Pacific Mail again attracted attention by the eccentricity of its movements. It closed yesterday at 77; opened this morning at 73, rose to 76, and closed in the afternoon at 763. The story at the morning board was that Com- modore Vanderbilt was about to open the Nicaragua route, and bad actually advertised the departure of his first steamer. We imagine that the authors of this tale have drawn somewhat upon thelr faucy. Commodore Vander. biit may obtain the Nicaragua grant, and may re-open the route in opposition to the Pacific Mail; but nothing of the kind bas yet been done, The decline in the stock is more the effect of certain well known speculative known as “ puts’? and “calls”? than of the e'3 movements. The Louisville people have been having a series of operas by the Strakosch company. The ‘Traviata’? was brought out on the 27th, with Mme. de Wilhorst, Squires itenbe), Ataodla and Migs Henrietta Simon. The prima lonna gurprised the editor of the Democrat with her act- ing and singing. Mr. Squires is very highly spoken of, and is quietly making a fine reputation, Miss Simon’s début was a success, Mad. de Wilhorst, Mr. Squires and Signor Amodio were called before the curtain twice, at the end of the third act, and again at the conclusion, The company is now at St, Louis, where Brigaoli joins them. Mille Piccolomini’s early appearace at Buffalo ig an- nounced in the local papers. Itis rumored that Ullman and Strakosch will give opera at the same time in Cinein- nati. / ‘We have still another defence of the drama, in the shape of a pamphlet, from the pen of William Davidge, come- dian. In questionable taste it is dedicated “ with respect to the public generally and with commiseration to Messrs. Strickland, 'T. L. Cuyler, &., &., &c.”” The style of the book may be judged by that of the dedication. It reminds one very foreibly of the old story of the bar- rister who found his brief endorsed with the wonts ‘abuse the plaintiff’s counsel.’ It is not defending the drama to abuse the clergy. Neither docs it follow logically that the stage is always right because the pulpit sometimes goes wrong. The ground taken by the parsons {s not that the drama is necessarily evil of teelf, but that the surroundings of the stage are not such as encourage virtue and promote morality! that they tend to tempt the professors of the stage and iis habitués to laxity of conduct. That many plays and players are hiable to this objection is beyond peradventure; and the fact that a clergyman has been hanged for horse stealing, and that no actor ever was executed, does not shake the position, The best defence of the drama is in fhe fact Ubat it bas flourished in spite of the bad men and’women who have used it asa shield for their vices and & conve- nient cloak for their immoralities. There is good in it— inherent good—and therefore it bas triumphed, That is the proper ground to take, Messieurs, the defenders.
