Our commander, who in per- *on a'one bas al! the attributes that are generally found in the sailor and the gentleman, is a host in hizagelf, and I haye no doubt, even under a pretty heavy fire, would pre- verve that quiet necessary to fight a vessel in presery- ing the name that has been already gained for our nation. ‘The wardroom officials also have that happy knack of veing gentlemen and at the same time adhering to the strict line of duty, making stern duty even a cheerfal Pleasure to obey. For ourselves, we have very comforta- bie quarters for a steamer, and are very bappy; aud as boye—the crew proper—with but few exceptions, are good and weil tried men, and enliven the evening hours by well timed melodies until the time arrives to give the order, ‘‘Al) lights out,” when the ship relapses into the silence of ship-of-war at night time. ‘The engines have worked very well, and given every Patisfaction up to the present time, the ship, although no working up to ber full proamure, making nine knots an oer, and, as far as we have seen, has prov horself an excellent Sea boat. We un- shipped from the buoy off the Navy Yard, New York, at four o'clock on the morning of the 15th, and stood for kea in adense fog; discharged the pilot off Sandy Hook, and by three o'clock there were indications of clear weather. The second day out we bad a fair wind and good weather, Which continued during the sail. We are all pleased with the Memphis and have the best confidence in her as a sea boat. During the passage we stopped but twice “to key up,”” occupying but a few moments. Her engines are in per- fect order, and we have run as fast ten knote—averaging aboot eight. Upon arriving here we fonnd in port the At- lanta ana Westernport. The Caledonia had not been heard from since sbe and the Atlanta outside of New York. It is the impression here that she put into some port in the United States. The Westernport has been here about ten days, undergoing some slight repairs; the At- lanta about five days. Having coaled, they both put to sea this afternoon We will complete ‘coaling in three or four days, and will immediately start for Pernambuco, ‘The captain's main object is{despatch; eo we will lose no time; and if we do not precede the Westernport and At- lanta we hope to eucceed them but a few hours at Percam- buco.
