NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1858. ‘The Case. GORONER'S INQUEST CONTINVED—PROGRYSS OF THE OHRMICAL ANALYSIS—PARTIAL REPORT OF DRS, BOKEMUS AND WOOD, Pursuant to adjournment, the Coroner’s jury in the Ste. phens case met yesterday morning at Betleyuc Hospital, fer the purpose of hearing the report of the medical gen- ‘Wemen now engaged in making a chemical analysis of the Dody of deceased. At half past eleven o'clock Coroner Connery entered the voom, and announced his desire that the jury would tke a@recess until four o'clock P. M., when he would have some important matter to communicate, But aiter con- salting with Drs. Doremus and Wood for a few moments, ‘the Coroner recalled the jury, and addressed them as fol- bows — Gextumrey or mur Jory—Drs. Doremns and Wood sa; ind ‘thoy are ready to make a partial report now. They thit p+ dd pled to give thom a little more time, in ferder that a thorengh examination of the body may be made. ‘The modica! gentlemen are present and can for themselves. Dr. Doremus, geatiemen, (intro- the gentieman). Dr. Doremus—We deem it necessary to examine the en- tire body, and in doing 80 We require more time than has Deen allotied to us for the completion of the task. I would @ay that have been engaged at the work 4 Vv (Sundays not excepted) ever since it was committed w our charge. We cannot state the exact hour or day when we shall have the analysis complet 1 would, therefore, suggest the propriety of your us to —_ the Coroner when we shall be ready to make a full port of the examination. We would not like to have ae Jury called together if we wore not ready to report. Coroner Connery—It would be well to explain to the ary that you are examining, not only the stomach, heart, juage, liver and abdominal viscera, but the entire body ; and that in order to set ata thoresgh knowledge of the facts, it will be advisable to give you al! the time you re- quire for that purpose. For my part, I don’t want to hurry the doctors. I dink it would be better have a fall and thorough investigation, no matter how long a time it would require. How loug would you require, Dr, Dore- mans? Dr. Doremus—The examination might be concluded in a ‘week, ten days or two weeks. ‘A Juror—Wonid it not be proper to have some day set apart for the purpose of hearing the report of the che- mists ? Coroner Connery—Could you be ready Doremus? Dr. boremus—Yee, we might ; but would it not be bet- ter to give us further time? Ex-Attorney Genoral Cushing—I appear here as counsel for the prisoner, and now deem it proper to urge upon the medical gentiemen the necessity of completing te analysis as quick as is compatible with the interest of the public. Mr. Stephens has now been in prison for two or @iree weeks. He hus offered bail for his appearance, even as high as $100,000, but it has been refused, and the ques- fion of bail has been postponed until the report of the gentiemen making the chemical analysis should be made obi hope, therefore, that the chemists will love no in the premises, as it is a great hardship for my @lient to be incarcerated under such circumstances. Dr. Wood—The case has assumed such a fo. midahle as pect that we are anxious the jury should give us sufficient ime not only to do justice to the public but to the pri- poner also. I do not believe, from what I have sven, that ‘two weeks will be any too long for a thorough examina tion. Enough has been discovered to render it necessary that the whole body should be analyzed. In order to av- @omplish this task a further adjournment of at least two weeks will be necessary. Mr. Cushing—I only desire that the examination may be eompieted as speedily as the interests of the public may require Dr. Doremus—I assure you we are at work until one and two o'clock every morning. Coroner Connery—I have visited Dr. Doremus frequent- Yy during the progress of the examination, and always found bim and hie associates hard at work. A man's life depends upon the testimony of these gentlemen, and I do not see why they should be hurried at ail. Mr. Cushing did not understand why the prisoner's life should hang upon the testimony of the medical gentlemen. If wrong bad been committed by somebody else, be did net prisoner. It had been in a week, Dr. see bow it could affect the whiepered argund the room that the doctors had found some arsenic in the body of Mrs. Stephens, and that by examining forther they ex pected to find more. He hoped that such rumors would ot be permitted to go abroad with any official recognition, unlese the facts were reaiiv 80. ‘the doctors, in their par- tial report, have not stated that they found any arsenic, and will not give any information on that point outeide of bag id Rows Yooi—We have not told any one that we have found arsenic, not even the Coroner. We mean to say wothing until the proper time arrives A Juryman—Mr. Coroner, 1 thought the body was to have been buried the day after we had our last meeting. Coroner Connery—So it was. The bones were all in- ferred, but the flesh was retained by the doctors making the chemical analysis. After some further discussion the inquest was adjourned wntil Monday, the 25th inst News from Havana. THE ARRIVAL OF THE BLACK WARKIOR—GREAT EX- PLOSION AND LOSS OF LIFE. [From the N. 0. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘TrEspay, Oct. 12—6 I. M. The stock market, which is the principal attraction in ‘Wall street and the vicinity at present, gave evidence to- day of a “fullness” which often precedes a reaction. For the past ten days the rise has been continuous, and nearly every stock on the list has participated in the unprovi« ment—some more, come less. The sellers for a decline have done their share toward aiding the adva closing their contracts. As is usually the case on an ad vancing market, several outside parties have again yeu. tured upon the uncertain and perilous game, and have bought stocks for the most part at the highest prices. In the meantime no favorable change has been effected in railway matters—either in their finances or in their busi nese. No expedient is neglected to inflate the market Price of stocks, but the far more important and vita! mat ters of economical management and prudent administra tion of general bnsineas are wholly disregarded. So long as railroad financiers devote their gies to the claboration of schemes of stock dividends and other similar tricks for the delusion of the public, we shall have no faith in any permanent rise in any of the stocks now classed in Wall street as “‘speculativ The pay ment of their large floating debts must be made. The mil lions of bonds falling due in 1859 and 1860 must be pro- vided for. To expect that, in spite of the heavy drains these exigencies will cause upon the finances of our rail roads, ana in spite of the neglect that is shown to sound financial and commercial principles in their management, a permanent advance can be realized in their stocks is in- consistent with common sense and with the experience of the past five years. ‘The leading speculative stock is now New York Central. It is useless to deny that its character as a dividend pay ing property is gone. The late convention entered into between it and its rivals is a public prociawation of its dependence on them for ite success. Henceforth, 8 business and its dividends must be regulated by the harmony that can be preserved by manifest violations of every sound business principle. We have al ready adverted to the Reading, a corporation which, in a single year, has increased its capital from $18,500,000 to $25,000,000. It matters not how the increase has been ef- fected: the property is the same, its capacity and future in come will be no greater. No thoughtful man, after a careful examination of the facts, can continue to class Reading as a dividend paying property. It may continue for some time to serve the bulls and bears asa ehiuttic cock; but the public, the investors, should have no more to do with it. Similar remarks apply to very many of the ‘Western roads. All or nearly all the great railroads of the country are, in fact, in a very precarious position. Some will, wo doubt, struggle Uhrough the year or more which must elapse before avd by allowing their roadway to suffer for want of repairs, may present a respectable “show” of net earnings; others can bardls help going into liquidation. Fer the present, to expect » ener winess revives | permanent improvement in the morket price of any is équally at war with present facts and past experience. ‘The business at the Stock Exchange this morning was very large. Rending seemed to be again the lealing stock. It opened at yesterday's highest price, and touched 5244; but an apparent effort of some of the bulls to “rea lize” caused a decline, and the stock closed weak at %\ lower. The ball party have naturally moved in the bonds also. Five of the 1886 bonds were taken at 72, and the fame price was bid for more; the bidder will soon have an opportunity of filling his order, not a little to the satis faction of some of the old creditors of the concern. New York Central was not so buoyant as yesterday. Tt opened at §4, and, after reported sales of about 1,900 sharce closed % lower. Eric was rather dull at an advance of Xi. Hodson River was 4, per cent better, Harlem, 1 per cent. [linois Central steady. The Michigan shares were rather active. Michigan Central sold freely at yesterday's closing price, and rose \ per cent, Southern, common. was steady; the preferred was active at yester day's best price, though eharply assuiled by thr bears at the close of the call. With these excep tions, the leading specniatives among the Western shares ¢id not sympathise with the course of the market Galena was ; lower, with large sales, Toledo was main. tained; Rock Island was % lower, several bears taking the opportunity to close their ehort contracts at the de cline.
