches of that establishment. Verdict, “Ac- cidental death.” The Crops in Wisconsin. {From the Madison Patriot, April 28. ] Daring a few days runin the country wo have taken Bome paivs toexamino into the condition and prospects of the coming crops, particularly of wheat. The winter wheat, which one month ago promised as fairly as it ever did at that season, has, by recent excecdingly cold and unfavorable weather, been almost entirely destroyed; the only exception beirg small patches, protected on all sides by forests. From what we have seen we should judge that it would not be safo to calculate upon more than one- ‘fifth of-the usual crop of whee wheat through the Siate, ‘and probably much less. This loss may in some measure be supplied by oate and corn, as many of tho farmors are ploughing up their wheat flelds for that purpose, but the backward spring will prevent the planting of @s much as would under more favorable cir- cumstances; and tho loss to the farmers, in addi- tion to the’ partial failure of last yoar’s crop, will fall ‘with orushing weight upon many who have ventured into expenses and debts beyond their means during tho period of ‘ity immediately preceding the commeroial and agricultural failure, and musi be a very congiderable loss to the material wealth of the State. To those who have observed the sign of the seagons in this country, there is some encouragement in the fact that invariably, here » & cold end unpropituons epring has been followed by & warm, genial gunmor, which has matured, in the greatest perfection, those crops which the weather bas permitted the farmers to plant, Tac corn + Crop, with us, has never been an utter failure, and may be planted with a roazonable prospect of euccess after the time for planting all other grain has pasaod, ‘We have often wondered that a crop so certain as Corn, which yields so much more abundantly than other grains and which uniformly bears a better price in ce tothe cost of raising than any other, shonid vo been 60 much neglected a8 it has been hereiofore. Last season, when wheat failod, the corn crop was un- usually abundant, and the price of the product to tho acre has been double that of the best crop of wheal, Both corn and wheat now command 2 good price in the market, and there ia less of the old crop on band iu this Btate than at any time since we began to produce a sur- ples for ex; on. The prospect is that there prices ‘will continue to Meg in view of the contemplated European war, which will not, probabiy, tn any event, be settlod before the forthcoming crop tad sposed of, Our advice to the farmer is, to plant corn abua- dantly, and not to attempt t> fore a wheat eror fn enDror:Nour Fearon. or) with all the weKe eu any bone Ory Uae Lovo 04 the state of Delaware to sup wiborfged bythe wre this Srawng of ae Lotions for tua boueh of une do bereby ce: ‘that the ik the numbers w! were ‘ble day drawn trom the wheel, vis: ‘The subteribers, Commise! the d: of the Sparta Academy Shi ibe follwing are the siunbere from the wheel, 57, 17, 73, 60, 3, 53, 25, 20, 11, 72, 42, 28, ¢ 4, 1808. clocks, flowers, &c , &0., order. i mothers’ true friends. A recent traveller who has just come cyer the roads from Iowa to this city reports that the crops never looked so well, and that farmers will yery ehortly decide to send forward the grain which they have been holding for higher prices. NEW YORK CATTLE MARKET. Weonespar, May 4, 1859. BEEF CATTLE. The demand for beef cattle of every description was more active to-day at all the yards, aud holders succeeded in recovering the decline conceded last week, though there was no improvement in the average quality. Tho receipts wero much lighter though, which accounts for the advanced pretensions of brokers. The offerings, taken as an average, were only fairish; but there were spricklings of very fine steers in the yards, some of which were still-fed. The demand for them was equally active as for the more substantial grags-fed steers from Ohio, Tiinois and the other Weetern States, which con- tributed to the supply at the Washington drove yard, as also at the other city yards and at Bergen Hill, at which place the sales on Monday reached about 200 head, at prices within our range of prices annexed, The loss which speculators experienced last week scemed to im- part fresh energy to them this week—for the bulk of the offerings were in their bands—and they were jubi- int over their good fortune, having obtained high prices doring the three days and cleared most of the pens at good round profit, which fully compensated for tne lose they sustained during the previous week. Thore prevailed a good inquiry during the early hours, which con\aued throughout the entire day, holders being full as tirm at the close ag at any other time, es ranged froz ¢¢. to 19., witha few Bales at higher rates, and the aycrage was about 10%c. There were but few sales a a3 low ns Qc., and those only for inferior.
