————_—_—~— News aad from Correspondents. Im these days of gold digging, everybody ought to know that a great deal of dross is always foand mixed with the gold. It is just so with the mass of the cor- vespondence of a leading popular newspaper like the Banaww. Wo are expected to devote our space to the eompiaints for ali sorts of grievances, or to the record of ‘spimportant news, ad libitum. We cannot do this, because eur advertisers make heavy demands on our space, which mast be met. We therefore take the liberty of “ boiling @ewn’’—t0 use a professional phrase—e large pile of com- munications, which, we think, are much improved, in the following shape. Brevity is the soul of wit:— POLITICAL FEVER IN VIRGINIA. “J.8. H.” of Richmond, telig us that, notwithstanding ‘thas the Wise faction swallowed Letcher, there is a large party opposed to letting the democratic nominee ride over ‘the course alone. The defunct whigs and Americans think ‘they have a better chance of success, as there are rumors ef Letcher’s unsoundness on the slavery question. John ‘M. Botts and Williaw Ballard Preston spoken of as the contestants, and our correspondent thinks that peg would stand a pretty fair chanoe of election, on ac- eeunt of the prejudice against abolitionism, which, be guys, is growing in the State, and the Gibraltar of whig- gery may again be revived, €28 THEKE A STRONG OPPOSITION TO TRE NEW HIGH- LAND REGIMENT? An officer of the Highland regiment, who claims to havo been present at arecent meeting of officers of the First Division, denies that at that meeting any resolutions were passed desiring the Commander-in-chief not wo granta ebarter to the new Highland regiment. He says that there were but twelve officers of the five hundred in tho @ivision present at the meeting; that they had no author!- ty to represent the division, and ought to be court martial- fea for insubordination in consuring their superior officers: who favor the new regiment, FRIENDS OF J. M. HOBART WARD AS COMMISSARY GENERAL. ‘Im order to insure the continuance in office of Mr. Ward, the present Commissary General, extensively signed peti- tions have been procured, requesting Governor Morgan to Reappoint him. There are among the names those of ‘Meutenant General Scott, ex-Governor King, Major Gene- vals €. W. Sanford, H. B. Duryea, J. T. Cooper, 8. 8, Burn- pide and Nelson Rendall, besides twenty-two brigadier generals in command, eight iu stalt, tifty-two colouels in eommand and thirteen in staf, and 897 oificers below the rank of colonel, A COMPLAINT ROM PORT JERVIS. A citizen of Port Jervis compiains that the Delaware aad Hudson Canal Company do not provide suitabie Bridges over their canal, which crosses one of the princi- pal thoroughfares of the place; that the agents and super- iwtendents build bridges to suit their own private property, and let the public take care of itself He says the local superintendents amass fortunes on salaries of from a dol- lar and a half to two dollars per day, and thinks that with proper matagement there would be no necessity of selling the stock below par. SNOW ON THE SIDEWALKS—REMISSNESS OF PUBLIC OPFICIALS« Incog.”” suggests that since the walks of the public sqpares are not properly cleared of snow, itis hardly fair for ity Fathers to expect citizens to oboy the law in this respect, on the principle that “sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.” ‘< D” is indignant that the lawe in this respect are not @arried out, and while he could refer to many residences @f well-to-do people, contents himself with complaming of @nombper of large hotels, the Post Office, Custom House, ana certain banks, which jeuve the suew vatouched on the sidewalks, to the great damage of pedestrians, SHOULD RUNAWAY MARRIAGES BE REWARDED, “Justice,” an individual, by the way, who isin thehabit ef frequently writing to the newspapers, is exceedingly indignant at a contemporary for favoring runaway matches, which he looks upox as a disobedience of the Divine command, ‘Honor thy father and thy mother.” He @oncludes that though parents need not follow the disobe- @ients to the grave with anger, nor harbor bitter feelings against them, and though they may possibly exercise for- eness, they are not bound to reward the of . He does not endorse the wil! of Mr. Taorn- dyke, but thinks that runaway marriages ought to be eondemned. AMERICANS OPPRESSED IN THE PRUSSIAN ARMY. “Outo von Prhein” vents bis indignation on the injustice practiced upon Americans enlisted in the Prussian army. Be says that many have vainly tried to escapo, and though they are naturalized American citizens, they are eepiined in Prussian prisons, at hard labor, in company with thieves and robbers. Ho says, ‘These undiguitied apnoyances must act as a continual drawback to the etherwise increasing intercourse of the United States in Germany; and the political, commercial and social inter- eourse of this country, loudly cail for reform.”” LO! THE POOR INDIAN! “Rifles,” writing from Fort Dalles, Oregon, says he has read all sorts of pleas for, and romances about, the poor ‘wronged Indians, but that he has ever found them treache- rous, cowardly, lazy, diseased and drunken, and he has geen them, of almost every tribe, from the Falls of 8t, An thony to ‘la Platte, in South America. He thinks the troops engaged in fighting them deserve the earnest sym- pathies of government. ABUSES AT THE CASTLE GARDEN EMIGRANT DEPOT Mr. James Whitelegge, ot East Braintree, Mass., com- plains bitterly of the abuses of the Castle Garden Emigrant Bepot. He says that bis wife told him thata principa efficial in the Garden broke open the letter which he sent her, desiring her, on her arrival from England, to go to Boston by a certain route; that the principal official de- @acted $2 50 from the five dollars which the letter con- tained, and told her that she must go by another route; and that the weighmaster refused to weigh her baggage unless she gave him a quarter; that, contrary to his ex- Press instructions, his wife was sent by the Stonington route; that the weighmaster told her all her luggage was en board, but that » valuable carpet bag was missing; ‘that the oficial who took the responsibility of opening his wife's letter said he knew nothing about the lost property, ‘and was not responsible for it; and that, on the whole, he thinks Castle Garden bears the same relation to New York that the “swell mob” does to London. BRIDGING THE EAST RIVER. Mr. W. suggests that the plan of a ship canal connecting the North and Kast rivers is not chimerical, and that should this be done the East river would remain a basin for small craft, while the new channel to the East river would, without camage to navigation, allow of the erec- tion of five bridges connecting New York and Brooklyn. He thinks a bridge could be erected from the Battery, by the skill of masonry, with an elevation of one hundred and twenty fect, admitting under it vessels of the largest “ote MARTIAL EXTRAORDINARY AT WEST POINT. “A private soldier” sends us an amusing account of a recent novel court martial at this post, It appears that a huckster visiting the post incantiously left a turkey with the guard for safe-keoping. The fow! mysteriously dis- appeared, and the utmost rigors of @ court martial failed to discover its whereabouts, In the course of the testi- mony one of the witnesses, whose stomach had not yet become inured to military diet, testitied as follows:—“I paither tasted, touched nor handied it, but, by the hoie in me coat, if we have to live much longer’ on cookhouse diet, wil send us to the graveyard—or to the peniten- tary.” THE GOLD PRODUCT OF FRASER RIVER. Mr. H. M. Snyder writes us from Fort Yale, Fraser River, flattering accounts of the gold product. He says that at Hill’s Bar, Emoy’s Bar and Texas Bar hands have averaged for the last two months twenty dollars per day each, and that there have been twelve hundred men making thees wages by digging and washing. Between Fort Hope and Fort Yale he thinks there are fifteen hundred miners averaging four dollars per day; and from Fort Yale to Upper Canon, two thousand miners making from three to ten doilars per day. Many miners, however, were leay- ing for home, discouraged; they were mostly from Califor- nia. Fort Yale, at the head of navigation of Fraser river, he thinks will be soon «large town. It now consists of one tin shop, two blacksmith’s shops, three ehoemakers’ shops, four doctors’ shops, o fee -one general stores, besides gambling houses. He says Governor Douglass is iy oes the miners from the Indians. olunteer companies had to be organized, and one which he commanded conferred with twenty-seven chiefs, and secured peace. Bat Governor Douglass could not even pay for the provisions of the expedition. The weather was cold in November; snow was plentiful ‘and goods cheap; ‘and the only source of complaint to the writer was the inefficiency of Governor Douglass to protect the miners, while he wok care to see that all their dues were prompt- ly paid. An EvoreMent—Tue Pantins Berore THs Covnt.—Last Friday evening Chief Johnson received'a des pateh Fequesting him to cause the arrest of a young couple [ney Joseph W. Branch and Amelia Graat, who. ad eloped from Putnam, Conn., and who there wag reason to suppose were in this ity. ALM P.M. tho girls brother reached here from the East, and officer McBride was de- tailed to aid bim in searching for tho runaways, They ‘were found at the ber og os nd lotel, and the next morning taken before Justice %.
