By John wt historian of the enterprise. New York: D. Ap) ton and Company. We congratulate the public on the appearance of the ‘only authentic history of the greatest achievement ever performed by human geniur—the successful accomplish- ment of the Atlantic telegraph. This work is from the pen ef Mr. John Mullaly, and embraces the information which was published in the columns of the Heratp, of which he ‘was the special correspondent during all the expeditions frem that to Newfoundland, in 1855, to the final Atisatic expedition which terminated in the tanding of the cable at Velentia and Trinity Bays on the bth of August lest. All that bas been alrea¢y published was care. fully revised and corrected, and a large amount of original matter ie added, making the work a complete and autbea be parrative of the andertsking, from ite inception to its eompletion, As @ proof of its authenticity, the publishers preeent the certificates of Mr Syrue W. Field, Mr. W E Bverett, and Captain WL. Gadseon, by whom the author was regarded as the ‘‘Aistorian of the Eaterprise.”” Tao book is of a large octavo form, contains 329 pager, and is sbundantly illustrated with eugravings of the machinery, the ships employed in the work, the coiling of the cable, land the scenes on sea and ashore curiog {is progress. The suthor does rot confine himesif, however, tothe mere soventific details, but gives allthe isteresting, social aad other incidents connected with the cruises of the Niagara, tive on board @ man of-war, a visit to Queen Victoria, and slarge fund of anecdotes. While onthe three Atisntic telegraph expeditions Mr. Mulialy was, as he informs the public in his preface, the guest of the wardroom officers during the eleven months he apen} on board the ship. ‘The book opens with an historical account of the origin, ‘ergapization and pregress of the New York, Newfound Jand avd London, and the Atlantic Telegraph companies, the first of whieh is ax auxiliary to the latter. It nex: ia- fwoduces us & the principal men of the enterprise, ant presente us with the portraits of Mr. Field, Mr. Everett and Captain Hudson. We are, therefore, at the commonse- ‘ment, made acquainted with the lesding persons who ap pear in the successive stages of the undertax'ng, and who payed importent parts in bringing it to a successful istuc ‘The trip of the James Adger to New‘oundiand, in the sua. mer of 1855, to lay tho oabie across the Guif of Si, Law renee, is fully described: and this being the preliminary step towards the estabiiehment of the grost ocean line, Drings us to the first Atlantic telegraph expedition of 1867. ‘The Niagara started on this expeaition on the 24th of April of that year; andes she was one of the veessis that laid fh cable, and porsesred, in the language of fhe author, ‘an individuality of ber own,” he gives an interesting and instructive sccount of “the little world which moved within her.” He tel'e us how the sailors and the officers lived, takes us fmto the different parts of me ship, and lets usintos Kpowledge of a/l those various details that make up what ts called itfe on board a men-of.war, After the arrival of the Niagara in England he relates all the interesting inci- dente of ber stay in that country, and describes her trips to the various ports which she vieited; lew us know what . the people said in regard to her, and informa us ali adout the dietinguished people that went on board from time to time, and among whom were Prince Jerome Napoleon, the exiled members of Louis Philippe’s fami'y, Lady Fravklip, and other distinguished persons. The Queen ‘Was pot among these, but tbe author saw her at Backiog bam Palace; and he telie the reader how she looked, how Prince A’bert looked, and, in fact, how they all looked, and gives a description of the whole scene as it appeared ‘bo bimeelf. ‘The greater part of the work is, of course, taken up ‘with the narrative of the enterprise, the ssieati(i> portion Of which is so popularined as to render {t ictelligibie to the unscientific reader. The telegraph plateau and the tmfusoria are describe, as ie ago the manufacture of the table, the epi civg and the payiog out process, and the scenes on board ship, night and dey, whtie they were en- geged in laying and Iancing the cable. Among the illus trations, of which there are thirty-nine, are scenes ina adie circus, the Agamemnon in a storm, highly magni- fied remaine of animal life from the platead, Valentis Bay, ‘the eastern terminus of the Atlantic telegraph, the com pany’s station house at Trinity Bay, diagrams ot the dif ferent paris of the two cable ships, and other engraviegs mecesrary to a clear onierstanding of the work. Muste Hall and Opera House tn Brooklyn. Seme months since we stated that a movement bal pesu ‘set on foot for the erection of a large Music Hall in Sro0k lyn, which might be adapted, when ocossion requires, 4° the representation of opera. The substitution wf tho old theatres and concert rooms in the lower part of Beat way by vew establishments hghor up tows, bar reo iere! this step @ necessary ‘one om the part of the Brook yo people, Itis found almost impracticable at preveas for those who o not possess equipages of \ueir own to a2 joy the amusements of the opers and the theatre, The toil of travelling up to Fourteenth street after the dey’s abore, and of returning at one or two ip the moraing ny uncertain and overcrowded ooaveyauces is go great tha. ‘but few of the Brooklyn residents now think of uader taking it. Under these circumstances, the oaly alterns- tive left them ie to provide places of amusement nearer home. With @ population of oyer two hun- drod thourand it. seems te us that Brookiyo ought to be able to sustain not oniy one, but half a dozen, establishments of this charecter. [nat one properiy constructed Music Hall, affording facilities for ope- ratic representations, would presper in a commas ty notorious for its patrouage of vocaliem aud voces, will not admit of question. Tho thing, however, mass po done on guch a scale as to fulfil ail the requirements of firs} rate artisia and fashionabie audiences. Thea, aad then only, will the best order of taleut be attracted to Brooklyn, and the favor of ali classes of the reeidonis so cured. Buch is the project now ia process of rea'ization by @ number of pubhe spirited individuals iaterested in the progress of our sisler city. Afew weeks agoa large sad nftuential meeting of citizens was conveved to consider their plans, and the encouragement which they fben me? with was such as to justify the expectation that ine fai season Will not be aliowed to pass by without steps being taken to purchase the ground and to raise the walls of the Proposed edifice. A committee was appoiuted to report upon the best site and to cousider the easiest meaun of raising the capital required; and ss 002 as the leating property holders who are largely interested {a this mat ter return from the country another meetiog wili be called to carry out the recommendations of the report We look upon this enterprise as condusiug mrgeiy to the sustentation of our own musicel and tnoairical establishments in New York. Tae competition caagot burtthem for the simple reason that our theatres are now too far removed from the reach of the Brookiyn peo ple to seoure any large amount of their patronage, With the facilities afforded by the propiaqally of establieh ments euch as that which is projected io Brook)ya, musi- cal directors and managers will for the future fod i) easier to make remuserative arrangements with their artista. Instead of having two operatic companies 4i- viding the profits of the New York performancer,as i+ now but too often the case, we sball have them altornal ing their attractions, and thus dofug a good business both for themselvee and their managers. Even one well ap. pointed troupe might perform in the two cities ou alter nate nights, instead of lying by every second evening from the fear of exhausting the favor of the pub ic, aad uselesely swelling the expenses of the direction. Tac new enterprise will, of course, encounter flerce oppoeitioa from the bigots and fpnatios who fought 80 bard to pro vent the Brooklyn railroad cars from running on Suodays Nothing can econduce more to its success than such an agitation. The Brooklyn people have been 89 loag crossed, thwarted and Vexed by these l’baristical des pot, that auy fresh opposition of this sort will only serve to arouse a general feeling of indignation amongst them, ‘and induce them to contribute more liberally to this aod all fature projects of amusement. For the sake 0% art, therefore, we hope that the Brooklyn parsons will getup a crusade against the new Moric Hall.
