Standing in the narrow Gothie railed-of Space reserved for the ——_ throne at the opposite extremity of the House—you may see on one of the benches to the right, almost every forenoon—Saturday and Sunday ex- cepted—during the session, a veryold man with s white ‘seed, and attired in a simple ~ frock and trousers of shepherd’s plaid. Itisa leonine head, aod the white locks are bushy ‘and profuse. So, too, the to the eyes somewhat weak now, that flash fire yet upon occasions. he face is ploughed with wrinkles, as well it may be, for the old man will never see fourscore years again; and of these, threescore, at the very least, have been spent in study and the hardest jabor, mental and physical. The nose is a mm: l—protuberart, rugose, ive, in- quiring, and defiant; unlovel t intellec- tual. There is a trumpet mouth, a belligerent mouth, posbecting and self-asserting ; largest ears, and on chin or cheeks no vestige of hair. Not a beautiful man this on any theory of beauty, Hogarthesque, Ruskinesque, Winckel- manesyue, or otherwise. Rather a shaggy, guarled, battered, weatherbeaten, ugly, faith- tul, Scotch collie type. Not a soft, imploring, yielding face. Rather a teasing, mocking, Pr ious cast of countenance. The mouth is fashioned to the saying of harsh, hard, per- tinent cape not cruel, but downright; but never to whisper compliments, or simper out —--. A_nose, too, that can snuff the ttle afar off, and with dilated nostrils, breathe for a glory that is sometimes terrible; but not a nose for a puncet-box or a Covent Garden boquet, or & flacon ot Frangipani. Would noteare much for truffles either, Tthink, or the delicate aroma of sparkling Moselle. Would prefer onions, or strongly infused mal and hops; something honest and unsophisti- cated. Watch this old man narrowly, young visitor to the Lords. Sean his furrowed visage. Mark his odd angular ways and gestures passing uncouth. Now he crouches, very dog like, on his crimson bench; clasps one ee leg in both his hands. Both- erem, Q C., is taiking nonsense, I think. Now the legs are crossed, and the hands thrown behind the head; now he digs his elbow into the little Gothic writing-table before him, and buries the hands into that puissant white bair of his. The quiddities of Floorem, Q. C., are beyond human patience. Then with a wrench, a wriggle, a shake, a half turn, anda half start up-still very dog like, but of the Newfoundlacd rather, now he asks a lawyer or a witness a question. Question very sharp and to the point, not often complimentary by times, and couched in that which ig neither broad Scotch nor Northumbrian burr, but a rebel- lious mixture of the two. Mark him well; eye him closely; you have not much time tolose. Alas! the giant is very old; though with frame yet unfeebled, with intellect yet gloriously unclouded. But the sands are ever ruoning. Watch him, mark him, score him on your mind tablets; then home; and in after years it may be your lot to tell your children that once at least you have seen with yourown eyes the famous Lord of Vaux; once listen to the voice that has shaken thrones and made tyrants tremble, that has been a herald of deliverance to millions pining in slavery and captivity; a voice that has given utterance, in man’s most eloquent words, to the noblest, wisest thoughts lent to this man of men by heaven; a voice that has been trumpet sounding these sixty years past in defence of trath, and rght, and justice—in advocacy of the claims of learning and justice, and of the liberties of the great English people, from whose ranks he rose; a voice that should be entitled to a hearin; a Walhalla of wise heroes, after Francis of rluam, and Isaac of Grantham; the voice of one who is worthily a lord, but who will be better remembered, and to ail time— remembered enthusiastically and affectionate- ly—as the champion of a! and wise and beautiful Haman Things—Harry Brougham.— London Weekly Paper. Sarrixa rae Strezts—A Noverty.—The denizens of Fulton street and vicinity were startled out of their ordinary apatby to street sights yesterday about noon by beholding a team of four white horses, and a large wagon filled with salt, advancing down Fulton street, with two men in the wagon all the time sboy- eling the salt out into the street as fast as they could. The wagon advanced slowly down to Fulton ferry, the men in it all the way plying their shovels with great activity till the entire street was salted. Much curiosity was mani- fested to know what all this seasoning was about; -ome thought the city officials, more or less of them, had devised a new expedient for squandering the people’s taxes; others thought that the spilling of so much sait savored of a demented condition in the parties engaged in it; while others more properly considered that it was merely the curing of the hard season which immediately preceded it. Such indeed, was the object. The proprietors of the omni- bus lines which run through Fulton street took this means as the most efficacious for melting the snow in the street, so their omnibuses could run to more advantage and safety. The proprietors of the Fifth avenue and the con- solidated omnibus lines, equally bore the ex- penses of the outlay. sbout fifty bushels of salt were scattered over Fulton street. Fifth avenue, Broadway and some other streets were also salted. About 100 bushels of salt were spilled in Fifth avenue. Arrangements have been made with the contractor for cleaning Broadway by the proprietors of the omnibus lines aforesaid, whereby the latter has engaged tosalt Broadway after every snow storm during the winter. The same thing will be dene in Fifth avenue, Fulton, and perhaps other streets, for salt isconsidered the cheapest, quickest and most effectual means of removing snow from the streets —N. Y. Upon hearing of this ruthless invasion ef his conjugal rights, the a husband got out a habeas corpus to obtain his wife. The hearing took } ag before Judge Bennett, at Burlington. The. return to the writ was that Sarah Jane was of weak mind, and not of suf- ficient capacity to contract marriage. The testimony introduced to prove these allega- tions turned out to be weaker than the intel- lect of Miss Phillips was alleged to be, the Court deciding that the little lady must be restored to her husband, if she so desired, which she did, and the twain left the court room as happy as all newly married pairs are = to be. The expenditures have been constantly augmented, until the ordinary receipts are behind the annual demands, and the annual expenditures now aver- age $161,000 over the annual average of ten years ago. The increase is attributable to the liberal policy for the promotion of education, agriculture, &c ; but there is still great vigilance and watch- fulness needed. A New Dovox —Two fast young men formed @ partnership in Boston for the purpose of doing a retail business, and opened two stores in differ- ent parts of the city—one partner ineach. (the other partner) who undersold goods to the infinite disgust of the en- tire trade.
