The Archbishop 6f Irkutek and the head adjutant ‘of the Governor of five: together with many offl- cere and priests, had Mkewise’ repaired to the town to give the Taiseion their ‘oficial support as far as the fron- fiers. Avother claseof guests consisted of troops of the Trans-Reikal army, encamped some miles from Troizko- sawekon the banke of the river Keerau. At this point ‘were drawn together two cavalry regiments of Cossacks, two other regimente of regular Cavalry, two batteries of ‘the Trane-Baikal fleld artillery, two Cossack batteries and a battalion of Siberian infaatry of the line—altogether more than 4,000 ‘men, and commanded by Major-General Michacloweki. ‘Before all persons constituting the mission had gather- fo Kiachta, the Russian mo tee residing at the lat- wr place took the opportunity of performing those Italian evolutions which are so much admired in the capitals of ‘their native empire. To give vent to his feelings the Mayor of Kiachta, at the end ‘of the military evolutions, requested the Russian autho- wities to accept asa nt for those wonderful fellows whose manauvres had given him and bis countrymen so much delight, a slight present of tea, of the value of 700 roubles (m the 4th and Sth of August, the fete day of her Ma- ‘mpress Maria Alexandrowna was celebrated by juring the whele of the night. It was the tirst time that the highest Chinese magistrate of this partof the froutier entered the church of Kiachta. Thi ted by his son kissed the hands Archbishop, and, like their father, were rewarded with a shake of the priestly palm. As if not satisfied with this—in Chinese high officials, a most extra- ordinary mark of condescensioa—the Mayor (Diargoo- ebef), ata late hour of the day, requested the pardon of the Russian commissioner ofthe frontiors, in case be, by his demonstration of respect and esteem, should have in any Way offended or acted contrary © Ws Rug. on custom: The three following days were again eecupied with field manouvres and grand parades of the forces. the Chinese were delighted beyond measure. The sight of a rolem! FIMANCIAL AN COMMERCIAL. , Nov. 16—6 P. M. ‘There was a natusal reaction in the stock market to- day from the heavyy decline of the past few days. Prices of the speculative ‘descriptions at the first board ruled about 4% a 4 per cent higher than they closed yesterday after- noon; State stocks and the better class of bonds were steady at yes‘cerday’s prices. The reaction, it need hard- ly be said, arose merely from the purchases of slrorts; nothing ha’ transpired to improve the prospects of the railroads fs lucrative enterprises. On the contrary, each succest sve event seems to render their case worse. Mr. Turner, the ex-President of the Galena, has, with more can- dor than good taste, exploded the hopes of a dividend on that, stock this winter; and the long-deferred publication of the September earnings of the Central is calculated to tuwaken doubts as to the certainty and amount of the usual February dividend of that corporation. This will be made clearer by afew figures. According to the monthly returns furnished to the prese by the New York Cen- tral, the earnings of the last fiscal year, ending Septem- ber 80, were $6,704,113 ‘The earnings of the year previous were. a Falling off this year. —which is equal to about 5% per cent on the stock. As, however, the company regularly paid the February and August dividends, this diminution must come out of the profits of the coming year. There can be no doubt of the fact that the Central paid out last year considerably more than it received, as the following table will show:— Grogs earnings of the last year. $6,704,113 Operating expenses, 60 per cent. 4,022)446 —(Last year these expenses were 653, per cont; is year, owing to tho low fares prevailing during the contest with the Erie, and to the diminution of businoss, they probably ex- ceeded 60 per cent. New York Central and Reading were the two most ac- tive stocks at the morning board, both being freely taken by the bears, to close contracts, and rallying under the demand, \{ a 3% per cent over yesterday’s price. The Western stocks were all active at a small improvement. The friends of Galena came ‘n and took the “stock at advance over yesterday's rates; Rock Island, the Michi. gan shares and the Western etocks generally were in de- mand at about @ like advance. Between the boards prices were still higher, and the afternoon board opened with rather a buoyant market.
