Assuming thie to be true, we ask ‘under what form and what banner shall we e1 fovore? This was the subject of frequent among 0s, and the prevailing opiaion was that we yevive and agsurce the honorable name of the Whig Party. If we look at the condition of the national demo:ratic Party (if, indeed, such an organization can be said to ex tut}, what do we see? Is there any unity of sentiment ameng them on the leading questions of the day? What Are the sentiments of a great majority of northern demo- crete on the subject of slavery?—adyerse to the fasti tem and opposed to its extension. There is no unity of fentiment among them on any leading question of the time: on the tariff question; on that of internal improve menta; on the acquisition of Cuba; on the Pacific Rai: read; on State riguis; and, lastly, on the African slave ‘rade, in one form or other, every shade of opinion has its exponents in the borom of the democratic party. Tbe proof of the disbanded state of its forces is found in the recent abortive session of Congress, whore, with a majority im both branches of that body, it was found tmporsible to harmonize its discordant elements, obstructing thereby the most necessary legislation, aud rendering an extra aqprion biebly obable, if not certain hat is the state of the cage in respect to this party in oor own State? We see around us the diesevered frag. ments of a once harmonious party. Dissension hag in. vaded its ranks, and the trident of power may goon be Boatched from its grasp. We profess to know nothing of tbe merits of this echism, nor whether it arose from a contiet about men or principles, nor who is ia the right ‘or wbo in the wrong, or whether itis likely to endure or to be heated; but we were eye and ear witnesses to the authoritative supunciation that the schism existed ino dignified debate in the Senate of the State. It suffices to say that we cannot act with either wing of the democratic party in the State, neither retlecting our views or princi- ples, and therefore consider the time propitious to reor- gavize the glorious old whig party, and cail upon ail trne conservative men amongst us to rally to our standard, and Jet us embody the conservative opmiens of our peo. ple in ope joud, clear, empbatic utteranre of the senti- went,‘ Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and in- separadle.”? Action, action must be onr watchword; and we exhort You to Bend delegates, good men and true, to meet in con- vention in New Orleans on the second Wednesday of Jane Bext, to nrgist in organizing the movement and nomi- nating aticket for the approaching State elections. We bope to Bee every parish in the State represented in that convention by able and intelligent men, and expect to Prove 10 our political adversaries thas the whig party, though aviet for some years, is not extinct The whig party has siumbered, it has not diet. The wisdom of its policy, the couservatiem of its principles, the unrivalled endowments of its gallont leader, Clay, who for eo jopg aud eventfel a period bore its hoaored banner in the thickest of the fignt, all betokened its in- destroctivility, and the effort we now make to unfurl its ‘fag once more to the battle and the breeze, further evi- dences its vitality and gives token of our devotion to the organization of our choice, gemmed as is its escutchoon ‘with the most brilliant portions of our political history. Lives there a whig with emotions eo torpid as not to feel tis bosom heave with patriotic pride as he reviews the past of our history, studded as every page of this history is, in characters of electric brilliancy, with the proud mamee of Ciay and Webster? Their genius impressed it welf with incifuceable durability ‘on the policy of tne ooubtry, whilst their profound statesmansuip, compre- hending the diversified interests of this great nation, sub- ordmated them all to the solution of the highest problem @f political economy in @ republican government—the greatest good of the greatest number; and the wistom of ‘their policy is proved by thig, that it has inextricably ia- terwoven itself with the succteding affairs of our feieral goverpment, and, like a golden thread, reappears in the current bwtory of our nutional affairs, alone redeeming them from the just repropation of a disappointed and suffering people. All honor to the old whig party, for the past of it3 history is at least aecure. In conclusion, we exhort you, in the burning eloquence of the gallant Harry of the West, “ arise! arise! shalc Off the dew drops that arments, and 0: more march to battle and to victory. L. A. The spirited canvass now progressing in Virginia, the energy With which the opposition to the present domi- nant party are preparing for the approaching campaign in Kentucky, and the cheering resounding of the old wnig wlegan from the mountains of Teunese: m to have excited @ cimilar spirit and zeal in othe South, to be followed, we nope, by simi tien. The addres of the whig members o' Legisiature to the people of that State is forcit aud timely, and is alrcady meeting with a becoming and encouraging response. Read it, brovher whigs of the old school, who have never fultered from the whig faith; read it, all ye who with patriotic intent temporarily allied yo Belves with the democracy: read it, conservat! ve patriot citizens who believe the Uuion still worth proserving, are ‘Wearied with the continual agitation of the slavery ques- ion, and think it time that oar dearest institutions were rescued from the foul touch of heated partisanship, no Jonger to be bandied about for political cxpital and to help self seekers to place and station; read it, detocrate, who have become disgusted and alarmed at the straits to which the party in power have reduced the country, and feo if its statements are not truthful, its charges just, its appeals cogent, its counsels sagac.oun. ‘We are ready to join heartand hand with our cotem- poraries in thie good work, and we truat that the thou- sande of “good men aud true” in Alabama whp are sick of miegovernment will aroure themselves for the good of the country, und let us once more march to battle, whether the result shall be defeat or victory, If the Hon. W. P. Chilton would consent to take the iield as a candidate for Governor we verily believe be could arouse such 2 spirit in Alabama as was nover before witnessed, and do much towards organizing and consolidating the party preparatory to the great contest of 1860. «We should be glad if a general opposition convention could be held, at suggested by the Seima Reporter and cor- respondents to other papers, atas early a day as prac- Ucadle. Will not some of our friends in the interior call primary meetings, agree upon the time and place fora convention, et Gelogates to it, and thus ‘‘set the ball im motion?” “We believe that Mobile would respond, gladly and in the right way, to such a movement. stirring POSTAL DIRECTORY.
