iw this part of the country. eet potatoes are grown in ‘abundance of goodsinn ond a Pt davor, corn reaches matu- rity ip ninety days from planting, ‘and potatoes grow to an enormous size and yield bountiully. As for winter wheat, the product is immense. It is whiter and heavier than ‘What grown in a lower latitude, and the product per acre is just about ae much as any ‘one pleases. All depends upon cultivation, Sixty bushels to the acre is not un- usual. We have attempted to conyey to the mind of those who have not seen the country referred to some idea of the territory tributary to the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad. It is impossible to seat a ae Per impression of the Rade and wager the country bordering on Upper Mississippi, ee the streams running into the Pather of Rivers; but suffice it to say, that it is an empire of itself, and capable of feeding the World. As its resourees are developed all the works ‘of internal improvements forming outlets must be taxed \ their utmost capacity, and prove vastly remunerative. At present the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad holds whe most important geographical position af any road west of the waters of Lake Michigan; and we do uot see that it can be superseded by the construction of any new Vine. ts productiveness must rapidly increase, and its capacity ina few years will hardly keep pace with the demands for the transportation of traye! and freight. It has a grand future ‘Delore it, and all that will be neces- sary to make the line highly remunerative to all parties interested is good ment and proper economy in the administration of its financial alfairs. ‘The invited guests of the La Crosse and Milwaukie Rail- wns Company have reason to congratulate themselves jpon the variety of the entertainment furnished. Inde- pes of an opportunity to view at leisure the magnili- cent country through which the road passes, they were gratified with the personal attentions of several old set- tiers, who carefully pointed out everything of interest. Capt. Cotting,a veteran of the lakes, and now agent of the company, appeared to know every ‘toot of ground from Milwaukie to the Falls of St. Anthony, and he imparted Valuable information as we progressed. Capt. J. Y, Hurd, of the steamer Northern Belle, made us intimately ac quainted with every point of interest on the Missiesipp river from Ia Crosse to St. Paul. To summer tourists he must be a model captain, Thereception of the excursion- ists at La Crosse was a brilliant affair. A torchlight pro- cession received the company at the landing, and escorted them to the public square, where they were addressed by the Mayor aud welcomed tothe city. The Milwaukie Light Guard, Company A, Capt. Starkweather, as fine a corps Of citizen soldiery as ever shouldered a musket, occupied ®@ prominent position among the excursionists. The music of their splendid band, the frequent reports of “ Young America’? enlivened the scene throughout, and added much the yencral enjoyment. Capt. Starkweather ig proud of his company, and well he may be. Throughout five days service, under our notice not a man deviated an iota from the strictest discipline, and every duty was cheerfully performed, A grand sup- per wound up the entertainments at La Crosse at about two o’clock on Friday morning, when all departed for St. Paul, The whole of Saturday was spent on the river, and a more delightful day never was known on the Up: per Mississippi. Noone was in a hurry, and the boat sped leisurely along, giving all an opportunity to acquire a rough geographical knowledge of the surrounding country. At St. Paul the entire population turned outto grect the strangers from the East. Goy. Sibley and sui received our military escort, and the corporation gave @ general invitation toa supper and ball for the evening. Parties were made up for visiting the most interesting places in the vicinity, and a mostagreeable day was pass- ed at Fort Snelling, St. Anthony, Minneapolis, the Fall Minnehaha, the cave and onthe prairies. It was a perfei gala day for St. Paul, which terminated with the corpo- ration entertainment, just as the wee hours of Sunday came peeping in upon the festive board, Those who were fortunate enough to have been present from the opening to the close of this jubilee, will never forget the solid en- joyment derived from the'attention paid by the civil au- thorities of La Crosse and St. Paul, and from the valua- ble informagiou imparted along the route by those who had early pioneers in that interesting section of the Union. Business continues dull in Valparaiso, and the rain, which is now falling rapidly, will make the roads to the anterior very bad, and of course, to some extent, cut off trade to the interior by means of carretas. The steamer which arrived bere on the th inst. brought two full mails from the United States and one from California, The failures in the mail are, by the agents of the English steamers, charged to neglect at Aspinwall or Panama; but the American residents here generally that both parties are to some extent answerable ‘The anxicty for a new American line is very great in Chile among all classes. Great preparations are making in this city and Santiago for the celebration of Independence Day. Unless inter- fered with by the rain, it will be an exceedingly brilliant affair at both places. The Chilean Congress adjourned on the 15th inst, but as Much basiness remains unfinished, it is generally believed that the President will immediately call an extra session. Hvis rumored here to-day that our Minister, has effected an adjustment of the Franklin claim, the United States Consul assured me this morning, bas been under discussion for more than twenty-five years. The Frankb, an American whaling reah was seized in the port of Taleahuana in the year 1832, charged with a violation of the laws of the republic. The Consul states that he has no doubt that the case has been settled, but is not informed as to the terms. Two murderers were executed at Santiago last week. In Chile al) criminale convicted of capital offences aro shot. The wife of the murdered man is to be shot at the tame place ina few ¢ having been convicted as a party to the murder for which the two men above re- ferred to were executed, There are at present but few American merchant ships in this port the Uniied e 26th of August.
