Benjamin Smith, pastor of the Congregational Church at Litchfleld, Me., died on the Ist inst., aged 43 years. He wasa native of the town. a grandson of one of its first settlers, and a son of one of the deacons of the church. M The Fulton, which sailed for Europe this day, took out $585,168 in specie, which is considerably more than the Saturday steamers usually take. Some of the shipments which were to have gone in the Cunarder were doubtless transferred tothe Fulton. Exchange closed pretty firm, a good business having been done at 1093 4110 for bankers’ sterling, and at 613.0 5114 for billson Paris. Mouey iv easy again; the last effort by the bankers to put up the rate has again fuiled; atfour per cent it is freely offered to the brokers, and there wre many loans still out at three. The stock exchange experienced, this morning, the natural reaction from the decline of the past few days, ‘The friends of several of the prominent speculative stocks rallied to their support, and the bears theinselves, wh have no confidence in any great decline in market values, were only too glad to cover their contracts yesterday with two per centin their favor. This morving they came in os buyers co freely that the market rose and almost as. sumed « buoyant tone. Reading, whieh led the decline yesterday, led the upward movement to-day. It opened ata shade above the closing price of yesterday, and rose ‘on the second cal! this morning 34 per cent, closing at a further advance of %. Tho resistance offered by the bears was slight, and it is understood that the bulls had the assistance of some Philadelphia orders. In New York Central, many of the bears hastened to buy for delivery on the opening this morning. When over 1,000 shares had been (aken up in this way, the holders demanded und the bears paid an additions) eighth for the stock; but the sales fell off, and « tendency was shown to put out fresh short contracts. Erie was dull at yesterday's figures. The presidents of the various railways couvened in the late Philadelphia Convention met in the course of the day and bad a further conferenee on their mutual interests. Galena rose % per cent; Rock Island %, closing at an ad vadee of 4; per cent over yesterday's closing price; Toledo rose %; Ilinois Central 44; Michigan Southern 4; Michi- gan Central 3s per cent; all moving together and sympa thising with the general course of the market.
