of Sale of Pews in the New Brick Church. ‘The announcement published in the daily papers that the pews in the pew Brick “Church would be sold at auc- ton last evening brought a large number of persons together at the appointed time and place. ‘Tae occasion was one of much interest to all present, but especially to ‘those who attended for the parpose of purchasing. The bidding was quite lively, and the premiums paid for tho privilege of selecting pews in any part of the church were ‘ogher than wswsl at sales of this character. The auction was conducted by Mr. Adrian H. Muller, but before the ‘pews were put up Mr, Holden made a few remarks in regaré to the manner in which the trustees had performed ‘the duties with which they had been charged. He spoke as follows :—The trustees, your servants, gentlemen, Thave desired me to say a few words which may be proper on the present occasion, It would have ‘been very gratifying to them to have been able to have answered all the questions and explained all the difficulties in the mind of any gentleman who was the owner of a pew in the ola Brick Church, if it were practicable, It is ‘very evident that it would be impossible to satisfy all the inquiries that have been made of the trustees, and the Taave not been able to devise a way to do so. They wis to Bay that they have for along time had the subject of selling the old church and the building of a new one under their charge, and it has been attended with no littl: difficuity. You never will know the time and anxiety and care that the Board of Trusteos have bestowed upoo ‘the subject of the disposal of the old church. [t has been no smal! matter to crect this new edifice. It may seom t) somo a Very easy wad pleasant affuir, but can assur: you it has cost a great deal of care and anxiety to accom- pliah it. We dont say wo are deserving of any credit for ‘this—we have only done our duty; but we hope we shall ve fairly judged. One of the chief difficulties w+ met was the disposal of the apd it was 4 serious one, Wo have looked at it carefully, and I may say prayerfuily, and we now lay the results befor > you. We mght have come to the congregation and asked ‘their opinion ou the subject; but it is evident to my mind there would be as many opinions as there were pew- holders. We went to ail the charches that bad experience in the matter, and derived from them all the information that we could’as to the manner in which they disposed of their pews, and the best moce of disposing of ours. We once Kuppoaed we might build a church which would be precisely the same as the old Brick Church, and give to Zach pewholder his proper location; but we found this im- practicable, There Were six pews taken entirely away, and there were six entirely changed; and then the loca- tion of the chureh is different, so that when we came to ound there were Gifficuities about it that could ed. What were we to do under those cir- cumstances? We bad $140,000 invested in this cburch, which we have divided into serip and given to the pew- owners ot the old charch, and we have divided it by a Scale graduated in such a way that there can be no difficul- ty about the division. We have taken the $140,000 aud divided it among the pews of this church; we have fixed the prices in the diagrams, and we trast we have fixed them juaiciousiy, properly and carefully. Now, in conclusion, said Mr. H, we propose to sell the. pews and to give the choice to avy man who will bid the highest. Mr. Muller, the auctioneer, now proceeded to open the sale, bet before doing so made a brief statement of the t The price, said he, of each pew is affixed to the umber thereof, as specified in the diagram prepared for purpose, and will be disposed of at auction by bidding s choice. The person bidding the highest price for a ce wili be entitled to locate bis pew (with the privilege of one other in addition thereto if desired), at the fixed price, togetoer With the premium on each’ pew for the , the same to be paid for at the time the bid is de- livered. Tho pew serip of the old church will be received ib payment at its par vathe, except the amount of premiums tor @ choice, which must be paid in cash. The pew rents will commence on the Ist of November instant, and the pews sold subject thereto; aud the first half year awill expire on the 1st of May next. The yearly rent will egin May 1, 1869, and is payable in adyance. Tue annual sto be assessed upon the pews will be fixed by the Board after the sale without delay. They will not exceed seven per cent upon the fixed value of each pow. “No. ou the ground floor, is exempted from the sale for the minister's pew. Now, I believe, continued Mr. Maller, ‘we understand what we are about. The corner stone of the in- Btitution was laid on the 2d of September, 1868, as is said, iv the presence of fifteen thousand persons. There are 209 acres of land counected with the college. ‘The meeting was called to order by Mr. Horace Greeley. ‘William ©. Bryant, Raq., was elected chairman.
