Monbay, Deo. 136 P. M. ‘The unsettled condition of the political world, and espe- cially tho Cespat bes coutained in this morning’s HxKaLD In reference to the action of the British in Central Ame- rica, and the possibility of collisions between our forces and those of her Britannic Majesty, led to much conversa tion and some anxiety ia business and banking circivs to. day. Several bankers appeared to 100k for higher ratox for money, and some ioans on very speculative stocks swore called in, A shipment of about $800,000 was mato today to the South Exchange op Kurope is firm ; the best bankers) exchange is held at 1035, ab which rate it is possible to ship bars, There ix rather more inquiry for money among the brokers, Wiough uot enough lo warrant a change of quotations. The bank statement which was made up to-day com pares as follows with that which appeared last week:— Week ent'g Discounts. Specie. Cireulat’n, Deposits. Cc. 338 324 407,726 7,887,517 bye 4 Deo. 1.2! The very rumor of hostilities ‘with Great Britain or France would cause a severe de- -eline in the securities on which the banks have been Nending money, and would in consequence precipi ‘tate upon the market large blocks of stocks snow hypothecated for loans, Such an event at the pre- ‘Sent time would render the recovery of our embarassed Gnancial institutions far more ditfleult than it would be if the banks would risk in thoir desire W earn dividends, As- eum'ng that the amount of specie shown by tho banks to be what they actually held oo Saturday morning, they mow have about $200,000 more; for the shipments per the Arago on Saturday and to the South to-day leave only bout this amountout of the Cali ornia arrival yesterday. The stock market to-day was depressed, aud lower prices ruled. The cause was, no doubt, in part, the un- favorable symptoms in the putitical horizon; but intrinsic values bad something to do with the decline. For some time past the two leading specula- tive stocks, New York Central and Reading, have becn maintained at the price at which they stand by the sales which are constantly beiog made by the boars for future delivery. The market has in fact been sustained by the bears. Whenever the bear influence—in the ape of purchases for deiivery—is removed, prices fal. ? Tus is simply what occurred W-day. State stocks declined from 34 to 4% per cent, Missouris closing in the alter noon at 88%. Ali the ratiroad bonds were lower from 4 tol per cent; but the Eriee, Hudsons, La Croase land grents and one or two ower descriptions were freely taken at the deciine. Among the speculative stocks, New York Central was the most active; it declined 1 per cent during the day. The decline in the Western stocks ‘was lees marked, with the exception of Hlinois Central, which foll off 2 per cent. Southern proferred was pretty steady, and was, it is said, in fair demand among persons couversant with the aifairs of the company Reading was, as usual, suifand unbonding; the business done was amall.
