Captain Weed, of the Second precinct, arreated Simon Galinger yesterday afternoon, on a warrant issued by Jus tice Welsh, wherein Mr. Galiuger stands charged with wil- fully and feloniously setting fire to and burning certain articles of merchandise, with an intent to defraud the lenox Fire Insurance Company. It seems, by the aflida- vit now before the Justice, that on the evening of the 15th of October inst., shortly before six o'clock, Mr. Galinger left bis store, No. 40 John street, in company with hia errand boy; the key was in the door, ready for locking up, when Mr. Galinger said to the boy ‘hold on’? or “wait a minnte,” and then returned into the store; the boy im- mediately loft, and did not see Mr. Galinger again on that night; as the ‘voy passed the corner of Fulton and Pearl streets the clock in the jewelry store under the United States Hotel indicated five minutes to six o'clock. Other witnesses testify to the discovery of the fire at about six o'clock, and that it was found burning in a box containing waste ‘paper under one of the counters; the fire bad burned and charred the inside of the box, the under part of the counter, and burned and destroyed, in part, ee boxes of ribbons which stood upon the counter at 6 time. Fire Marshal See oe was at tho premises shortly after the fire was ext! nd sent & messenger to Mr, Galinger to inform im aye the fire, and desire him to come to the store immediately, The messenger and Mr. Galinger returned to the store, when the Marshal asked Mr. Gallngor to stato what he did. prior to leaving the pre- Freche evening. It further appears that the Fire Marshal found the bot tle of wine on the counter, rolled up in a newspaper. It was on the counter betweeb the street door and the coun- ter where the fire occurred. The ¢ and loss was pimporereg appraisod by @ committee of the Insurance Companyies and Mr. Mr. Galinger & Son. It amounted to $400, and that sum Mr. Galinger totake. Jones, and put the bill away in his pocketbook. Some three or four days after- wards, on going to an exchange office in the lower part of the city, McLaughlin found, to his utter surprise, that the bill given to him by Jones was worthless, and on mecting the latter the next day he informed him of the fact. Jones promised to redeem the bill, but failing to perform the contract Mclaughiin had him arrested. When taken into custody the prisoner tried to secrete a number of counterfeit “iives” on the Granite Bank, of Boston, which he had in his possession, but in this he was unsuc: cessful. The magistrate committed the prisoner for exam- ination. The counterfeit ou the Rockland Bank is an alteration from the plate of a worthless institution called the Wanbeak Bank, of De Soto, Nebraska.
