did Dr. Thompson do next? He was that object. What . at objerersonal friend of Mr, Tutbill, of county favored perare rmmitice on Commerce aad Navigaioa, ubject was referred. It was uaderstoot, | taxi lob this eee was appointed by the Speaker, that I had a majority bostile, or certainly Bot favorable, to tue interests of the people of Staten Island. [am cot apt to give overdue credit to my political oppoueats, bur I wish to Say that your representative, Mr, Chrisie, was a Litto to smart for Dr. Thompson, ‘for instead of getting toast committee aguinst vs, to the utter astonishment of our op ents When the first yoto was taken it was found that they stood turee to two for us What was the result of | that? So soon as a bili could be properiy adjuste1, aul | all the conflicting interests reconciled, a bill, savisfactory | tothe Chamber of Commerce, to the Governor of the State, to the Commissioners of Emigration, to your repre- sentative, and, I verily believe, satisfactory to you, Was reported by oat conumitiec. ‘oxck—Unanimously. a eee continuing) —What, then, was the course of Mr. This He rose and stated tat be did not favor thot report, and that when the time came he would report @ bill to suit himself. I kvo# wnat the partial con gent given to the committee bill by Mr. Tuthill was forced. ‘There was uo difference between his bill and that of the commiites, except tbat he added $50,000 to the approri4 tion, which was immaterial, as by the Committee bil the Commissioners were to be empowered to apply to the Le- gislature for all requisite funds. When the time.came for the Committee bill to come up in Committee of the Whole, Mr. Tuthill sprung upon the House an entire substitute for the Committee bill, and when taken up i was foun ‘that there was no material ditference, and the questio: arose, what could be the object of this substitute? ths fact Was, that the Heaith Otilcer, having failed to defeat th» Committee bili for the rewoval of Quarantine, aad fooling fore, made up his mind that he would endeavor w de prive Mr, Christie of the credit of procaring its ze. Now, Governor Morgan in his message ex pressed a marked hostility to the lobby. Yet, at this etage of the proces tings, Dr. Thompson came dowa, ant procured somebody to send 4 comuittes to Albany, woes there was no necessity for it. They bud not more tha, arrived there before 1t was announced taat there was a Jobby committee arrived from Staten Island. They were very respectable geutiemen, no doubt—one of them i know to be suca—yet, through the influence of Dr. Taomp, gon, they were pointed out as iovby mea trom Stuica Island—enough w damn the bill, if it was possib’e wo damn it, There was a great stir made. ristie's Dill had been set down for a fixed day; but tne presence of these men created a very serious misunderstanding about it, and with some created feelings of opposition to aay Dil! whatever, It afterwar: ed out tha Mfr, Caristie had not asked any lobby assigtance: that be relied upoo the truth of his cause, and when Luthill’s bill cams up it was knocked “higher than a kite,’ amd Caristic’s bill was ordered to a third reading. (Applause.) De. Thompson has been no friend of ours or of Staica Isuad, aud Goes not desire the removal of Quarantine. Uniter these circum stances, it does seem to be rather “crowding the mourn ers” to bave 1 represented in Albany that the people of Richmond county have passed resolutions to the effect that the removal they desire 1s not that of the Healtn Officer, ‘The first point is the removal of Quarantive; next wo brit, I take it, the removal of the altn Officer comes nearest to the heart of every man in this county. (Applause.) It bas beea said that there is a decides prospect for the retention of the Health Officer. He can ony be retained by the re-ap- poiutment of the Governor, or bolding over by the refusal of the Senate to coufirm. I kuow the Goveruor will take care of him, aud that be cau only be retained by corrupt- ing the Seuate, which I do aot think is possible. These two planks beiog taken from under him, will somebody be so kind as to infurm me how he can retaia his place? Lhave been a careful observer of what nas been going on at Albany, and I bave every reason to Velieve that your interests are in good hands; that the bi! for the removal Will most assuredly pase; that your representative bas done bis whole duty, ana that before tue sun sets on this day twelve months, there will be no Quaraptize on Statea Island. (Appiauee.) Mr. Ray Tomraiss, in seconding the resolutions, endorsed all that Mr. Bowne bad said, stowed that Dr Thompson was the getter up of the delegation to Alnaay, and made sundry charges of corruption against the Doctor, which be said be would most assuredly prefer against bim in case he held over. He predicted confitentiy that Dr. Taomp- 60D, as well as the Quarantine, would be speedily remoy- ed, and was grecte? with much applaus ° The resolutious were then adopted unanimously, and the meeting acjourned sine die, much elated at its impromptu success, Ex-Presipext FinuMore 1s toe West.—We have already stated tpat ex President Fillmore was go- journing for a day or two in our city. Last evening he ‘was caiied upon by the National American Association at the Burnet House, and haif an hour was very agreeably Spent in social grectingy. Mr. Fillmore, in receiving his American friends, made a brief speech, in whioh he thanked them for their courtesy and kindness on all occa sions; for their flattering preferences in the Presidential campaign, in which he bad the honor to be their standard dearer, and regretted, for their gratification, and the principles of the American party, that the campaign had Dot resulted differently. He spoke with confidence and foeling of the justness of the cause, and urged a steadi- ness of purpose, with all due moderation and regard for the rights of al!, which must ultimate:y lead to most satis. factory reeuits.’ For himself he would gay, that while be was thankful to bis American friends for the expression of their confidence and regard, he bad retired from public life forever. Governor Corwin made an appropriate re- ply to the ex President, in which he referred to the dis- tinguished services of the latter in the proud position which be had once occupied, as tre choice of a majority of the American people, and paid a handsome compliment to his statesmanship and acknowledged pubiic and private worth. The association and the large number of citizens present took leave of Mr. Fillmore with the warmest good wishes. MORTON, Olty Laspeotor’s Department, New York, NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY ions of Spiriiuallam— SHIPPING. jeged Abom! The Alleged Diniy to Dr. Eatohs TO THE EDITOR OF THR HERALD. In your Sunday morning Huraxp, March 6, I perceive that B. F. Hatch has taken the liberty to use my name in a connection with his abuse of spiritualists which places me in a false position before the numerous readers of your | widespread and useful journal, This I beg leave to cor- rect, and have no doubt that you will grant me thefavor. Your editorial notice of Mr. Gatch’s letter renders it im- portant that I should do so. Thave, Mr. Editor, delivered no lecture in detence of libertinism, as Mr. Hl. insinuates by placing my name io the category «ith such vile characters, My lecture was againet that odious sentiment, and in defence of the eanctity of the marriage institution. I labored to sustain the majesty of the law and the right of the community to interfere in this matter, and bring the violators of the law to justice ao long as the law continued in force. Truc, I Tecomme: ed an ameudment of this law, or the enact- ment of a new one, 80 as to enable the poor as well as tho rich to obtain a divorce before some lezaily appoiated officer of tbe government, without incurring the great ex pense and publicity that tee parties are now compelled to encounter, aud which deter many ao abused and suifering wite from the attempt. Still, 1 decidedly maintained that itehouid be done according to law,on the proof being presented to that appointed officer of tho trath of the sufferings of the complaining party, and that on the Strength of this the divorce be demanded as a legal right. I profess, sir, to bo @ Christian gpirtualist, aud content that both marriage and divorce should stand on Bible grounds, sustained by law. But Mr, Hatch’s object is to Nwpress the public mind that | am an aivocate of libortiag Principles, have delivered @ lecture in defsace of chat Ovious sentiment of which, it would segm, ho confesses hitseif to have been a professed and pfactical advocate, and “for bis timely escape from among taose who cherist such principles he thanks tis God far more than for any other event of his life!’ If hia professed reformation shail prove to be sincere, I certainly congratulate him on his fortunate escape, believing that, in his case at least, there will be ‘more joy in heaven over oue sinner that ro peuteth than over hinety-nine just persous wao weat ‘not astray.”” I feel myself by no means disposed to undortaks" the humiliating task of answering the articles of Mr. Hatch in detail. Isha! only defend myself against his foul inginu: ations. He has poured out the vials of bis wrath upon certait spiritualisis, whom he denounces as destivate of aii moral principle, aud with whom he once fondly associat- ed; then calls mo by name, aud by an intentional misre- presentation of my sentiments, places mein the ranks of bs former bosom friends, whom he now denounces as the most unprincipled of our r: 80 a8 to fasten upon my the odium of the community as’a public lecturer. Tis [ feel it my duty w correct, even ina man who makes it a part of his business to abese females. I feel uo dispo sition, Mr, Editor, to show the invonsisteacy of a man who, in his first article, admits spiritualism to be true, and then arguing that truth is infernal and can be mado & da mage und curse to the community, and renders it sincere advocates a set of uvprincipled — bainga. The admission that Christianity is true would, on this ground, prove it to be a curso to the community, avd all gincero Christians unpriaciplea beings fer believing and advocating its truth. Among the disci pies of Christ there waga Judas, who sasriticed him for money. Butdid this prove Christianity to be demoralizing, or that the other eleven disciples were also unprincipled scoundrels? In all ages there bave been in the Caristiin church Judages, base hypocrites and fa'se pretenders, who remained there for the gake of popularity and the ‘hope of gam in their business por-uits, 80 long as it would sub. serve their selfish interests. But when these failed to an. swer their unprincipled ends, they could turn, and, like Jvpiter swaggering on the top of Olympus, hurl at the devoted heaus of true Christians a thunderbolt, and half believe they bad done God service and rendered the un- believing community a favor. Among all Christian de- nominations now on earth there have been and still are Judases—faise pretenders, oppressors of the widow and the fatherless, thieves, robbers and swindlers, and mur- derers, and even libertines of the most degrading charac ter, who perbaps can descend so low as to introduce their own wives to women of iil fame as companions, and who practically set the sanctity of the marriage covenant and ali buman and divine iaws that sustain it at defiance, And many of these have been convicted, and not only filled our State prisons, but others have been executed upon the gallows, and even among these clergymen have been numbered, But, dear sir, does this prove that the doctrine of Christ is demoralizing, or that all pure minded clergymen aud all other sincere Christians ‘aro also dost tute of all moral principle? By no means, aud those who argue in this manner juuge others by themselves, Bat the same miserable cuaracters, Judases and hypo- critical pretenders, are professed spirituatiats is freely ad- mitted. For the hope of gain they enter its ranks, reap perbape a rich harvest, depy even their lecturing wives the common comforts of life, so as to embeazle their hard earnings, and when cut short of the golden harvest turn upon them in holy wrath—curse the cause of spiritual- iem, hold on to the ill gotten gain, and endeavor toruia the repbtation of their bosom companions, who brought money into their hands whieh they were unable to earn for them- selves. Ab, there ig nothing like policy. But that all tois proves spiritualism false, or its truth demoralizing, or that ite sincere advocates are unprincipled scoundrels, I have yet to learn. All this has no power to change the purity of an Edmonds, a Davis, a Warner, a Tail- madge, and thousands of otbers, or prove them to be un- principled men because tuey are true spiritualists. The; Stand on a mental and mora elevation far beyond the rewch of Mr. Hatch. ° Spiritualists baye no written creod, no organization a8 a body, and have no right to deal with unruly and unprin- cipied professors of spiritualism. Each stands or fails on his or Ler own responsibility, leaving them to the keen and searching glance and scrutiny of public opinion. That is the grand tribunal to whieh all true spiritualists appeal, before which they stand, and at which Mr. Hatch as well j@3 thoy must be tried. Brooks, March 10,1859. AMELIA JENNY DODS. Lrasitity or Rarroap Companres.—A judg ment was affirmed at the general term of the Superior Court in Cincinnati on the 11th inst., which is of interest to travellers and railroad companies. A gentleman pur- chased a ticket in Washington, from a general agent of all the lines, through to Ciccinnati. When be arrived his baggsge was missing, and he subsequently suet tho Little Mintoi Railroad Company for its vaine, and a jadgment was recovered in the court below. This was allirmed upon the ground that the ticket was recognized by tho de. fendants, which was sufficient evidence of the authority of the agent at Washington. There were no circumstances to show that there was a division or separation of con- tracts aa to the various lines in regard to the transports. tion of the passenger and his baggage. Tus Lars Gov. A.
