HARMLESS GOSSIPING. Such is the soft name given to 2 kind of moral barbacue, in which the victim is served up whole, for the entertainment of a class of per- sons whose sole object and employment seems to be, cutting carving human character and human happiness. “ Miss Listener, did you hear the story that is bes cag a about Mr. L "s character?” “* No, Mrs. Smoothtongue, [ didn’t; pray what is it?” " = ~ Well, see here; if you'll promise never to ee ae —— ae, ru rg you; ugh it’s qu wrong, I suppose, for me to say anything boat it.” Miss Listener importunes ber to narrate what wane Mr. 1 character, an wil to promise ; Says there can Do harm in talling hers aes, pore ae ey anair a bespeaks candor of persons, ins to aj robe to the already half-healed paler 75 Fo L A reputation; and being a 2 that is nétu- rally nervous, is very likely, in attempting to open the recently-made wound for Miss L ’s gratification, to cause it toinflame, still making the unhappy victim's pains more intolerable herever a reputation is to be sacrificed, these birds of prey are sure to gather, to feast and fatten on the yet palpitatmg carcase, and the savage appetite continually grows by what it. feeds upon. And yet, detrimental to the peace and welfare of society as such cannibals nay be, their ravages are so cunningly con- ducted that they seldom become amenable to the letter of the law, whose spirit they are con- tinually transgressing Many an innocent sufferer, worn out in body and mind by the consciousness of being the ob- Ject of eslumnies and suspicions which 8 has it not in his power to meet openly, has, broken- , gone down to the grave, grateful for the summons of death to release him from the injustice of his fellow-beings, hoping to find a age in the bosom of a merciful . _ It is not to be supposed that all who indulge in gossiping or in the retailing of private scan- » fally understand what they are joing, or really intend to destroy the happiness of an- other. Thoughtlessly they listen to the iusid- ious insinuations, and to pass away an idle moment, or to awaken the light laugh, give it additional circulation, little thinking that they are scattering firebrands, arrows and death in every direction. The fire thus kindled, moves on with fearful rapidity, until it sweeps away everything of good report in whole families or meighbootncdss and leaves a black and desolate waste, where nothing green or beautiful can ever spring up again. Bat, while making an exception in favor of a class who are sinning thoughtlessly, and may be brought to see their error, we are compelled toadd that there are those in almost every community to whom detraction seems the very breath of life, and whom nothing ever avails to turn from their purpose. These individuals are the more dangerous, because they usually stab in the dark, and betray with a kiss of friendship. They carefully avoid an open at- tack, which might be met before a human tri- bunal, bat peison with their breath the fairest reputation, before their unconscious victim has one suspicion of treachery or danger. Mrs. Smoothtongue is a person who is well- skil'ed in the art of tender assassination. She can superintend the whole battery of whis- ii uations and dark allusions, so art- fully given that none but the initiated could imagine her communications slanderous, even while tley felt their-effects in the total loss of confidence in those they had once trusted. Mrs. Smoothtongue never says of an enemy honestly “I bate him.”’ She is far too wise to make a coufession like this. her auditors would be likely to doubt the veracity of her remarks. “Mrs. is a very good woman ; [ love her much; bat I am sorry that sueh and such things are true of her.’ And then, in sweet words, she goes on to insinuatejgrievous defects in her character, and is never more fully her- sei{than when aiming a blow at the bosom bared before ber in the unreserve of faithful affection Who could distrust that bland smile, those soft tones, and these eyes which seemed to love all they bebeld, connected as they were with pretensions of unrivaled piety? None but those who had seen, on some rare oceasions, the mask laid aside, und beheld with staggered awazement a hideous and inhuman sbape, with — which were fastened alike in friend and Let it not be said that we have been drawing @ caricature in this half-defined picture. If any there are who have never yet met a Mr. or Mrs. Smoothtongue, they have great cause for deep gratitude, for they have an enviable heritage. The spirit of slander, detraction, hideous aspect, or reach the hill-top of malig- nity at a single step. There are many degrees from the thoughtless gossip, whose great love of talking leads her to reiterate all the scan- dals of the day, down to the wilful slanderer whose very breath poisons the atmosphere around her. But the indulgence of the first leads almost always to the latter; and they who begin by repeating an injurious report, qualified, perhaps, by their own disbelief in its truth, may end by deliberately destroying the reputation of another who is in any way ob- noxious to them. That low spec'e: of buffoonery called quiz- zing, satire, ridicule, sarcasm and mimicry, all belong to the same family, and are all viols- tuons of the precept—- shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.’’ We have, on various oceasions, seen people complimenting others on qualities they did not possess, with the bope of imposing oa their credulity; and then, in the absence of their dupes, ridiculing them for the weaknes which led them to receive the flat- tery. Such conduct is treacherous and cruel im the extreme. and should be denounced by ail as a habit of the most degrading and dan- gerous tendency. However harm it ma: appear, itis the germ of evil, and if allowed to grow. will, in time, root out every thing that is amiable aad sincere in the character. Tue Arcaytic TeLeceara Caste.—The Directors of the Atlantic Telegraph Company, have issued a card to the public in which they say: At is the desire of the Directors to communi- cate their views, so far as the present position ot things enables them to judge, as to state of the pany's property. That a serious fault exists in the enable at some point between 200 and 300 miles from Valentia, cannot bedeubied: but as Mr. White- house had established n0 means of eunzerted action between the Valeutia and Newtuund- land stations in case of difficulty, it is pot altogetber possible to say whether the entire ew! t arisesfrom the fault referred te. They have, therefore, sent off, with fail in- structions, one of the stat, aud they are en- couraged to hope that some communication may possibly yet be established through the cable for a time, ev 2 i 8 paesent state, and that so soon as the weather and other circumstances are sueb as toencourage the making an attempt = arma (amen of succese to raise i injered part, it is net beyond probabilit that the existing cable sight be reudered pew maneatly peers | It was boped that by this time the underta- king would have been in process of earning a £ . by aes its rank and position might This legitimate result has been adverse circumstances; but the Directors, in the yelto A Fast ek Man Marrying a Pretty Mil- lider and Kunnisg Away from her in a few months. Some months since a oy ep man. a clerk in a dry house on Fifth street, between Main and Walnut, became acquainted with a fair and youthful milliner, not devoid of eo- quetishness—a pretty and interesting girl, in 4 word, for whom most of the opposite sex would have found no difficulty in forming an a sear The dry goods clerk—we will call im “* Harry’’~was no exception, and his flirtations ended in a -serious and prophetic pointing to marriage. Still, he postponed that solemn step to determine if that improasive ceremony could not be avoided; but, at last, concluding that, wedlock alone was the golden key that would unlock the nay of the garden Sian, he made “ Minnie” the wife of his om. For a few weeks—for two or three months perhaps—Hiarry was devoted to his consort. and held himself aloof.from the dissipations and excitements in which, during his bachelor- hood, he had mingled. Soon, however, the novelty of his situation wore away, and his longing for the old idols returned. Minnie was as fair as when the blush of maidenhood mantled her checks, and, moreover, she was | gp. and affectionate, an excellant wife in t, and one Harry should have appreciated, as she deserved: but alas! for constancy, he did not at ali. At the termination of six months the union was found to be eyey me poees at least on the | ae of one member of the connubial firm, and m that period Harry relapsed into his old habits, and was oat every night until the dawn, indulging in suppers, while bis patient wife, pale from watching, sat at home wonder- ing, for the thousandth, time, as the city clocks tolled out the hours heralding the ap- proaching morn, why he did not come! The head of the house began to he cramped for means, as he expended more in his pleasures that would have sufficed for thrice the comfort they enjoyed. His credit he had nearly ex- hausted, and weary of his wife and of bis straightened circumstances, he determined to do something that would produce a change. One morning he entered his wife’s apart- ments, his face radiant with joy, and informed her he had just received intelligence that he had fallen heir to a large estate by the decease of a Southern relative. Minnie was delighted with the ; believing that half her husband’s entrangemant was owing to his want of wealth. She had, we should have stated, saved by in- dustry before her marriage, some five hundred dollars and Harry at once asked her to loan him a portion ofthissum. He often endeavored to obtain possession of it before in vain, as she was desirous of keepingit, as the phrase is, for a rainy day—a request, which, under the cir- cumstances, she could not refuse, as he needed the money for his travelling expenses. She fre him the desired amount, and the next day @ was off for the South to claim his in- heritance. The poor wife is malaey of course, but fortunately has a little of the commodity with which her sex are usually so ill provided— erere She bad learned before marriage to independent, and she will be so again. While she trudges ‘to her morning labors at home after the accomplishment in the evening, as shé did ere marriage came, she feels melancholy to think how her hope and love were blighted, but is consoled to think the flower once blasted no frost can harm again.—Cincennati kn quirer.
