———— ee disappointment? The British trooye were terribly en. yagod, and determined to fad out where he had bid bim- teif, and not long after succeeded. They according!y etole a march upon him, and casting themselves suddenly epon bis forces, threw them into confusion, €o that they fled in all directions. Upwards of Oye hundred were killed, ‘and the attacking force seizod three thousand stand of army, which the flying rebels left on the field, for they were taken £0 much by surpries that they ‘pelted without their arms. Notwithstanding this Tautea in managed Wo escape, tiking with Lim several ele- ie and came s iaden with treasure. There are two forces following hima up; and Lieut. Kerr 1 wracking his footsteps with five hundred horse equipped on purpose, £0 that there is I'ttle doubt (hat he will be hunted down. It te reported that Licut. Kerr has sworn to take himor die im the attempt. He will be a fine prize to any one that succeds in taking him; for besides the jewelry that be has about bis person, and the treascxe be has oacried ofl, ib jewel known that he wears ine necklace of the late Rbauvee of Jhansi, who was killed at Gwaiior, and that alone is valued at upwarde of twenty-five thousand dotlars. Added to this there is a reward offered for bis bead that would make any man’s fortuue, aud ali will become the perty of his‘captor. Mirbere ism considerable force, under Brigadier Smith, who is now in our vicinity, following op Maun Sing, who has a force againet the British, or, what is the same thing, @ppored to the ‘Rajab of Gwalior, whom the British are bound to prowet for bis loyalty wil through the insurrection, ‘Muun Sing Bays he docs not wieh to fight the British, bat he secs no good reason why he should be tr buiar Gera ‘hor, and that be will not be. So, of course, Brigadier Bmith fettied accounts with him, and ‘meeting his forces on Sun- 2 the 14th instant, ‘Smith pearly cut them to pieces. Maun Sing’s force, beteve, would not fight, but threw down their arms, #0 that the English infantry went in and made great havoc and hier amongst them, whilst whe Eighth Hussars turned ir fank and kept them to gilt #0 that but few could escape, and driving them ick upon the infantry they were met with the bayonots and furiously slaughtered. Two men of the Eighth Hus- gars were Killed. It appears that they separated from ‘the main body to look over the dead, and while in tho act some of ibe mutineers came up aud tovk off their Deade, and then cut them into ribbons. It is yory dan- gerous to be away from your own party, for it ie hard to who is friend or who 1 foe on the baitle fold, “*Y cSnnot well too Jong on the various scenes we have Morar and Gwatior. I can oaly inform we had execution parades and executions Feats fare ‘There are, however, two or three that T must bay a, there is also one circumstance tuat I must On the evening of the 4th September, about , guns were heard in the direction of the fort, rity force in camp at Morar were ordered un. > “Our horses were saddled ‘and wo were ready ee tenn "oor the shortest notice. A strong troop moder Cay aire and the whole staff, set off at once for s treaeury at the fort, where the Soventy-first regiment joined & strong guard; and whea the men were anxiously looking for a close with the enemy, the news came in that the report of guns was caus by the ni tives, who were rejoicing at the birth of a son and heir to the Rajah of Gwalior. Av order bad been given that the happy event should have been made public before any Eakin commenced, but by some mistake it was not com- with; so the troops, after lying by their arms and vast for four hours, were dismisged to rest. On the 6th of September four Jearnaee of high rank ‘were blown away from gune at the Poolburgh; they were amen of distinction, and were sent here w endeavor to eause the Twenty-fifth Native Infantry to mutiny. Their Movements were closely watched, aud as eoon as they ‘were got together the English surrounded and made them prisoners. They said they were sent by the Nena, and ‘that they belonged to the Oude army. Ou the 10th of September the ajab heard that a plot bai been jeid to murder him as he roe out in hie car- riage. He therefore sent out bis empty carriage, with the ‘windows closed, and as it was passmg through the towa it was fired into, The perpetrators were gecured and hanged on the spot. ‘On the 4th of October the troops in cantonments paraded marching order for the inspection of Brig. Gen. Napier, ‘coromanding the Gwalior division, when @ native belong: we w the Fourth Gwalior contingent infantry wasexecuted for the murder of a@ Mre, Burrowee—the hanging takin; place a8 near the spot where the murder was committed 4s poseidie, While the prisoner was in prison, he openly ‘boasted that he bad been engaged in the butehery of one pele and eight European women. So he weil dceerved is fate. On the morning of the 10th September, a equadron with two guns and 100 men of the Eighty-sixth regiment, and some Seikh cavalry and infantry, went out to intercept some of the mutineers that were trying to cross the Scinde river, and they were ont until the 4th October; and ‘when they came in the eecond squadron was ordered to told itself in readiness, and on the morning of the 6ih marched on the same duty, NOVEMBER 29, 1858. We are still in camp at Mallaghur, and one bundred men.of the Twenty-fourth Bombay Native Infantry joined te force yesterday. I have just learned that the garrizon ‘wtoremain here to hold this place, for there is # large fort bere, and Brigadier Smith gos out to attack the evemy at’ Serongo to-day. Mivhai and Roberts Lave re- crossed the river Nerbudda, after giving chase to Tautea, but Genera! Kose and the Madras column hav. taken 0 the pureuit. Roge is not the man to let hito rest, and hope goon to be able to give you a good accoint of Lis doings. The Dutch Minister In Japan. DIS JOURNEY TO JEDDO—WHAT BE Saw BY THB way. {From the Java Courant, Deo, 3.) We are enabled to give the following particulare regard. ‘ing the official journey of the Dutch Commissioner in Japan tw Jeddo:-— From Nagasaki the route lay across Kin Siu to Kokara, from thence across the St ‘an «le Capelien toSemenoge- Xi, afterwards in a Japanese junk proses the inland sea hw Biog nd from thence again by land to Osaka, and by Riota (3iiaca) to Jeddo. ‘Tho whole journey was a state procession. Iu each town or village the Commiseioner on his arrival was met by the local authorities, who saluted him by bowing to Me ground. Persons belonging to the Sortage of the Com- misfioner—which was joined by euch landhelder on en- tering lis ground—preceded the twain and ordered we people to kneel, which wae generally done, even by per- sone at a considerable distance from the road employed ia the fields. Thege marks of honor were repeated along the whole route. In most places the roads were cleared and swept. Two yreons with brooms went before the train, In the yil- is every one had a broom placed before the door of his house; before some houses also lay two small heaps of sand or earth and a bucket of water, with which ere road ‘was sanded, graveiled and sprinkled in honor of the Com- missioner. ‘In the eyenwg cach house was lighted up by a paper iaptero. Similar marke of honor, but on a larger scale, were shown to the Commissioner whenever he pass- ed public buildings, in front of these stood ten buckets of water in a pyramidal heap, In anumber of pinces the fre engines were rigged outand decorated in the Japanese faehion. In front of the casties of the noblemen, Japanese officers were drawn up at the grand entrance, some with their state bapners apd some on their horees. To all the villages and towns, the middle of the streets through which the commander peased was kept clear, and tbe principal inbabitants were drawn up in rows in front of the houses: the greatest silence was obeerved on such Occagions—not a voice being heard. + ‘The Commissioner regularly occupied the houses of the Janded proprietors, which were very well furnished and comfortable; but being built in the Japanese styic there ‘wae no view "trom them. ‘The population’ appeared prosperous, healthy aud able- bodied, and even the lowest class was well droesed. Whon the Commissioner left Nagasaki the smallpox was very prevalent there, but at a distance of four or five miles from that town it ceased. In proportion to the popa- lation the numbers marked by smallpox were not great. ‘Vaccination is generally known; but being too much left \ the population themeelves, children are not vaccinated till their ceventh or eighth year. Opthalmia appears very prevalent, and many persobe blind of ove eye, or totally £0, Were Loticed. Leproty and elephaptiasis were occa- gidnally met with, but they did not appear w be generally revaient. The style of building and arrangement of the oures i8 Very plain, and a great uniformity everywhere prevails. They are ail of wood and clay; but in tiie coun- try the houses were found more generally covered with tiles. ‘Tue whole country is a euccession of hills and valleys, Which present very’ picturesque scegeg. ‘The public roads, whieb pear Nagasakt are but indifferent, were everywhere excellent, a8 much as porsible running through the low ground, and, where the uature of the cou permitted, ‘nusnally broad and overhung by large pine wees. Poune places avenues Were found some hours’ journey in length. The bridges in general are very excellent, and frequently built of hewn stone, Agricuiture appears to occupy an important position in Japan, and, according to the Commiseioner, bas attained great perfection. They manure heavily. On the outward Journey the ficids were sown with wheat, tye, Tape seed, ‘and different kinds of peas and beane. (On the retern journey, three montbé later, the Commissioner noticed that the same fields were planted with rice, cotton, gum, ‘oil feed, maize, millet, and different leguminous plants. Tobacco ‘is only found in mal) patches, and the leaves are dried in the Houses in very sma}! quantities. Gardens of tea are not met with, but the tea plant is found on the borders of the fields, The product of this culture does not seem to be considered as worth manpfacture, The commissioner only noticed silk growing on a very fmol! scale. The wax tree was abundant, aud many new plantations of it were seen, Gardens or ‘vogetabie euiti- Yation were only found in the vicinity of the larger towns. The country produces very few good fruits, The cherry treo is very abundant jn Japan, and is unusually conspicuous froth its beautiful blossom. Many orchards of peach trees were observed. There arc also in Japan abundance of pears, apricots, plume agd several kinde of applee, as well as the vine, Bet most of those fruits aro uneatable by Europeans when uncooked, as the Japanese use all Teuite ina half ripe State. The graft ing of fra trees is well known, but little practised, ox is plentiful aid well attended to, but is only in cultivation and for transport. Stall feeding is only followed; grazing is not to be met with, The horses are handgome, numerous and yaluable. Rather more swine are reared than formeriy. Fowles and ducke of dif- ferent kindé are unusually tine. The wild animals consist ‘of pigs, deer, hares, pheasants, ducks, thrushes, doves, plovers, snipes, &c. The forests, Which only exist on the higher part of the hills, consist principally of handsome pine and cedar trees, Stone quarries are worked in almost every hill. At Nippon the vs fare mostly composed of sand, and the water tien, Phead from ‘them forms miler wand rivers, which have sone nearly filled up & number SS bays. Coal mines are being more and more worked pecially in dhe astrict of Teusen, at. Kiusa.” Tho, Oom- missioner did not notice any other mifles; but ome one 00- casion he romarked a Tider ‘post, ou which was written ‘Road to tho Silver Mine.”? on a large scale, and the coast je 1 distilleries were seon in man; places, Water mills are abundant, from tho facilities atiurded by the aa- merous mountain ‘streams. une. From the same cauge ire gation is much used jn the rice cultivation. Wh the exception of the residences of the higher fund- tionaries and the military, cach house on the eide of the Digh road is literally eithor a store or workahop, wherein an almost exclusive retail native trade is carried o which presents very fow objects auitable for export. in every Houge one /8 ceria to fod either a epinning wheel iy Pp many of number of a passed was . ‘united to each ‘by streets some hours moaays of avecianll iranapers Mee muaneytinle of improvement. shere is almost none. ee ane of hel car age baw earl y means of small craft, and the coast- is uncommonly brisk, in thi re fea, between Kiu-Siu, . ‘When the Commissioner crossed it was covered with sail der Cupellen Strait, although’ indifferent harbor, in consequence of which very few junks anchor there. A number of ese officers were ready to re- ceive him, who informed 2 him that in consequence of ia- digposition, the Governor of Nagasaki could not then visit him, but would do go in a few days. The American pleni- potentiary was lodged on the north side of the castle in a eimilar manner, and immediately exchanged courtesies with the Duteh Commissioner. Al due preparations having been made, the Commis- sioner fig on the 13th of May, admitted to an au/lience th the Emperor, who was found eeated on his throne, surrounded by his councillors. ‘The Commismoner ad- yanced, inpking three bows, and a conversation, which had been arranged beforehand, ensued, the Emperor speaking in the Jaj language and the Commissioner in Dutch, Wwithort the Mietgeat jon of interpreters. The Commissioner then withdrew. ‘The Commissioner returned to Nagasaki by the same route he bad formerly taken, and arrived there on the With of August. The Cotns of Japan. Assay Ovrice, U. 8. Mint, Feb, 6, 1859. Hon. J. R. Sxowpen, Director of the Mint, &c. :— There are few matters of greater curiosity in regard to the people of Japan than their system of moneys; and at the present moment, when public attention is much drawn in that direction, some details would, we presume, be timely and acceptable. ‘The series of Japanese coin consists of three sizes of fold, two of eilver, and three of an alloy of inferior me- tals. In their shape, composition and relation to each other, they jaar some striking features, which eet beast apart from every other sysvem of coinage in the world, The principal gold coin, known as the cobang or cobank, is of an ovai shape, about two and a half inches long and half ag wide. It is very thip, soft and easily bent, Naving ‘nO elasticity; its appearance is that of fine gold, and its surface is marked by sundry figures not well understood as yet, although it is said that the flowery ornaments are “the arms of the gpiritual emperor,” and that a certain central cypher ‘s the special {mprint of the “Inspector Ge- The weight, two spacimens agreeing, 's ornearly 174 gra d is a gold piece of one-fourth that weight, and 1 A quarter of the preceding, called the ‘gold itzeru;” but its form js entirely different. It is focr sided, rectungu- lar, and very thick, three-fourths of an inch long, and balf that in width. ’The smallest gold coin is the half itvebtz, of proportiona! size. We have then the silver itze- bu, and ite quarter, of tue same domino shape; the larger piece weighing 280 thousandthe of an ounce, or 15434 grains. Parsing to the third division, there is) the “hundred p’senny,”’ a casting of red brase, oval and thick, meagur- ing two inches long, aud a little more than bal as wide, ‘with a hole In the ceatre. four, and one p'seucy y and ecarcely to be dietinguished from the wel! Chinese casn. ‘Tne composition of theee coins, a subject falling within our partionlar province, hae been to rome extent examin ed. The cobang and itzebu. as was observed, have the appearance of fine gold, and, it is gaid, are regarded at home as being of bigh quality. But it # only ueceseary to scratch away the surface to discover that the Japanese underetand the proccss of pickling, well known 19 workers in jewelry, whether in America or Asia, or even in the centre of Africa. Trusting to the somewhat permanent effects of “hard biting,” they have not even added cop- per to mitigate the whitening «fect of silver sion the mixture being gold and sfiver. and not far from equal pro- portiore.. The cobang, two pieces assayed, ga 6014 and 6683¢ thoueandths fine; the itzebu reeu! 6. These figures indicate ‘a designed, the gh probad} cret standard. . The coneequent intrineic values are, according to our Mint rates, and allowing for silver con? tained, $444 for the cobang and $1 11 (nearly) for the itzebu. Tt is interesting to obterve that, although eo |gnorant of the methods of other nations, Japan has imitated, aud even exceeded them, in the process of deteriory money. Abont the beginning of the last century the co- bang—quite similar in ye and device to the present plece—weighed 272 graing, was 954 fine, and worth just ten dollars. A cantary later it had fallen to 196 gra: 667 fine, and worth (including silver) five dollare and go venty-elght cents. Tie smallest gold coin has not been assayed: it evident- ly contains but little gold. and has therefore a forced vaiu- ation. ‘The transition to the next n order, the largeet silver coin, affords a fresh surprise, It is found to ‘be of almost absolute inepess—that ‘is, 991 thousandths— and is worth 37 cents. While this proves that the Japa- nese possess the art of refiuing, it does not explain why they debase the gold, and refine the silver. Tue smallest silver piece ie apparently not inferior in fiaeness. ‘The foregoing details will be interesting to the numis- reatiet and motalturgist, but.the fact which remains will ex- ci a more popular attention. It ig in regard to the legal relation which these coims bear to each other, Insulated from the ree} of mankind, the Japanese have proportion ed goid to silver according to their own ideag of use and knows siale of suppl The goid and silver itzebu are, as is stated, interchangeable; that is, a piece which is worth jn our eyes 11 cents “ond to a Japanese worth fiearily ag much a8 two of our gold doliars, because he supposes it to be much better gold than it is), buys no more than a piece which, with us would be 87 cents. The Spanish or Mexican dol lar they consider equa! to three itzebus ; which js t fourths of a cobang, or $333. The abundance of goid, o scarcity of silver, which creates such a strange ratio would no doubt be promptly eorrected by foreign traders for the sake of the enormous profit, But, unfortunately there is a stringent law against the exportation of coin, which makes it very difficult even to get a few pieces for assay. For our facilities in this respect we are’ indebted to the perseverance of a gentieman who is interested in the collection of rare coins, and to his correspondent abroad. ‘What relation the oval piece of brass, which passes for “one hondred”’ bears to the itzebu, we are not informed. Jt weighs only about six times ag much as the piece of one psenny, and therefore bears an arbitrary value ; unless brase ig there held to be yastly more valuable than an alloy of copper and lead, which’ appears to be the com- position of the coin which etends ”, “ bottom of the Reale.
