~—_——_ FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sunpay, May 1—6 P. M. Business is quiet, and merchants are speculating as to @e amount o’ the fall trade, which will depend on the prospects of the crops; thus far, they promise so well ‘hat, notwithstanding the heavy spring importations, mer- chants are encouraged to order freely. Nothing, however, ‘will be decided for three weeks or a month yet. The im- portation of dry goods for last week was less than the im- portation of the corresponding week of 1857 (during the game week cf 1858 the receipt of dry goods was merely netinal); the total importation to date since Jan, 1 is lightly in excess of 1857, but the Importation for the tis- eal year to date—ten months—is $7,300,000 below that of ‘the same period of the fiscal year 1866-'7. The demand haz slackened, 8 usual at this season; prices, however, are steady. General merchandise con Binues to arrive and to pay fair profits to the tmporter. Teas continue to advance, At the auction sale on Friday there was a very lively competition, and higher prices were obtained for all descriptions, Coffee fe rm. Sugar was heavy at the beginning of the week, ‘and holders were compelled to make concessions to meet he views of buyers; but the decline gave rige to an active speculative demand, and prices closed firm. Wools have Deen active, and prices are maintained at the quota™ ttons of the late auction sale. Hides are depreesed, and lore dull; the stock is the smallest we have had at this season for four years. Leather is tn fair demand. ‘The advices from Europe have depreseed the cotton mar- Ket; to effect sales, a decline of ¢c. must be submitted to. ‘The receipts at the ports continue to full off. Last week’s re- ‘seipts were only 48,000 bales, against 71,000 bales last year ‘and 27,000 bales in 1857; making the total reveipt to date wince January 1, 3,418,000 baler, against 2,655,000 bates to same date last year, and 2,734,000 bales to same date 1857. Our total export to date is 2,271,000 bales, agaiast 1,794,000 bales to same date 1858, and 1,830,000 bales to mame date 1857. May was a month of heavy receipts last year; it must be expocted that this year’s excess will be eongiderably reduced during the current month. ‘The war news bas imparted a better tone to the grain and flour market, and we quote flour 30c. a 40c. higher the barrel, and grain 3c. the bushel. The receipts from fhe West are very light, farmers holding back till the prospects of this year’s crop are settled. Ashes are in fair demand. ‘The following are the comparative Custom House tables ef the trade of the port for the past week and siuce January 1 :— . On the one hand the banks bave lost, by export, aboat $1,800,000, in eluding the shipments on Saturday, 2ith (yesterday's shipment will of course not tell against the average); on the other, they have received $1,723,252 from California, and a trifle from the Sub-Treasury. Some remittances of gold have been received from the interior, which may possibly swell the receipts above the disbursements. The Bub-Treasury balance stands $6,558,651 against $6,594,810 a8 the close of last weck: $200,000 having been sent to Washington. It scems likely that the banks may chow an fmcrease both in the deposit and discount lines. This is ‘the season at which the former accumulate; as to the lat- ter, the conservative character of tle last statement may, perhaps, have tempted some of the more speculative banks to yentere in an oprsite direction. Money is easier than it was at the close ot just week. Call loans are offered to the brokers at four per cent; but, owing to the small amount of basiness on the Stock Exchange, very little is placed even at this figure. Tuo banks continue to complain of a want of paper. Som2 strictly first class short pager was done last week at four, and we hear of other lines betog taken at 434. The rate, however, for first class sixty day paper is 5 per cont; for four a six months, Lower grades go at $ a 10, according to names and dates. Exelange on Europe con- tinues yery firm, The leading drawer put his rate up for the Fulton to 11034 ; the ordinary bankers’ rate was from 0 a 110%, with a moderate supply of mercantile bills at 10934 a {. France were from 5.10 a 5.12%. The movement in the stock market duriug the past ‘week was downward till Friday evening, when the cur- Tent of prices changed, and an improvement took place. The following table will show the decline and the recovery :— nal ew or Central ‘The depression was mainly caused by the succsnsful operations of the bears, aided by the ponding contest b»- ‘ween the four great roads to,the West and the small ‘watfic on the Western roads. To understand the moyvo- ments in such a tock as New York Central, for instanze, the public must be made aware that thero are overa hundred persons in Wall street who make their living by speculating almost exclusively in this etock. Thes> wpeculators are usually bears ;,in times of depression, when there are few purchases for outsiders, thoy ean often, if they bave apy basis to work upon, frighten holdora into selling their property, and thus «avec a decline in its market value. During the past month these persons laye been uniformly successful. The contest between the four roade—the reduction of Saree, which, though greatly exaggerated in the papers, has had a very prejudicial effeet on the public estimation of railway property—the war prozpects, and the sm ull re. ceipts of (he Western roade, which are owing partly to the poor crops Inst year, and partly to the unwillingness Of farmers to part with their grain at pregent prices un Ui the character of the new crop is determined—all these adverge circumstances have been used by the Wall street ‘@perators with cuch driven down in some im all instances to the which were current in tho height of the pani 1857—n time when no man conid tell all the banks in the country wound up and wiped oat of existe ar below, and alm uborhood of the figures pect abead, for merchants, railroads, and all kind: ‘business, was the most gloomy ever witnosged in thi country. It is true that Wall street could not have achieved this result bad it not been aided by pudiic d much of the existing diztrust is the fruit of the cxertioas of the Wall streeteoperators themedives, who have in vented some and exaggerated other unfavorable stories. And the public, it muet be remembered, is not—like the Wall strect operators—perpetually speculating. It has ite fits of speculation, which Inet for a greater or Jess pe- riod of time; after which, and until the fit returns, stocks are left to the mercy of Wall street. In former times, before tho crisis, when all was prosperous, and coni- dence prevaile public used to “come in” every few week#, to the periodical ruin and annihilation of the there has been but one instance of irs; that was in February, 8. The coneequensa of been a great increase Thongands of Dears. ince the crisi public intervention in st 1858, and only lasted afew da. this non appearance of the public of boldness among the street operators. sharea aro now soll dally by thought 2 ealo of two or three huadred tion a few years ago: bueines# is done on su when the goneral improvement now progr the etock exchange, the resuits will be vor the more imprudent operat railways cont vore amon, ebanncl. This year farmers are hold ing b dace they have, in the hope that a war or a poor Prospect mey improve prices; hence the contrast botwevn o rop April this year and April last shows very badly for tho cur- Tent year. But May, the railroad people expect, will do Detter; June will do better still; and unless we have a total faiture of the crop this fall the receipts will continue to increase throughout the yoar. It is believed, in fact, that we bave turned the corner. ‘Some enterprises aro doing very well even Row, Pana ma is doing an enormous business at very high rates, The business on the Hudson river is increasing, and nex: year, in all probability, there will be some money to di- vide among the shareholders, The coal companies are doing well, and Reading is firm, Pacific Mail, whose fail during the week has been the most marked feature of the Stock Exchange, is affected by the pending competition with Commodore Vanderbilt. By reference to an advertisement in another column it will be seen that on and after tke 20th July the North Star will take her place in Vanderbilt’s new California line as consort t» the Northern Light, the two forming a eemi-monthly lime, and leaving New York on the 5th and 20th of each moath. The North Star is now being fitted up to take her place in the line; she is being provided with four large new boilers from the Allaire Works. The fare, we understand, will again be reduced, and Californians, who haye so long complained of the exactions of the Pacific Mail Company, will now have their innings. The government is also to be a gainer by the competition. Vanderbilt's bid for the traneportation of the mails, we learn by telegraph from Washington, is only $287,000; the Paciflc Mail Company now receives $652,000 for the same service. The saving to the government will thas be $415,000. We mentioned the other day that tho referees in the controversy be tween Vanderbi!t and the company rendered a decision in his favor, and awarded bim $30,000. As there appears to besome diecrepancy between the various aceounts of the controversy, perhaps the correspondence which led to the reference bad better be made public. B looks ay though along and severe contest was at hand; as both parties will appeal to the public for sympathy, a knowledge of the facts from the etart may be desirable, CITY COMMERCIAL REPORT.
