Mr, TomLiNson os, replied. Hoe gail the argumeuts of the gentleman from Oswego (Speaker Littlejoha) took force from bis elevated position, but they should have uo weight with the House when unsound. He ned himewif introduced a resolution Lato the House early in the session inquiring into the whole amount of the debt owed by the State, but through the carelessness or criminality of tne wajority tbat resolution bad slept inthe hands of the Canal Committee, He believed the State would never agree to pay one dollar towards the pay- ment of the Canal debt unul they ascertain what fs its amount, ana where it is to end. that course was taken, the people would gladly pay the principal aad interest. He reviewed the action of the House on the ia- torest bill, and charged that the Speaker had endeavored practically to arrest the Sapply bili, Unless he could force upon the House a disgraceful act, he sought to om barraes the Executive of the Stave by putting this interest in the Supply bill, and hampering this with other import- ant items. The removal of the Quarantine is not a consi- deration for Richmond county alone. ire was to drive pestilence from our shore, and an appropriation was asked sufficient to accomplish it. He was ashamed to hear the Speaker, who should be a statesman and legisia- tor from experience, advance the dangerous aod narrow minced doctrine that he would never remove the Quaraa- twe until the people of Richmond county had been pun- ished. Mr. Tomlinson closed by show- ing the necessity for the removat of Quarantine, aad urging the House to be guided by sense, reason and jus. tice. Mr. TuTHTL1 (rep.) said $50,000 would supply « tempo- rary hoepital sumewhere in the vicinity of New York, but tbat the people did bot want. Two hundred and ‘afty thousand doilars would insure the removal of Quarantine, and possibly secure Sandy Hook before the ‘New Jorsey Legislature had been {o session two weeks. If delayed, this business would have to be gono all over again. Au Appropriation made next pars would time to secure Sandy not desire to squander fifty thousand on hold butks and temporary buildings, as they had those now. They desired to lift up a great pest House, and bear it bodily away from the island. If the amondineat proposed by bim is added to the $250,000 appropriation, the last acts of the Legislature, like the notes of the dying awan, will be the swectest. The debate was continued by Messrs. Morris, Schole- field, Filkins avd others. Tho previous question was then ordered. ‘The question was first taken on the proposition of Mr. Mecks to make the aggregate appropriation of $326,000 fur Ube removal of Quarautine, The Conierence Committce on the tax levy reported they bad met. The ikms of $880,000 for. the Lowber and other judgments, and $20,000 for Mayor Wood's expenses in contesting tho Police law and Joseph Watker case wero agreed to and left in the bil; $1,000 for the Free Academy was stricken out; the clause al- towing the old police force to sue the Mayor and Commonalty for their salarics was gtricken out; the section authorizing the Comptroller to refase pay ment and contest ail obviously fraudulent jadgmeats, was restored to the bill; the item of $250,000 for the Cum- missiovers of Records. The appropriation for the payment of tho interest on the caval dratis was loet by 27 to 69.
