MERTING OP THE MEMBERS TO DEVISE MEANS FOR ERECTING A NEW CHURCH. Porsuant to notification, @ large assemblage of the members of the congregation under the pastoral care of the Rey. Henry Ward Beecher took place in Plymouth church, in Orasge street, Brooklyn, to receive the reports of the Committees ou Finance and Location appointed at an informal meeting. The object of the society is to erect a new cherch in a prominent locality in the city, in the most desirable and durable manner, and capable of ac- commodating ix thousand persons. ‘The meeting was called to order by Mr. Howard; and, on motion, Mr. Claflin was called to the chair. ‘The proceedings of the evening were opened with prayer by the pastor, who implored the Divine blessing and as- sistance on the new undertaking, reviewing the progress of the congregation from the time when they met ia a small chamber to contend, as it were, for very ex- istence, to their present advanced position. He prayed that God would lengthen the cord and strengthen their nds, The committees’ reports were then read. They stated that they had been unable to come tw any definite con. clusion in regard to a site, until the members should take some action in the matter, and state what sum of money they would be willing to raise. After deliberate conside- ration the committee had come to the conclusion that a be church like that contemplated could not be completed at a cost jess than $175,000. The reports also proposed the toliowing interrogatories -— 1. Whether subscriptions should be solicited as dona- tions? 2. Whether there ehould be an issue of scrip, the in terest to be taken out in pew rents? and 3, Whethsr there should be a sale of the pows cf the new church? The Rev. Mr. Bercner then offered gome remarks on the propriety of discussing the affairs of the chu presence of all the members. The very constitution of their communion required it. They were essentially a democratic chureb. The work they were about to undertake was not one that could be executed by mere words : the most gerious and united action would be required. There was no building in the world, with ene exception, that could be compared with that which they proposed to crect. The riding school in Moscow has & root that is larger, and their new church would be se- cond to it. He observed that there was a common opin- jon that the Academy of Music could contain 5,000 per- sons, but he did not think it could seat 3,000. This would give an idea of the work they were about to undertake. A general discussion then arose among the members, in the course of which it was elicited that there was $40,000 worth of serip now in existence, and that there was a mortgage of $16,000. A member of the congregation had offered $40,000 for the present church, which was the only offer made. After some discussion, it was resolved to raise eubserip. tions as donations, and the following gentlemen made do- nations, as under — Mr, Claflin. Mr. Beechor Mr. Beech. : The two latter to raise $5,000 cach besides. The other members preferred taking time to cousider, and the mecting was adjourned to Monday next. The same state of things is reflected in ‘our files by the Europa, which reached the city this morn- ing. New enterprises of various kinds were being brought forward, as well in London as in the Continental cities; there was a genera) inquiry for undeniable securities, among others for American State stocks; but fancy stocks were in less request. Heuce the trade from the newer States of the Wem has been quite restricted and collections tedious. The best and most reliable trade of the season came from the planting States, the middie, Atlantic and central or older States of the West. It i believed that those who may have been induced to Fpecniate in breadstuffs and prov visions early in the feason will be liable to meet with losses. In domestic cotton goods transactions were moderate, The character of the late advices from China were contradictory, and in the main neither very definite or satisfactory. Trade was represented to be dall, both at Canton, Hong Kong and Shanghas, though our accounts stated that at the latter place trade was improving. = Present cireumetances the export trade is dull, and cotton piece goods could not be forced off without Concession in prices. Stocks of most kinds have ac- cumulated. Raw cotton, withina month or six weeks, has declined over one cent per pound, which, of iteelf, it permanently established, will have the efloct Jo depress the market to aome extort. At Manchester, at last ad. Vices, trade was less active, while prieve were Pom Brown domestic shirtings and sheetings were dull at® except for favorite productions. Fine yard inch bleache ehirtings, of favorite makes, were at I1\e. Cheaper grades were firm, and in light supply. Grades of seven-eighths and three-quarters were quite steady Drills, in the absence of demand for China, were quiet. Chinne drills were held at 8c. Osnaburge were in good supply and dull. Primt cloths, of desirable fineness, were more firmly held. Printed goods generally were com- atively quiet, Cassimeres, cloths, jeans, flannels and jankets were inactive, and ‘sales limitel’ ‘The market for nearly all foreign goods, as usual at Ubie season of the was quiet, but fushionabie, fancy and desirable year, staple goodg, botu British and Continental, were firmly held: The stocks to be carried over will be a good deal less than they were this time fast year, and the trade wl open with fewer old goods to clear out to mane roam for new and fresh importations.
