At tho firat meeting some of the audience disapproved of the strong language of the preacher, but little was said about it, until at a subsequent meeting some strange and incredi- bie stories were related, The preacher is also stated to have asked a brother who had never, taken a very active part in the meeting to come forward aud open with prayer, and upon his excusing himself, preferring that somo others Should assume the duty, the preacher immediately re- joined, “Brother S—, you have a soul blacker than h—I.”” Many of the audience, it is stated, came to the conclusion that such exhibitions were not the working 0 a true Christian spirit, and that injury rather than benefit ‘was likely to be experienced. Some abgonting themselve: from the meeting, the pastor preached against them a« ‘opposing the work of God, and the breach in the church thug been in this manner increased, PRAYER IN CONGRES! During the past week the weather continued mild, yet Bot so pleasant overlead as during the previous week Indeed, it may be said that we have had lately all sorts of weather. Three weeks ago we experienced the coldest “snap” we have had for “seventy years.” The following Week we chronicled the fact that the atmosphere was 80 mild and the weather so pleagant that Broadway pedestri- ans and lady shoppers found overcoats, winter mantles and furs quite oppressive, And during the past week, what? Why, umbrellas, water-proof clothing, top boots, hackney coaches and cough mixtures were in great de mand. At dusk on Thursday evening a rain storm commenced, and continued with great force, except at short intervals, until daylight on Saturday morn- ing—stopping only to take afresh start. During Satur- day forenoon and afternoon it did not rain, but a regular Londonish drizzly fog set in, which continued throughout the day. With the raincame the usual copcomitant—fog. Yes, for three days wo havo been betogged, not by a common sea fog that pays a visit for a few hours and then disappears, but by a rogular Newfoundland fog, that, to use a nautical phrase, “ might be cut with a knife.” This is, no doubt, owing to the unequal temperature of the atmosphere during the last three weeks. It greatly incommoded navigation and ren- aered it perilous. Fog bells and whistles were constantly in use during Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, as it was only by sound the ‘ferry boat pilots were enabled to steer weir craft. During “a portion of Saturday the ayueous vapor Was so low, dense and compact that the pilots could discern the topmasts of vessels at the docks, while the hulls were entirely obscured. At the latter part of the day the fog had almost disappear. ed; but at night it returned with redoubled density. To ruu the ferry boats on Friday and Saturday nights with any degree of regularity, was out of the question; and at some of the ferries the boats stopped running. Safety of human life—a virtue not always possessed by steamboat men and railroad conductors—was more than ordinarily observed. Transient craft made it conventent .to remain stationary, and the steam towboats went about’ cheit bu- The ‘oldest inhabitant” says ho over expericncod, » streets Lave been well washed, but not sufficiently ‘arry aWay the ith that has been accumulating for several months. The accidents and casualties during the prevalence of the fog sum up as follows:— On Friday morning the steamboat Sylvan Grove, plying and between this city and Harlem, ran down one of the well’s Island yawl ferry boats, dashing it to pieces, precipitating the crew—ten in ‘number—into the river Uhree of whom, named Michael Grabam, Thomas Loe, and Dapiel Mahoney, were drowned. The ‘others were’ res- cued, On Friday afternoon the steam tug boat Sarah E. Brown came in collision with the Jersey City ferry boat Dud- ley 8. Gregory, carrying away the forward rails and about fourteen feet of the ladies’ cabin. Nobody was injured. On Friday efternoon the steamboat Syiph came in col- lision with the steamboat Huguenot, near Staten Island, breaking away the wood work forward, butdoing Lo othor lamage. The telegraph reports that on Friday snow fell to a depth of nine inches at Rouse’s Point; at Saratoga, threo inches; at Bellows Falls, nine inches; at Rutiand, Vt., six inches, and at Boston, Providence, Sprivgfleld and Albany it was raining. The roads and ponds all along the river counties are overflowing, and from present indications the frozen condition of the Hudson river cannot long withstand «King Thaw.” Chty Intelligence. He complains that the manner and language of the complainant were most insulting, and that, although he did use gome strong expressions in his reply, it was only after he had been bullied and abused into it. He de- nies, however, haying employed the coarse expressions attributed to him. Tae Accent To THR BLackwEtt’s Istanp Boat.—In our account of the unfortunate drowning of three men in the East river, oa Friday, we stated it was the Harlem boat Syivan Shore which ran into the Biackwell’s Island boat.
