AFFAIRS IN KANSAS. Our Leavenworth Txavenwortu, K. T., Nov. 27, 1888. Approach of Winter—The Cold Blast on the Prairies—The Governorship and the Politicians Popular Opinion on the State Admission Question Poor Hopes for Forming « Democratic Party—Gold and the Effect of its Discovery Emigration and New Settlements—Milttary Move nts at Fort Leavenworth, de. ‘The bleak winds from the prairies and the occa ‘onal flurries of snow, remind us that winter is upon us, and ad- monish us that we should prepare for its inhospitable embrace. There is no part of oar country, probably, that has a more unpleasant and disagreeable winter climate vhan that portion lying along the borders of the great prairies. There is nothing to impede‘or retard the cold, biting winds which sweep across these prairies, and though the mercury may not denote eo great a degree of cold as one would suppose, still the effect upon men and animals is very severe, The character of the buildings is such that they do not afford much protection from cold; still the people do not snffer. They are hardy, indus- trious, and understand how to make the most of every- thing. ‘The recent reports that the governorship of Kangas has een tendered to Sam Medary have created no little ex- eitement in the Territory. The people were in hopes that some one residing in and identified with the interests of Kansas would have been appointed; and if the trath were known, there are several ambitious men here who stand ready to serve their country in that or any other capacity. No Governor need come here with the hope vhat his position will be a stepping stone to any higher of- tice, or any office at all within the gift of the people of Kan- eas, The day has gone by when any political capital can be made here. There are many uneasy spirits here who are anxious to burry Kansas into the Union, as their political prospects, ‘unlike good wine, will not improve by time; but the bone and sinew of the country are most decidedly opposed to aby such movement at present. They know that as 4 not yet prepared for such @ movement. She has ‘not yet received her marriage portion, and it would be the ‘beght of folly to consent to the ceremony without 2 house to shelter her, a bed to sleep in or a single pivce of fur- niture to commence hou ping with. She wants ber Uncle to do for her as he has done by her sister Ter ritoriee. This is the wish of the great body of the people of Kansas, and this wish wili be carried out if the political aspirants in their midst, and their “* dear friends at the Fast” wil! let them alone. Such a consymmation, how- ever, though devoutly hoped for, can hardly be expected. An effort is on foot to organize and vonsolilate a lemo- cratic party in Kansas, but it is truly an uphill work, There are so many shades of democracy, co macy big ns in the ranks, that it is next to an impossioil'ty to flarmonise. But a truce to political matters, The most absorbing topic in Kansas just at present is the gold discovery in the viemity of Pike’s Peak. It is now a fact that old exists in that region in quantities syfficient to justify people to go there and dig for it. Tis discovery: will effet a great change in Kausag, and particularly ic ‘that portion of it lying along the base of the Rocky Moun- tairs. Ithas openeta rich agricultural country, which will soon be iilled Tp with settlers, avd another stopping place formed on the road to the Pacific. The emigration next year to that portion of the country will be immense; for, being co convenient to the frontiers, pereons can go out in early spring, work during the summer, and retern home in the tall—and all at comparatively little or no ex pevse. Scttlements extend alrealy some distance beyond Fort Riley, some 140 miles from the Mise ~ and by ext fall there will be stopping places at every convenient point between here and the mines, Oor = neighbor, Fort Leavenworth, has under: gone quite a change in its garrison within a few days past. Six companies of the First cavalry have been ordered away, leaving only three companies of artillery to garrison the post. Two companies, under command! of Sackett, have gone to Fort Smith: two, under ¢ 1. J. Wood, to Fert Washita; and two, under Maj Sedgwick, to Fort Kil Theatrical and other Amusements. ‘Tue Cincrs Toure continues to be very well 9 sized It is fully worth the admission gee to see Magilton's moukeyismns. ‘Tom Ravais, at Nibio’s, will perform in the pantomimes of * Robert Macaire”” and ““Asphodel,”” and Yrea Mathias ig to go through her gracefal dances ta Acalista, AT THe Bowery ¥e are promised the new aul excitiug enomina: Rolfe, or the Right Han holes” Pantomime and the lively faree of “+ Lavery.” Benton's. —Mies Vandenb have a joint benetit to-night, Woman's Heart’ and the petite come Ground.” Wartack will make his fon in the + Berchant of Venice,” with regard duetion of which piece the reader is r ee ere.
