2 American Ethnological Society. A special meeting of the ‘Evhnological Society was held at the house of Mr. F. @, Squier on Wednesday evening, tho 6th tvst., Mr. Folsom in tho chair, It was called with roference to a largo and interesting collection of an- tiquities recently" brought (rom Peru by Dr. Ferris, who has been for ten years @ resident in that country. They consist of a large number of vases, exhibiting various do- grees of skill, generally rude, but some of them really graceful in design and neat in execution. A fow wore ob- Viously modelied aftor indigenous fruits, and one or two after sea shells, fhe collection embraced also a variety of copper {nstrumeuts, or instruments mado of copper ‘with an alloy of tin, asmall percentage of which gives a considerable degree of hardness to the tool, suilicient for the ordinary purposes of cutting wood, leather, So. Most ‘of the cutting implements ure crescent shaped, like the Knives used by saddlers; but a few are veritable axes— not pierced like our own, but used as blacksmiths use their punches, by aid of a withe bound tightly in a groove which rung around them, Some objects in silver, repre- senting the sun and moon, or both in combination, att Particular attention, These, it is sald, were obtained among the ruins of Chimu, near Truxillo, a smal! Peruvian sea~ port near the frovtier of Keuator, Among these ruins, ‘what is called the Palaces cover a space of three-quarters: ofa uo. They are immense areas surrounded by high and strong walls, built of brick. These are now up- ‘wards of thirty feet high, twelve feet thick at their base, but diminishing to three feet at their tops. Within them are numerous Avacas, or tumuli, aud remains of innumo- rable edifices, rooms, halls, &c. These tumuli are sup- to have been tho some, oo soe of cording : wero buried hore, together with great amounts of trea- sure. The early Spaniards took from one of these mounds not less than 667,600 castellanos of gold, equal to about a million and a half of dollars. ‘The collection was referred to a committe of the society, consisting of Messre. Ewbank, Squier and Parker, with in- structions to report on its merits and importancc—it being understood that the collection would be deposited in the rooms of the Historical Society for public inspection. Mr. Squier laid before the society copies of a number of documents {llustrating the languages, &c., of the Iandians of Capada, from the papers of Sir Josoph Banks, p1 1m the British Museum. Also a nambor of original Mexi- can manuscripts, which he is publishing in conjunction with a French savant, in Paris. One of , which be- henora to Cortez, and bear® his autograph, is nearly thirty long, ved io Drilliant colors, on coarse paper ma- aie perce aborigines from the fibres of the maguey, or aloe. It is a syachronent — of ipeornin ped (Tepena- a) and Mexico, from the time of the arrival of the Nah- nau tribes in the plain of Anohuac down to their absorp- tion in the Mexican empire. It is as annals, every your being recorded, and is rendered additionally interesting from explanations and annotations in European characters but Mexican language, made by the Indian learned men ‘after the conquest. This manuscript is one of ten, all his- torical, which Mr. Squier is engaged in reproducing in fac simile, to be accompanied by a volume of text explanatory Of the aboriginal systems of recording events, aud of what re sometimes calied the “‘hicroglyphics’’ of Mexico and Central America. ‘ After the usual presentation of correspondence, the 80- cioty adjourned to the second Tuesday of April. Affairs in the Bahamas, OUR NASSAU CORRESPONDENCE. Nassav, N. P., Bahamas, April 14, 1369. ‘Tre Steamship Karnak and « Hint to Travellers—Pro- gress of the People—Interinsular Steam Communiva- tion—Town and Harbor Improvements—A New Hotel Compzny—Salubrity of the Climate—Rambles of a New Jersey Naturalist, de. ‘The Karnak arrived from Havana this morning, and, considering that all Americans are now wending their way northward, brings but few passengers en route, Why do your countrymen prefer going home fa an oyer- crowded California boat toa boat in which they would not be subject to so many desagrémens? It is because they get home quicker, despite the discomfort. If s0, Mr. Cunard must, for his own interest, put on a faster boat. She takes several passengers from this place for New York. Tho General Court meets next Tuesday, by or before which I suppose the Legislative session will be closed. ‘The bill for improving the town by carrying out the quays, &c., has passed; and to aid in raising fonds an ad- ditional tax of two and a half per cent on wrecked goods— an impost which .has created great murmurings among underwriters’ agents and their protégés. Judging from the proceedinga of the Bahama Legisla- ‘ture, now in eession, Naséau is likeiy to be a place of eome importance. Its growing prosperity is and will be on the- increage, and would be still more extensive if we had a Little of your American go ahead spirit infused into us. The Karnak steamer, plying between New York, this Port and Havana, has elevated our position; but wo are Hot content to remain idle, and the Legislature has printed a subsidy of $5,000 per annum, for not exceeding ive years, ‘steamer to run from Nassau to the seve- ral out islands of the government. Any person or com- pany is eligible to contract for the servize with the Gover- ‘Ror in council. There 1s a bill before the House for embellishing the town by carrying out the quays or wharves in a straight line, and to improve the harbor by dredging it. The bill also grants a monopoly for ten years to any individual or partners who will undertake ‘to orect or form a slip or dock for the repair of vessels damaged at sea, and ad- mits materials and machinery imported for the construc- tion of the same free of duty. A great many vessels are wrecked or stranded on our shores yearly, many come to port more or less damaged, and monapaliat, ia thie case, would doubtiess reap'a plentiful harvest, as with the advantages and facilities of such a slip or dock masters of vessels would Progr coming into our port, as could reach Nassau when they would be unable pany is on foot, = the prin- joint stock company, with limited liability, with a capital of $50,000. They have applied to the Legistature for an act of ration, and they will be guaranteed by tho country five per cent for ten years on the capital stock in- vested; but the bil! provides that should the company not be organized, or fail within a certain period to build or erect a hotel, the sum of $30,000 be placed at the diaposal of government for the purpose of building and furnishing one. Iam persuaded that our little city, having good accom- smodaticn for visiters, will be filled with them. I need not descant upon the salubrity of the climate; that Ihave often dove, and I am sure that the gentlemen and ladies who havo been with us for the past two months will readily and cheerfully testify to the truth of its balmy aod genial influence. Day by day you may see Judge C., of Hoboken, and his two daughters, rambling among the bushes, or sauntering along the sea shore, in search of curiosities. The Judge is a naturalist, and h’s pursuits are grealty agsisted and ren- dered pleasurable by the gay and lively digposition of ‘Miss ¥., to whom everybody has taken a great fancy. An iron hotel is talked of as the best, for some reasons, ‘which are the facility with which it could be im: and put up, and the style and appearance. In siand there is an abundance of etone fo: ing purposes, ‘but masons and laborers are few; aud, in fact, all our ope- ratives and meobanics are behind the age; they bave no opportunity of seeing and improving. if a sione hotel were to be erected, I ahould say, got it planned im the United States—tho greatest hotel country of the worli— import the principal masons, carpenters, painters, c: gilders, &c., and they would do as much work in'a Our people would ia.a week; add to which, the natives would Jearn something from the new comers much to their advantage.
