COMMENCEMENT OF “0® prpricuLtY- it appears, from what vias duveloped vigciny, Sho about 11 o'clock on *e.urday night, three men, two tem vamed John Glasy, and James Higgins, com- menced a rowdy demovastration upon the assignation nous» of Wilhelm Decker, No. 21 Elm street, by uncere- monjou‘ly forcing en the front door, and rushing pell- mel! up stairs, breaking the hall lamp and otber articles ‘of forniture in their ascent, They then entered one of the bedrooms Gccupied by Decker and his wife, and de- molished @ wirror, a large china wash bow! and basin, to- gether with. several other pieces ot property. At first Decker found it useless to offer any opposition to the row- dies, but finally, after a severe struggle, he succeeded in getting them down stairs, and had just closed the front door upon them when they turned upon him, and fired two shots at him with a revolver. The balls passed through the door and lodged in the bead and body of Decker inflicting ‘mortal wounds, The sbots were fired from the sidewalk, and evidently proceeded from Glass, although Decker seems to be of the opinion that it was Higgins who used the pistol. THE MURDER OF MR. OWENS. 7 Decker fell to the floor, erying “Murder, murder,”” and his assailants turned to flee, when a citizen of South Brook- Iyn, named Richard Owens, suddenly came upou them aud endeavored to prevent their escape, Finding themselves cornered, and fearing that they would be detected, the as- sailants determined to get rid of Owens, and accordingly they all three set upon him, and in a few secouds suc ceeded in murdering him in the most cruel manuer. One of the fellows dealt Owens a powerful blow on the head with a knife or slung shot, while another put @ pistol to his heart, and discharging the weapon, killed ‘he unfortunate man instantly. Having got clear of the interruption caused by the approach of Owens, the murderers took to their heels, aud managed for the time Deing to make their escape. Information of the affair being conveyed to the Sixth precinct station house, In- spector Dowling despatebed policemen all over the city im search of the fugitives. Two of the officers went to the Jersey City ferry, 80 as to intercept the offenders should they attempt to leave the city by that route, -while others were sent to the Brooklyn ferries for a simi- Jar purpose. SCENE AT THE NEW YORK HOSPITAL. ‘The body of the murdered man was then conveyed to the New York Hospital, while a doctor residing in the immediate neighborhood was called upon to attend the wounded man Decker, who was not expected to live from one moment to another, Upon ‘an examination of the person of the injured man, it was found that one ball had taken effect in the left side of the head, penetrating the skull, while the other entered the body nearly under the left arm pit, and glancing up wards lodged in the cavity of the chest. Decker was attend- ed by Drs. Quimby and Simmons, and after undergoing a most painful operation was relieved of the bullets which had entered bis head and body. The operation lasted two hours, and was performed with much care and skill. THE CAPTURE OF THE ALLEGED MURDENERS Was successfully accomplished in less than an hour after the occurrence of the event just mar- Fated. In about half an hour after the 1 policeman Flynn traced Glass to the corner of Broadway and Pearl street, aud there arrested him. The prisoner was promptly con- ‘veyed to the station house, where be mavifested much surprise at bis situation, and asked what he was arrested for. Ata later period in the night Inspector Dowling managed to arrest Higgins in Fim street near the scene of the tragedy, and he also manifested the same surprise on being charged with the murder of Mr. Owens. The prisoners were both locked up in the cells and closely ded. The officers continued in pursuit of the third ty all night long, and, even up to yesterday afternoon, Bat without success. STATEMENT OF AN EYEWITNESS. The attack upon Decker was witnessed by a young man Bamed William Meyers, who is well acquainted with Glass, and gave our reporter We runewing wtrtemens tm Telation to the affuir:—Meyers was standing on the oppo Bite eide of the street when the shots were fired, and eays he distinctly saw Glass fire two shots at Decker through the hall door. Being much frightened he then turned nis face and fled, fearing be might be hurt. Just aithst moment he heard a third shot fired, which un- doubtedly was the one which took effect upon Owens. Soon afterwards Meyers returned to the scene of the murder, and gave information of the occurrence to the Police, which resulted in the arrest of Glass and Higgins, as principals in the murder. PROCEEDINGS BEFORE CORONER JACKMAN. Coroner Jackman was upon the ground at an early hour yesterday morning, and took preliminary measures for holding an inquest upon the body of deceased. A jury, ‘who subsequentiy acted in the ante mortem examination of Decker, aud whose names will be found below, was em- panelled, and, upon view of the body, sworn to give the ‘matter a thorough imvestigation. A’ post mortem exami- nation of the body was made by Dr. Ferguson, and his testimony in relation to the matter was the only evidence elicited. The Coroner deemed it advisable to adjourn the case over until this morning, and therefore postponed the examination of the other witnesses wmil to-day. Dr. Fer- Guson’s evidence was as follows:— MEDICAL TESTIMONY. John Ferguson, M. D., residing at 189 East Eighteenth street, being duly sworn, says—I have made a post mortem examination of the body of Richard Owens, now lying dead at the New York Hospital; I found two incised wounds of the scalp about two inches in length; there was a circular wound of the chest about one and a half inches from the mesial line on the left side; this wound ‘was opposite the sixth rib, and d obliquely upward and inward to the upper border of the fifth rib, which was splintered at this point, entering the chest opposite the eait, passing through the right ventricle through to the Fight lung, which it penetrated in un oblique direction upwards and backwards, and lodging in the intercostal muscles, near the lower border of the third rib about two anda balf inches from the vertical column; death was caused by internal hemorrhage from said wound THE ANTE-MORTEM EXAMINATION. Coroner Jackman, on being notified of the dangerous condition of Mr. Decker, deemed it avisable to proceed to the New York Hospital, and there bold an ante-mortem examination. Accordingly, he empannelled a jury of six tiemen, who answered to their names as foliows:— William G. Kettelle, 47 Amity street; Edward G. Eggles- ton, 57 Fulton street; 8. B. Kilisthorp, 871 Broadway; Loren. 20 ,9 Beckman street; Wellington Browne, 232 Sixth avenue, John Harrison, 157 Sullivan street ‘then proceeded to the bedside of the injured man, when the latter gave the following statement in relation to the affair, implicating the prisoners Higgins and Glaas as Principals in the murder :— Wilhelm Decker being duly sworn, deposes and says:— Tam covscious of my dangerous condition; I was in the house No. 21 Elm street, at eleven o'clock last night, Jan- uary 15, 1869; Iregide in that house: the prisoners now before me, named James Higgins and Jobn Glass, I re- as beitg among the parties who fired at me last Siete emer Higgins I am more satisfied of than the oth prisoner, as I believe he was the person who fired; T not recognise them by their faces, but only by their irees; the door was ajar when the ghots were fired, and was in the act of putting them out; there was no trou Die between the prisoners and myself, but they came wo my door and wanted to force their way in; the prisoners are strangers to me; they were not intoxicated, as fur as Icould observe; the prisoners were on the sidewalk and I went to lock my door when thoy first attacked me; I bad no words with them, neither did I ive them any provocation for the attack; when they ret forced their way into my premises they rushed up wtairs and broke the lamps in the hall on the second ‘Tiss ante-mortem examination having been concluded, the matter was submitted to the jury, who, after due de Liberation, rendered the following VERDICT. ‘That Wilbelem Decker came by his wounds at the hands of James Higgins and his confederate John Glass, January 16, 1869. Upon the rendition of the above verdict Coroner Jack- mab committed the {prisoners to the Tombs to await the iit of the wounded man's injuries, as also a number of persons who were witnesses of the occurrence.
