Walneck's Theatre, MERCHANT OF VENICE OF ML WALLACK. The most interesting theatrical event of the season was 4he reproduction of “The Merchant of Venice,” under Mr. Wullack’s auspices, last « Tho play itself is, to a £0. audience, the most interesting of Shakspere’s comedies, The compactness and naturalness and efleet- iveness of the main plot; the originality and gayety of the amatory episodes, wherein Portia and Bossanio, Jes , Grativno and Nerissa have their wooings and their winnings; the clearly defined, well contrasted aud evenly balauced characters; and the glorious lan- @wge—now playful and witty, now tender and winning, now subtle aud sarcastic, now grand and cloguent—all conjoin to make a drawatic work ss entertaining upon the Mace as it is charming in the library. Mr. Wallack has evidently approached bis work of re- viving this noble work with due care and reverence, In the iret place be bas distributed the parts well; even the smallest of them have been placed in the hands oF capable artiste, Wola: Duke of Venice Prince of Morocco. Prince of Arragon. REVIVAL OF -RENTREB, sica and Lot .Mr. Chippendale, OMr, Wheatleigh. Me. Floyd. ‘This cast is much. Better usa whole ‘than that of the Princess’ theatre, in London, and the play as given here will compare very favorably with Mr. Kean’s grand coup, With regard to the general ensemble at Wallack’s, wo wore -quite prepared for something exquisite, and we were not disappointed. The Venetian characteristics and costumes, when the Queen of the Adriatic was at the beight of her glory and ber power, have been faithfully repro tuced, We have the Rialto as it was, the historic column of St. Mark, the grand canal, and the great ball, where the Duke ‘and the Senate dispensed justice according to their ideas of t - article. T on Portia’s nouse is a superb chateau, ca. pable of containing ali her suitors and their suites. The costumes aro in the best taste and.all fresh. Sach bravery of apparel bath never been equalled here in our day, The dresses of Portia and Bassanio were miracles in their way. The business of the scenes was most thoroughly and faithfully elaborated. The elopement of Jorsica, at the end of the second act, the mask, the gondolas and the Driliantly lightet houses, gave an ensemble which was refreshingly natural, and gave @_ sensation to the mort used up theatre goer. To Mr. Waliack belongs all praise for tbis, aud he may fairly claim his last wight's work as & brillant culmination of a long and honorable career. ‘The event was duly honored by the public, den before the ed ghly metrop incladet aimost every f uote in the literary, fahtona- dle and artistic world. Ii was inore like the first night of # Beason (han anything else, the honse play com: aa, and ‘The piay was Well acted, every personage baying the individuality intended the’ author. Mr. Watlack, who bas been suffering from a protracted illness, which bas withdrawn him {row uctive duty, cither ag a mansger or an actor, during two seasorfs, was in fret rate ». On his appearance he was greeted with lood and long niinued plaudits. He played Shylock with astonisting verve and fire. Indeed, he was, to our tiete, a little ov r vehement in the early scenes, ad bullied Autonio rather than railed at bim. Very little of the “aut wranco” which be speak of could be discovered. In t ‘ene with Tubal, Mr. ¥ Tack was very fine, and we do uot remetuber to hia geen the strong points in al scene 80 art made by any one ele, This scone was admirably done by all concerned b ok carried the audience With bim throughout. At the end of the third act he was recalied, and also when the curtain foil at the end of the play. Viere he said a few words of thanks for the flatter ing way in which his efforts had been receiv For the rest, Mrs. Hoey wus a little too sentontious in the cariy scenes of Portia, and it was the mor arked as Mr. Wailack bad restored the whole of the casket scenes aud gave the audience a representation of the un- lucky competitors for the capital prize in the Belmont Iu the trial scene Mrs. Hoey was diguiiled, as be- n, aud rea the Gne poetry wilh disore- .y oper emphasis, which is saying a great deal, as it is not at all easy bor common to do 80 now-a-days. Mias Gannon was a charming Norisea, and any one would be glad to run away with the Jessica of the night, jewelry or no. Mr. Beougham’s Gratiano lightened up the perform- ance whenever it (geod stow; and the others, as we havo already said, were perfect and at case in their several 7éles. The performance was Altogether smooth wd satis. factory; and the critic’s task is the more grateful when the beauties are so many and the blemishes so trivial aa in Mr. Wallack’s revival of the “Merchant of Venice.” ‘Tun Mocwt Vernon Fremvai.—The long array of names which figure in our advertising columns this morning as patrona of the forthcoming Fostival at tho Academy of Mugic indicates, in military parlance, such a turn out of the respectability and fxshen of New York as has rarely or never been witnessed. Assuredly, ‘tho cause justifies it; but apart from that, if we are to believe ai! the marvellous reports that reach us, Uais Festi val promises, in the way of entertainment, to be ono of the most attractive and brilliant that has over taken place in this city. @n the first day, December 18, @ morning and evening performance will be given at the Academy, which will anite all the most di-tinguiebed names of the theatrical and musical worlds. This is to be worn conspicuously in front of the driver's bat. Ten dollars is the fine for not wearing these badges.
